Brain nitric oxide induces facilitation of the micturition reflex through brain glutamatergic receptors in rats.

AIM: Brain nitric oxide (NO) have been reported in regulation of the sympatho-adrenomedullary system, which can affect voiding and storage functions. Therefore, we investigated effects of intracerebroventricularly (icv) administered 3-(4-morpholinyl)sydnonimine, hydrochloride (SIN-1) (NO donor) on the micturition reflex, focusing on their dependence on the sympatho-adrenomedullary system and on brain N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) and α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazole propionate (AMPA) receptors in urethane-anesthetized (0.8 g/kg, ip) male Wistar rats. METHODS: Plasma noradrenaline and adre…

Local and Global Changes in Brain Metabolism during Deep Brain Stimulation for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

Recent approaches have suggested that deep brain stimulation (DBS) for obsessive-compulsive disorder relies on distributed networks rather than local brain modulation. However, there is insufficient data on how DBS affects brain metabolism both locally and globally. We enrolled three patients with treatment-refractory obsessive-compulsive disorder with ongoing DBS of the bilateral ventral capsule/ventral striatum. Patients underwent resting-state 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose and positron emission tomography in both stimulation ON and OFF conditions. All subjects showed relative hypometabolism in pre…

Acute paradoxical brain herniation after decompressive craniectomy for severe traumatic brain injury: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Sinking skin flap syndrome or paradoxical brain herniation is an uncommon neurosurgical complication, which usually occurs in the chronic phase after decompressive craniectomy. We report a unique case presenting with these complications immediately after decompressive craniectomy for severe traumatic brain injury. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 65-year-old man had a right acute subdural hematoma (SDH), contusion of the right temporal lobe, and diffuse traumatic subarachnoid hemorrhage with midline shift to the left side. He underwent an emergency evacuation of the right SDH with a right deco…

Fractal dimension brain morphometry: a novel approach to quantify white matter in traumatic brain injury.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is the main cause of disability in people younger than 35 in the United States. The mechanisms of TBI are complex resulting in both focal and diffuse brain damage. Fractal dimension (FD) is a measure that can characterize morphometric complexity and variability of brain structure especially white matter (WM) structure and may provide novel insights into the injuries evident following TBI. FD-based brain morphometry may provide information on WM structural changes after TBI that is more sensitive to subtle structural changes post injury compared to conventional MRI …

Brain volumetric correlates of inhibition and cognitive flexibility 16 years following childhood traumatic brain injury.

Executive functions (EFs), such as inhibition and cognitive flexibility, are essential for everyday functioning, including regulation of socially appropriate emotional responses. These skills develop during childhood and continue maturing into early adulthood. The current study aimed to investigate the very long-term impact of childhood traumatic brain injury (TBI) on inhibition and cognitive flexibility, and to examine whether global white matter is associated with these abilities. Twenty-eight young adult survivors of childhood TBI (mean age at 16-year follow-up = 21.67 years, SD = 2.70) and…

Predictive patterns of sensory evoked potentials in comatose brain injured patients evolving to brain death.

OBJECTIVE: To assess whether Somatosensory Evoked Potentials (SEPs), recorded within 24h after ICU admission, are reliable predictors of brain death (BD) in comatose patients with acquired brain injury of various aetiologies. METHODS: SEPs were classified as absent (A), pathological (P), and normal (N). Considering SEP recordings from both hemispheres, 6 patterns were identified: NN, NP, PP, NA, AP, and AA. The final endpoint was BD. RESULTS: Of the 203 patients included in the study, 70 (34%) evolved toward BD. The survival analysis indicated that the combination of SEP patterns in a two-gr…

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor: its impact upon neuroplasticity and neuroplasticity inducing transcranial brain stimulation protocols.

Val66Met (rs6265) is a gene variation, a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) gene that codes for the protein BDNF. The substitution of Met for Val occurs at position 66 in the pro-region of the BDNF gene and is responsible for altered activity-dependent release and recruitment of BDNF in neurons. This is believed to manifest itself in an altered ability in neuroplasticity induction and an increased predisposition toward a number of neurological disorders. Many studies using neuroplasticity-inducing protocols have investigated the impact of the B…

Determination of vascular dementia brain in distinct frequency bands with whole brain functional connectivity patterns.

Recent studies have shown that multivariate pattern analysis (MVPA) can be useful for distinguishing brain disorders into categories. Such analyses can substantially enrich and facilitate clinical diagnoses. Using MPVA methods, whole brain functional networks, especially those derived using different frequency windows, can be applied to detect brain states. We constructed whole brain functional networks for groups of vascular dementia (VaD) patients and controls using resting state BOLD-fMRI (rsfMRI) data from three frequency bands - slow-5 (0.01 ≈ 0.027 Hz), slow-4 (0.027∼0.073 Hz), and whole…

Asymptomatic brain lesions in pilots: a comparative study with non-flying personnel using brain MRI.

