Malaria model with stage-structured mosquitoes.

A simple SEIR model for malaria transmission dynamics is formulated as our baseline model. The metamorphic stages in the mosquito population are then included and a simple stage-structured mosquito population model is introduced, where the mosquito population is divided into two classes, with all three aquatic stages in one class and all adults in the other class, to keep the model tractable in mathematical analysis. After a brief investigation of this simple stage-structured mosquito model, it is incorporated into the baseline model to formulate a stage-structured malaria model. A basic analy

Evaluating the contribution of weather variables to machine learning forecasts of visceral leishmaniasis in Brazil.

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL), a deadly neglected tropical disease, remains a persistent public health challenge in Brazil, where transmission is shaped by interacting climatic, environmental, and sociodemographic factors. Despite evidence that weather conditions influence VL dynamics, they remain underutilized for outbreak prediction. This study evaluates whether climate-informed machine learning can support early warnings for VL in Brazil. We developed machine learning models to forecast monthly VL case counts and classify outbreak risk using data from 2007 to 2024 across 113 Brazilian municip

Enhancing the water use efficiency model predictions for Platycladus orientalis and Quercus variabilis: Integrating the dynamics of carbon dioxide concentration and soil water availability.

Water use efficiency (WUE) is a tracer for plants on the trade-off exchange of water and carbon dioxide between terrestrial ecosystems and the atmosphere; therefore, a dynamic investigation of WUE and its driving factors will be of great significance to optimize water and carbon fitness and predict the plants' response to climate change. In our study, a modified water use efficiency model was proposed to improve the quantification of carbon and water processes by adding a photosynthesis-gs simulation dependent on CO2 concentration and soil moisture to the photosynthetic transpiration model (no

Climate-amplified wildland-urban interface disasters create persistent internal metal mixtures associated with pulmonary impairment.

Wildland-urban interface (WUI) wildfires are increasingly important climate-related exposure events because they burn built infrastructure and can mobilize legacy contaminants in addition to generating smoke. Although the acute respiratory effects of wildfire smoke are well described, persistent internal metal mixtures and their association with pulmonary function after WUI disasters remain poorly characterized. Using the August 2023 Maui wildfires as a sentinel model, we evaluated 1,400 adults enrolled 6 to 18 mo after the disaster in a community-engaged cohort. We measured 24 urinary metals

Ensemble Modeling Reveals Threats to Pollination Services From Asynchronous Range Shifts Between Camellia oleifera and Its Specialized Wild Bee Pollinators.

Camellia oleifera is a self-incompatible woody oil crop endemic to China that relies solely on insect pollination for seed production. Its flowering period, from late October to late December, coincides with seasonally low temperatures that suppress pollinator activity. Two oligolectic bee species, Colletes gigas and Andrena camellia, are Camellia oleifera's dominant and most efficient pollinators. This study employed ensemble species distribution models (SSDMs) to identify the potential distributions of C. oleifera and these two key pollinators under current and future climate scenarios. We i

Reduced rank regression-derived dietary patterns related to climate-sensitive micronutrients and their associations with child undernutrition among young children in rural Kenya: findings from the ALIMUS study.

BACKGROUND: Undernutrition among children remains a global public health challenge in sub-Saharan Africa. This study examined the associations of dietary patterns related to climate-sensitive micronutrients with undernutrition among children aged 6–23 months in Siaya County, Kenya. METHODS: We used cross-sectional baseline data of 626 mother-child pairs from a cluster-randomized controlled trial on nutrition counselling and home gardening. Dietary patterns and food intake were derived from a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire and identified using Reduced-Rank Regression (RRR) with

Temperature effect on scrub typhus incidence in South Korea: the projection for climate change.

OBJECTIVE: The influence of climate change on infectious disease dynamics is a subject of interest, but it demands robust scientific evidence. This study explores the short-term and long-term relationships between meteorological factors and the incidence of scrub typhus (ST) in South Korea. METHODS: From 2001 to 2018, data on meteorological conditions and weekly ST cases were sourced from national databases. A generalized additive model was used to visualize the relationship, while a generalized linear model was applied to measure the association's strength. Mean annual temperature change was

Cross-domain mangrove change detection and ecological response analysis under typhoon disturbance.

