Suicide Risk Among Patients With Cancer by Sex in Japan: A Population-based Study.

BackgroundIn Japan, few studies have examined suicide risk for 5-year relative survival rates for cancer sites. Since 5-year relative survival rates differ by sex, we aim to examine suicide risk for patients with cancer separately for men and women.MethodsWe estimated the risk of suicide among patients with cancer by sex in Japan compared to the general population, using standardized mortality ratios (SMRs). Patients with cancer diagnosed between January 1, 1985-December 31, 2013 and registered in the Osaka Cancer Registry were followed for up to 10 years. The outcome was suicide death. In add

Prevalence and clinicopathological characteristics of de novo metastatic cancer at a major radiotherapy centre in West Africa: a cross-sectional study.

BackgroundCancer is a major public health challenge in West Africa, with a significant proportion of cancer-related deaths attributed to distant metastasis. De novo metastatic cancer (DnMC), where metastasis is detected at diagnosis, presents considerable therapeutic challenges, particularly in limited-resource settings where novel treatments are often unavailable and/or unaffordable.AimTo determine the prevalence, incidence and clinicopathological characteristics of patients diagnosed with DnMC at a major radiotherapy center in West Africa.MethodsThis was a single-institution-based quantitati

Prognostic disclosure in cancer care: a systematic literature review.

BackgroundCollusion in cancer care is the diplomatic concealment of information between a triad of the health care professional (HCP), patient, and caregiver. Free and expressive communication is determined by multiple factors, which establishes a healthy balance between 'patient-centric' and 'family-centric' decision making. The lack of a universal approach to prognostic disclosure techniques emphasizes the need for a systematic review of contemporary practice.MethodsA systematic review of the literature was conducted till June 2020 using themes based on cancer, communication, prognostic disc

Barriers to the Provision and Utilization of Palliative Care in Africa: A Rapid Scoping Review.

Palliative care (PC) has continued to be less available, underutilized, and unintegrated in many of the healthcare systems, especially in Africa. This scoping review synthesized existing published papers on adult PC in Africa, to report the barriers to PC and to assess the methodologies used in these studies. Eight electronic databases and Google Scholar were searched to identify relevant studies published between 2005 and 2018. Overall, 42 publications (34 empirical studies and 9 reviews) that reported issues related to barriers to adult PC were selected. Three themes identified were individu

Challenges in the cultural adaptation of the German Myeloma Patient Outcome Scale (MyPOS): an outcome measure to support routine symptom assessment in myeloma care.

BACKGROUND: Patients with multiple myeloma report more problems with quality of life (QoL) than other haematological malignancies over the course of their incurable illness. The patient-centred Myeloma Patient Outcome Scale (MyPOS) was developed to assess and monitor symptoms and supportive care factors in routine care. Our aim was to translate and culturally adapt the outcome measure to the German context, and to explore its face and content validity. METHODS: Translation and cultural adaptation following established guidelines used an exploratory, sequential mixed method study design. Steps

Patient Perspectives on Palliative Care Outreach to Adults Living With Homelessness.

ImportancePeople experiencing homelessness face higher rates of early mortality, multimorbidity, and unmet needs at the end of life, but despite these risks, they often encounter systemic barriers to accessing palliative care. Outreach-based models have emerged to address this gap, yet little is known about how these models are perceived by those receiving care.ObjectiveTo evaluate a palliative care outreach intervention, the Palliative Education and Care for the Homeless (PEACH) program, from the perspective of patients living with homelessness and life-limiting illness.Design, setting, and p

Managing Matajoosh: determinants of first Nations' cancer care decisions.

BackgroundAccessing cancer treatment requires First Nation peoples living in rural and remote communities to either commute to care, or to relocate to an urban centre for the length or part of the treatment. While Canadians living in rural and remote communities must often make difficult decisions following a cancer diagnosis, such decisions are further complicated by the unique policy and socio-historical contexts affecting many First Nation peoples in Canada. These contexts often intersect with negative healthcare experiences which can be related to jurisdictional confusion encountered when

ESMO/ASCO Recommendations for a Global Curriculum in Medical Oncology Edition 2023.

The European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) and ASCO are publishing a new edition of the ESMO/ASCO Global Curriculum (GC) with contributions from more than 150 authors. The purpose of the GC is to provide recommendations for the training of physicians in medical oncology and to establish a set of educational standards for trainees to qualify as medical oncologists. This edition builds on prior ones in 2004, 2010, and 2016 and incorporates scientific advances and input from an ESMO ASCO survey on GC adoption conducted in 2019, which revealed that GC has been adopted or adapted in as many a

The indignities of shielding during the COVID-19 pandemic for people with sickle cell disorders: an interpretative phenomenological analysis.

This article seeks to understand the first-hand experiences of people with sickle cell, a recessively inherited blood disorder, who were identified as clinically extremely vulnerable during the COVID-19 pandemic. Part of a larger sequential mixed-methods study, this article uses a selective sample of eight qualitative semi-structured interviews, which were analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA). The first stage of IPA focused on practical concerns participants had correlated to understanding shielding and their feelings about being identified as clinically extremely vuln

Psychometric Properties of the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS-42 and DASS-21) in Patients with Hematologic Malignancies.

Background/Objectives: Patients with hematologic malignancies undergo prolonged, intensive treatments involving frequent hospitalizations and experience debilitating side effects. Consequently, they are at increased risk of developing symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress, which can undermine their quality of life. However, there is a scarcity of instruments validated for the simultaneous assessment of depression, anxiety, and stress within hematologic cancer populations. The aim of this study is to examine the construct validity, convergent and discriminant validity, and reliability of

The changing therapeutic landscape, burden of disease, and unmet needs in patients with cutaneous T-cell lymphoma.

Cutaneous T-cell lymphomas (CTCLs) have a chronic, relapsing course, and the most common subtypes are mycosis fungoides and Sézary syndrome. The disease causes visible skin alterations and can also cause alopecia, pruritus and pain, all of which can impact patients' health-related quality of life (HRQoL). The goal of treatment is to reduce symptoms and prevent disease progression. However, treatment recommendations are often based on low levels of evidence due to the lack of well-designed randomised clinical trials and treatment guidelines, and approved drugs vary considerably across different

Background: Patients with hematologic malignancy (HM) experience high symptom burden (SB) and diminished quality of life (QOL). While early palliative care (EPC) benefits solid tumors, its impact in HM remains uncertain. Objectives: To systematically review the effects of EPC on patient-centered outcomes in individuals with HM. Methods: MEDLINE, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and Scopus were searched for English-language articles published between 2020 and 2024.
