Bladder pain syndrome and pregnancy.

Bladder pain syndrome (BPS) is a poorly understood condition. In pregnancy, lower urinary tract symptoms and pain are common, but the possibility of BPS is rarely considered and almost never explored. The consequences of BPS on pregnancy and vice versa are poorly understood, and management options appear to be limited. This article reviews the current evidence to allow us to better counsel, investigate, diagnose and manage patients with suspected or known BPS who fall pregnant or who are considering pregnancy. MEDLINE, EMBASE and PubMed were searched for a combination of mesh terms of keywords

Recommendations on the use of intravesical hyaluronic acid instillations in bladder pain syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Bladder pain syndrome (BPS) is a complex syndrome, without a clearly defined etiology that encompasses different entities, such as interstitial cystitis. This leads to difficulties in establishing a precise definition, obtaining accurate prevalence data, and defining diagnostic criteria and standardized assessment methods. Moreover, there is no consensus regarding the treatment of BPS. Intravesical instillations with hyaluronic acid (HA) are an option, although no specific recommendations have been made yet. OBJECTIVE: To synthesize the scientific evidence on the therapeutic opt

Pilot randomized controlled trial of a hypnosis intervention for women with bladder pain syndrome.

AIMS: To evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of a randomized controlled trial of a hypnosis intervention for the treatment of bladder pain syndrome/interstitial cystitis (BPS/IC) in women. METHODS: We conducted a parallel arm, non-blinded, pilot randomized controlled trial of standardized hypnosis sessions including a hypnosis web tool versus usual care in adult women with BPS/IC. Pilot study outcomes included feasibility domains: process, resources and management, safety, and acceptability. Clinical outcomes of lower urinary tract symptoms and quality of life were measured using valid

Circulating sex steroids and bladder pain sensitivity in dysmenorrhea.

Although elevated estradiol levels facilitate chronic pelvic pain in animal models, it remains to be determined whether sex steroid levels are altered in a cross-section of women with chronic pelvic pain (CPP) and those at-risk for developing CPP. We sought to determine if sex steroid levels are increased in women with menstrual pain and whether those changes were more extreme in two groups of women with worsened pelvic pain profiles: a) dysmenorrhea plus evidence of bladder pain sensitivity and b) bladder pain syndrome. Serum samples were collected during the mid-luteal phase to measure estra

Delayed Urinary Symptoms Induced by Ketamine.

One of the side-effects of ketamine abuse is genito-urinary damage. This report describes a case of a former ketamine user who presented with urinary symptoms associated with ketamine years after stopping consumption. This was a 26-year-old male with a history of ketamine abuse. He started treatment for alcohol dependence at age 19. He smoked marijuana daily and denied any other drug use. During the follow-up, urinary symptoms were evidenced (dysuria, frequency, urgency, incontinence, nocturia, hematuria, and suprapubic pain). Urinary symptoms started two years ago and worsened over time. The

Bladder pain syndrome.

Bladder pain syndrome is a deceptively intricate symptom complex that is diagnosed on the basis of chronic pelvic pain, pressure, or discomfort perceived to be related to the urinary bladder, accompanied by at least one other urinary symptom. It is a diagnosis of exclusion in a patient who has experienced the symptoms for at least 6 weeks in the absence of any confusable diseases that may give rise to the symptoms. Symptoms compatible with the diagnosis are now thought to affect up to 3% of the female population in the United States with a 5:1 female-to-male preponderance. Diagnosis and treatm

[Rehabilitation of women suffering chronic cystitis in the postmenopausal period with the use of an AMUS-01 - Intramag apparatus equipped with a Rektomassazher device].

The objective of the present study was to develop a rationale for the local treatment of chronic recurring cystitis in the postmenopausel period. To this effect, 76 patients at the mean age of 66.4 years with this pathology were examined and the data obtained were compared with observations of control postmenopausel women receiving traditional local substitution hormonal therapy. In the patients of the study group, this treatment was supplemented by intravaginal vibro-magnetotherapy and the conventional antibacterial therapy was replaced by local electrophoresis. All local physiotherapeutic pr

Hypertension and urologic chronic pelvic pain syndrome: An analysis of MAPP-I data.

BACKGROUND: Urologic chronic pelvic pain syndrome (UCPPS), which includes interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) and chronic prostatitis (CP/CPPS), is associated with increased voiding frequency, nocturia, and chronic pelvic pain. The cause of these diseases is unknown and likely involves many different mechanisms. Dysregulated renin-angiotensin-aldosterone-system (RAAS) signaling is a potential pathologic mechanism for IC/BPS and CP/CPPS. Many angiotensin receptor downstream signaling factors, including oxidative stress, fibrosis, mast cell recruitment, and increased inflammator

The effect of the pandemic period on Bladder Pain Syndrome patients under amitriptyline treatment.

INTRODUCTION: COVID-19 is a disease that may cause anxiety, depression, and stress. Bladder pain syndrome (BPS) is a disease in which stress and psychological factors might negatively affect its course. In this study, we aimed to examine the possible clinical aggregation of the pandemic period on BPS patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 35 BPS patients diagnosed between 2010 and 2018 were included. All patients were using medical treatment, and the follow-up period was at least 6 months. According to our clinical follow-up protocol, the BPS patients were given the King's Health Questio

Intravesical sustained release system of lidocaine and oxybutynin results from in vitro and animal study.

PURPOSE: Interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) is a chronic debilitating condition of unknown etiology. Intravesical lidocaine demonstrated pain relief in patients with IC/BPS. Intravesical oxybutynin has shown therapeutic efficacy in patients with urinary bladder disorders. However, loss of drug with urination requiring multiple administrations and immediate dilution of drug concentration by residual urine in the bladder mitigated intravesical use of both drugs in clinical practice. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of fixed-dose combination of lidoc

Acute Intravesical Capsaicin for the Study of TRPV1 in the Lower Urinary Tract: Clinical Relevance and Potential for Innovation.

Capsaicin acts on sensory nerves via vanilloid receptors. TRPV1 has been extensively studied with respect to functional lower urinary tract (LUT) conditions in rodents and humans. We aimed to (1) provide background information on capsaicin and TRPV1 and its mechanisms of action and basis for clinical use, (2) review the use of acute intravesical capsaicin instillation (AICI) in rodents to mimic various LUT disorders in which capsaicin sensitive C-fibers are involved and (3) discuss future innovative treatments. A comprehensive search of the major literature databases until June 2022 was conduc

Acupuncture for female bladder pain syndrome: a randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Growing evidence supports acupuncture for several pain conditions including chronic prostatitis. This study aimed to determine the safety, tolerability, and effectiveness of acupuncture in reducing pain in women with interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective randomized single-blinded study compared electro-acupuncture (EA) to minimal acupuncture (MA) after 6 weekly treatments and again after 6 weeks of no treatment. Pain was assessed using the Brief Pain Inventory-Short Form (worst pain, average pain, pain severity, pain interf

Repurposing pentosan polysulfate sodium as hyaluronic acid linked polyion complex nanoparticles for the management of osteoarthritis: A potential approach.

Osteoarthritis is still a disease burden for pharmaceutical scientists and strategy makers. It is associated with the chronic inflammation of joints especially weight-bearing joints like knee, hip, backbone, and phalanges. NSAIDs that are used for the management of inflammation associated with osteoarthritis have high side effects related to gastric upset, gastric ulcer, and long term treatment associated with liver and kidney damage. Nanotechnology has gained a huge scope for the management of arthritis as it can reach out to the deep inside the cell and alter cellular physiology as desired.