In recent years, global climate change and human activities have significantly degraded mangrove ecosystems. Developing efficient spatio-temporal change detection methods is crucial for assessing mangrove health. In this paper, we propose an automated framework with unsupervised domain adaptation capabilities, combining a Separable Transformer Neural Network with a Residual Stacking strategy (STNN-StackResNet) and an unsupervised spatio-temporal change detection model (USTC-StackNet). This approach achieves efficient modeling of mangrove evolution without manual labeling, attaining an average

Global and regional prediction of coccidiosis and ascaridiosis prevalence in extensive backyard chickens in low-income and middle-income countries.

Backyard chickens usually have open housing and scavenge for food, facilitating contact with infective forms of parasites present in the environment and increasing the risk of parasitic infections. Coccidiosis and ascaridiosis are two internal parasites in scavenging chickens that cause production losses to farmers. Prevalence data of these two diseases are scarce in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) but necessary to assess the burden of disease in backyard chickens. This study estimates the clinical prevalence of coccidiosis and ascaridiosis at the country and regional levels in

Navigating Complex Implementation Contexts: Overcoming Barriers and Achieving Outcomes in a National Initiative to Scale Out Housing First in Canada.

The scaling out of Housing First (HF) programs was examined in six Canadian communities, in which a multi-component HF training and technical assistance (TTA) was provided. Three research questions were addressed: (a) What were the outcomes of the TTA in terms of the development of new, sustained, or enhanced programs, and fidelity to the HF model? (b) How did the TTA contribute to implementation and fidelity? and (c) What contextual factors facilitated or challenged implementation and fidelity? A total of 14 new HF programs were created, and nine HF programs were sustained or enhanced. Fideli

Regional air quality management aspects of climate change: impact of climate mitigation options on regional air emissions.

We investigate the projected impact of six climate mitigation scenarios on U.S. emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and nitrogen oxides (NOX) associated with energy use in major sectors of the U.S. economy (commercial, residential, industrial, electricity generation, and transportation). We use the EPA U.S. 9-region national database with the MARKet Allocation energy system model to project emissions changes over the 2005 to 2050 time frame. The modeled scenarios are two carbon tax, two low carbon transportation, and two biomass fuel choice scenarios. In the lower carbon t

Tick-borne encephalitis transmission risk: its dependence on host population dynamics and climate effects.

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is a human disease caused by a flavivirus that is spread by ticks (Ixodes ricinus). In 2011 and 2012, the highest TBE incidence ever was recorded in Sweden. It has been proposed that warmer spring temperatures result in higher survival of ticks and thus high incidence of TBE. Here, analyses were done of time series of TBE for 1976-2011 in relation to the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), mean summer temperatures, and yearly number of harvested European hare (Lepus europeaus), roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), and red fox (Vulpes vulpes) in the County of Stockholm, t

Drivers of post-fire resprouting-based resilience of co-occurring species in Mediterranean SE Spain.

Resprouting is a major mechanism of post-fire persistence in Mediterranean woody plants, but quantifying its contribution to resilience is difficult when pre-disturbance data are unavailable. We assessed post-fire resprouting-based resilience in nine co-occurring woody species from southeastern Iberia and tested whether its drivers were consistent across species. We developed species-specific allometric equations from unburned individuals to estimate pre-fire biovolume. Resilience was quantified as the normalized biovolume recovery rate (NBRR), based on the ratio between post-fire biovolume me

Re-emergence of Aedes aegypti (Linnaeus) in Egypt: Predicting distribution shifts under climate changes.

Aedes aegypti, the primary vector of several medically significant arboviruses-including dengue fever, yellow fever, chikungunya and Zika-was successfully eradicated from Egypt in 1963. However, since 2011, there have been increasing reports of its re-emergence, alongside dengue outbreaks in southern Egyptian governorates, raising significant public health concerns. This study aimed to model the current and future distribution of Ae. aegypti in Egypt. Local occurrence data were integrated with bioclimatic, anthropogenic and biological environmental variables to identify key factors influencing

Effects of climate change on the occurrence and distribution of Western equine encephalitis virus in South America.

OBJECTIVES: The Western equine encephalitis virus (WEEV) is a globally relevant vector-borne pathogen that causes encephalitis. The role of environmental variables in the epidemiology of WEEV has become greater in the context of climate change. In December 2023, a significant resurgence of WEEV began in South America, with major ongoing outbreaks in Argentina and Uruguay. In this study, we employed a machine learning algorithm to model the distribution of WEEV in South America, considering both present and future scenarios. STUDY DESIGN: Ecological retrospective study. METHODS: We conducted