INTRODUCTION: As modern aircraft fly at higher altitudes with rapid velocity, pilots have been put in the environment with a possible increasing risk of brain injury and could sustain cumulative brain damage. However, very few studies have investigated brain lesions using MRI in asymptomatic pilots. We evaluated asymptomatic pilots for the presence of cerebral lesions using MRI. METHODS: Enrolled were 31 healthy pilots of the Republic of Korea Air Force (ROKAF) on active flight duty and 31 healthy nonflying ROKAF personnel with ages of or over 45. We checked for the presence of acute and/or c…

A leaky blood-brain barrier, fibrinogen infiltration and microglial reactivity in inflamed Alzheimer's disease brain.

This study has used immunohistochemical examination of tissue obtained from Alzheimer's disease (AD) brains and rat hippocampus injected with Abeta(1-42) peptide to determine effects of induced inflammatory reactivity on integrity of blood-brain barrier (BBB) and viability of neurons. Tissue from AD, but not non-demented, brains exhibited a diffuse pattern of staining for fibrinogen and immunoglobulin (IgG) indicative of BBB leakiness with considerable fibrinogen immunoreactivity (ir) appearing in association with Abeta deposits. Immunostaining for the endothelial cell specific glycoprotein, v…

Mapping ALA-induced PPIX fluorescence in normal brain and brain tumour using confocal fluorescence microscopy.

We have mapped the microscopic distribution of aminolevulinic acid (ALA) induced protoporphyrin IX (PPIX) in normal rabbit brain and in brain tumour at various time intervals after i.v. injection of ALA. In normal brain, regions without a blood-brain barrier (BBB) such as the choroid plexus and meninges and also structures associated with the CSF synthesized the highest amounts of PPIX. We also detected ALA in the CSF within 2 h after ALA administration when the serum concentration was high. Our fluorescence studies have shown that ALA is able to cross an intact BBB and be metabolized in regio…

Craniotomy for supratentorial brain tumors: risk factors for brain swelling after opening the dura mater.

OBJECT: Cerebral swelling often occurs during craniotomy for cerebral tumors. The primary aim in this study was to determine risk factors (intracranial pressure [ICP], patient characteristics, histopathological features, neuroimaging characteristics, anesthetic regimen, and perioperative physiological data) predictive of brain swelling through the dural opening. As a secondary aim the authors attempted to define subdural ICP thresholds associated with brain swelling. METHODS: The study population consisted of 692 patients (mean age 50+/-15 years) scheduled for elective craniotomy for supraten…

Brain TXA(2)and PGI(2)levels related to diffuse brain injury with secondary insults.

Secondary insults such as hypotension and hypoxia with head injury are associated with increased mortality and morbidity in comparison with head injury alone. In the present study the changes of brain thromboxane A(2)(TXA(2)) and prostacyclin (PGI(2)) levels in a Marmarou's rodent model of diffuse brain injury with hypotension and hypoxia were observed and the effect of diaspirin cross linked haemoglobin solution (DCLHb) were also investigated. Thirty-two male Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were randomized into four groups: sham; head injury alone; head injury with secondary insults; and injury with…

Human brain in tissue culture. I. Acquisition, initial processing, and establishment of brain cell cultures.

This paper details the in vitro techniques used to establish cells in culture from the brains of 40 patients, most of whom had chronic neurologic disease. The clinical and pathologic features of these patients are given. The success in establihsing cell lines was dependent upon the origin of tissue (biopsy vs. autopsy), the site of removal from the brain, and various environmental and technical manipulations in vitro.

Investigating brain aging trajectory deviations in different brain regions of individuals with schizophrenia using multimodal magnetic resonance imaging and brain-age prediction: a multicenter study.

Although many studies on brain-age prediction in patients with schizophrenia have been reported recently, none has predicted brain age based on different neuroimaging modalities and different brain regions in these patients. Here, we constructed brain-age prediction models with multimodal MRI and examined the deviations of aging trajectories in different brain regions of participants with schizophrenia recruited from multiple centers. The data of 230 healthy controls (HCs) were used for model training. Next, we investigated the differences in brain age gaps between participants with schizophre…

Loss of Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) Resulting From Congenital- Or Mild Traumatic Brain Injury-Induced Blood-Brain Barrier Disruption Correlates With Depressive-Like Behaviour.

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) plays an important role in processes associated with neuroplasticity and neuroprotection. Evidence suggests that decreased BDNF levels in the central nervous system (CNS) represent a mechanism underlying the development of mood disorders. We hypothesize that both congenital and traumatic brain injury (mTBI)-induced blood-brain barrier (BBB) breakdown are responsible for brain BDNF depletion that contributes to the development of depressive-like symptoms. We employed a mouse model of innate differences in BBB integrity with high (HA) and low (LA) permeab…
