Effect and prediction of long-term weather and pollutant exposure on hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome: based on statistical models.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have typically explored daily lagged relationships between hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) and meteorology, with a limited seasonal exploration of monthly lagged relationships, interactions, and the role of pollutants in multiple predictions of hemorrhagic fever. METHODS: Our researchers collected data on HFRS cases from 2005 to 2018 and meteorological and contaminative factors from 2015 to 2018 for the northeastern region. First, we applied the moving epidemic method (MEM) to estimate the epidemic threshold and intensity level. Then, we used a distri

Machine learning application for classification of Alzheimer's disease stages using 18F-flortaucipir positron emission tomography.

BACKGROUND: The progression of Alzheimer's dementia (AD) can be classified into three stages: cognitive unimpairment (CU), mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and AD. The purpose of this study was to implement a machine learning (ML) framework for AD stage classification using the standard uptake value ratio (SUVR) extracted from 18F-flortaucipir positron emission tomography (PET) images. We demonstrate the utility of tau SUVR for AD stage classification. We used clinical variables (age, sex, education, mini-mental state examination scores) and SUVR extracted from PET images scanned at baseline.

Develop a diagnostic tool for dementia using machine learning and non-imaging features.

BACKGROUND: Early identification of Alzheimer's disease or mild cognitive impairment can help guide direct prevention and supportive treatments, improve outcomes, and reduce medical costs. Existing advanced diagnostic tools are mostly based on neuroimaging and suffer from certain problems in cost, reliability, repeatability, accessibility, ease of use, and clinical integration. To address these problems, we developed, evaluated, and implemented an early diagnostic tool using machine learning and non-imaging factors. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 654 participants aged 65 or older from the Nu

Novel machine learning models to predict pneumonia events in supratentorial intracerebral hemorrhage populations: An analysis of the Risa-MIS-ICH study.

BACKGROUND: Stroke-associated pneumonia (SAP) contributes to high mortality rates in spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage (sICH) populations. Accurate prediction and early intervention of SAP are associated with prognosis. None of the previously developed predictive scoring systems are widely accepted. We aimed to derive and validate novel supervised machine learning (ML) models to predict SAP events in supratentorial sICH populations. METHODS: The data of eligible supratentorial sICH individuals were extracted from the Risa-MIS-ICH database and split into training, internal validation, and e

Comprehensive analysis of mitochondrial unfolded protein response related genes for prognosis and therapeutic response in pancreatic cancer.

BACKGROUND: Pancreatic cancer (PC) is a highly aggressive malignancy of the digestive system, with an extremely poor prognosis. The mitochondrial unfolded protein response (UPRmt) can maintain mitochondrial homeostasis and promote tumor progression and chemotherapy resistance. Nevertheless, the functions of UPRmt-related genes (MRGs) in PC remain undefined. METHODS: Gene expression data were obtained from TCGA, GEO, and CPTAC databases. Consensus clustering was performed based on MRGs, with subsequent evaluation of immune infiltration patterns across clusters. Prognostic MRGs were identified

Machine Learning Models Using Hospital Admission Characteristics Do Not Optimally Predict Nosocomial Infection Development in a Global Cirrhosis Cohort.

INTRODUCTION: Nosocomial infections (NIs) in cirrhosis are associated with high mortality but could be preventable. Logistic regression (LR) models have failed to identify high-risk patients. We aimed to develop machine learning (ML) models to predict NI. METHODS: The CLEARED consortium consists of prospectively enrolled cirrhosis inpatients from >120 centers. Using day-of-admission clinical data, 3 ML approaches (random forest [RF], extreme gradient boosting, and neural networks [NNs]) were used to predict NI. Data were split 80:20 for training and testing stratified by the outcome. Models w

Machine learning and explainable artificial intelligence for the prevention of waterborne cryptosporidiosis and giardiosis.

Cryptosporidium and Giardia are important parasitic protozoa due to their zoonotic potential and impact on human health, and have often caused waterborne outbreaks of disease. Detection of (oo)cysts in water matrices is challenging and extremely costly, thus only few countries have legislated for regular monitoring of drinking water for their presence. Several attempts have been made trying to investigate the association between the presence of such (oo)cysts in waters with other biotic or abiotic factors, with inconclusive findings. In this regard, the aim of this study was the development of

Noninvasive prediction of esophagogastric varices in hepatitis B: An extreme gradient boosting model based on ultrasound and serology.

BACKGROUND: Severe esophagogastric varices (EGVs) significantly affect prognosis of patients with hepatitis B because of the risk of life-threatening hemorrhage. Endoscopy is the gold standard for EGV detection but it is invasive, costly and carries risks. Noninvasive predictive models using ultrasound and serological markers are essential for identifying high-risk patients and optimizing endoscopy utilization. Machine learning (ML) offers a powerful approach to analyze complex clinical data and improve predictive accuracy. This study hypothesized that ML models, utilizing noninvasive ultrasou

Predicting the number of oocytes retrieved from controlled ovarian hyperstimulation with machine learning.

STUDY QUESTION: Can machine learning predict the number of oocytes retrieved from controlled ovarian hyperstimulation (COH)? SUMMARY ANSWER: Three machine-learning models were successfully trained to predict the number of oocytes retrieved from COH. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: A number of previous studies have identified and built predictive models on factors that influence the number of oocytes retrieved during COH. Many of these studies are, however, limited in the fact that they only consider a small number of variables in isolation. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION: This study was a retrospectiv

Interactive effects of ozone pollution and atmospheric drought on crop yields: A spatially explicit assessment.

Surface ozone pollution and drought are escalating threats to agroecosystem sustainability, yet their combined impacts on crop production remain poorly quantified, especially under future climate scenarios. Here, we apply an interpretable machine learning framework to assess the nonlinear interactions between ozone exposure, vapor pressure deficit (VPD), and other climate variables on U.S. soybean yields from 1981 to 2021. Using two severe drought years (1988 and 2012) as historical analogs reflecting pre- and post-ozone regulation and cultivar improvement contexts, we simulated soybean yield
