The capacity of Kupffer cells and blood monocytes to release free oxygen radicals was studied by chemiluminescence (CL) response during hepatic amebiasis in guinea pigs. Guinea pigs infected with Entamoeba histolytica intramesenterically were sacrificed on days 0, 2, 5 and 8 post-infection. Hepatic lesions were graded I-IV. Protozoa of the nose, mouth, and pharynx of 30 randomly chosen male caries patients at an odontological clinic of the National Autonomous University of Mexico, in Mexico City, were surveyed by culture from swabs. The congenitally athymic nude (nu/nu) mouse was studied as a model for amebic liver disease, using Entamoeba histolytica. Despite intrahepatic inoculation of massive numbers of amebae, we could not produce sustained infections in nu/nu mice. Protozoal parasites, especially cryptosporidiosis and giardiasis, cause diarrhoea and contribute to impaired growth, neurocognitive development and mortality.
