Satisfaction with sexual life in people living with HIV/AIDS: the persistent weight of the fear of transmission.

Sexual life is an important dimension of quality of life, which may be affected by the fear of transmission in people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA), despite the fact that antiretroviral therapy prevents person-to-person transmission. We, therefore, aimed to explore the sexual life satisfaction of PLWHA and its correlation with their fear of HIV transmission and self-esteem. Consecutive adult PLWHA from seven HIV care facilities in the Rhone-Alpes region, France, were asked to complete a self-administered, anonymous questionnaire concerning sociological and medical data, satisfaction with sexual

Oral mycoses and other opportunistic infections in HIV: therapy and emerging problems - a workshop report.

Oral mycoses and other opportunistic infections are recognized features of HIV infection even after four decades of the epidemic. The therapeutic options, challenges of therapy, and evolving patterns of opportunistic infections were evaluated by the workshop. It was observed that high Candida counts and infection are still more prevalent in HIV-positive individuals even in the era of antiretroviral therapy. Furthermore, one or more non-Candida albicans are present in some HIV-positive individuals. While Candida species are more virulent in HIV infection, similar virulence may be present in oth

Sequence-specific alterations of epitope production by HIV protease inhibitors.

Ag processing by intracellular proteases and peptidases and epitope presentation are critical for recognition of pathogen-infected cells by CD8+ T lymphocytes. First-generation HIV protease inhibitors (PIs) alter proteasome activity, but the effect of first- or second-generation PIs on other cellular peptidases, the underlying mechanism, and impact on Ag processing and epitope presentation to CTL are still unknown. In this article, we demonstrate that several HIV PIs altered not only proteasome but also aminopeptidase activities in PBMCs. Using an in vitro degradation assay involving PBMC cyto

Assessing the effect of hormonal contraception on HIV acquisition in observational data: challenges and recommended analytic approaches.

INTRODUCTION: Determining whether hormonal contraception, particularly the injectable contraceptive depot-medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA), increases a woman's risk of HIV acquisition is a priority question for public health. However, assessing the relationship between various hormonal contraceptive methods and HIV acquisition with observational data involves substantial analytic design issues and challenges. Studies to date have used inconsistent approaches and generated a body of evidence that is complex and challenging to interpret. METHODS: In January 2013, the United States Agency for

The mouth in HIV/AIDS: markers of disease status and management challenges for the dental profession.

There are over 30 million people in the world with HIV infection and, whilst the rate of new infections is slowing, this number continues to grow. Although in Australia the overall prevalence of HIV infection in adults aged 15-49 is officially estimated at only 0.2%, representing less than 20,000 people living with HIV and AIDS, our geographical area contains populations with prevalences exceeding 10 times this. Oral health professionals must therefore practise safe, standard infection control at all times and be aware of the oral manifestations of HIV disease. These are predominantly opportun

Co-infection with human immunodeficiency virus-type 1 (HIV-1) and cytomegalovirus in two intravenous drug users.

A mononucleosis-like illness is frequently recognized retrospectively as the first manifestation of infection with human immunodeficiency virus-type 1 (HIV-1). This acute but transient retroviral syndrome may include symptoms such as malaise, fever, sweats, myalgia, arthralgia, maculopapular rash, diarrhea, and lymphocytic meningitis. We observed two intravenous drug users who developed a severe, febrile illness with subsequent oral thrush (one also had biopsy-proven esophageal candidiasis). Both patients had weight loss, arthralgia, myalgia, and fatigue. These symptoms occurred two weeks afte

Antiviral drug development for the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus infections. An overview.

During 1987, a new era in the approach to treatment of severe human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-I infections was entered. The increased availability of zidovudine and its licensure in many countries have resulted in its widespread use. With these developments have come a multitude of new questions. How long will clinical benefit be sustained? Will zidovudine be useful in asymptomatic HIV carriers and in other HIV-related conditions? How can the diversion of zidovudine to unproven indications be averted so that properly controlled clinical trials are conducted? Can better treatment regimens be

Understanding Uganda's early adoption of novel differentiated HIV treatment services: a qualitative exploration of drivers of policy uptake.

BACKGROUND: Although differentiated service delivery (DSD) for HIV treatment was endorsed by the WHO in its landmark 2016 guidelines to lessen patients' need to frequently visit clinics and hence to reduce unnecessary burdens on health systems, uptake has been uneven globally. This paper is prompted by the HIV Policy Lab's annual report of 2022 which reveals substantial variations in programmatic uptake of differentiated HIV treatment services across the globe. We use Uganda as a case study of an 'early adopter' to explore the drivers of programmatic uptake of novel differentiated HIV treatmen

Coinfection of HIV-1 with Schistosoma spp. and with Intestinal Parasites in Patients Attending Boane Health Center, Maputo Province, Mozambique.

BACKGROUND: It is hypothesized that schistosomiasis and intestinal parasites increase susceptibility to HIV-1 infection and enhance AIDS progression by immunomodulation. This study aims to compare the prevalence and risk factors for schistosomiasis and intestinal parasites in HIV-1 infected and uninfected persons and to evaluate the association between HIV-1 induced immunosuppression and risk factors for parasite infection. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study conducted at Boane Health Center in Boane village, Maputo Province from April to June 2017 in 280 patients aged over 5 years. Fro

Integrating Cervical Cancer Screening and Human Immunodeficiency Virus Care among Women Living with Human Immunodeficiency Virus: A Call for Action.

Cervical cancer is a leading cause of cancer-related morbidity and mortality in women living with human immunodeficiency virus (WLHIV) worldwide. However, there is no nationwide public health policy in India that aims to prevent cervical cancer among WLHIV. Thus, the integration of cervical cancer preventive services within existing HIV care programs is essential. This study proposes a framework for healthcare providers and policymakers to enhance the integration of cervical cancer screening services within existing HIV care programs in India. This aims to improve access to early detection and

"They Give you a bus Ticket and They Kick you Loose": A Qualitative Analysis of Post-Release Experiences among Recently Incarcerated Women Living with HIV in Metro Vancouver, Canada.

To explore the transition from correctional facilities to community among women living with HIV in Vancouver, Canada, we interviewed 19 recently incarcerated women and 6 service providers. Findings highlighted heightened risk of violence at release, a lack of immediate supports, challenges accessing safe housing and addictions treatment, and interruptions in HIV treatment and care. In the face of structural barriers, women blamed themselves for not being able to break the cycle of incarceration. There is a critical need for enhanced pre-release planning with a priority on housing and substance

The 18F-FDG PET/CT finding of a condyloma acuminata mimicking primary anorectal carcinoma in an HIV-infected patient.

This case report describes a condyloma acuminata with intense FDG uptake mimicking primary anorectal carcinoma in an HIV-infected patient.A 44-year-old HIV-positive homosexual man with a history of lymphoma underwent an 18F-FDG PET/CT for restaging. A focal intense hypermetabolic lesion around the anorectal area was found by the PET/CT and it was suggested as a tumorous lesion. However, the lesion was not detected on the contrast-enhanced abdominal CT. Via a sigmoidoscopy, cauliflower-like masses were visualized in the intra-anal area. The tumor was surgically excised and proven to be condylom

Increases in total HIV-1 nucleic acid in whole blood precede plasma RNA rebound during pediatric analytical treatment interruption.

OBJECTIVES: In the absence of reliable biomarkers, analytical treatment interruption (ATI) is needed to evaluate HIV-1 cure/remission strategies. Children living with HIV-1 may have high potential to achieve cure/remission due to very-early antiretroviral therapy (ART) initiation combined with early-life immunity. However, pediatric ATI safety monitoring requires frequent blood sampling for early plasma viral rebound detection to facilitate prompt ART resumption. DESIGN: We hypothesized that viral rebound during ATI would be detected earlier by point-of-care (PoC) total HIV-1 nucleic acid (TN

Identification of people with low prevalence diseases in administrative healthcare records: A case study of HIV in British Columbia, Canada.

INTRODUCTION: Case-finding algorithms can be applied to administrative healthcare records to identify people with diseases, including people with HIV (PWH). When supplementing an existing registry of a low prevalence disease, near-perfect specificity helps minimize impacts of adding in algorithm-identified false positive cases. We evaluated the performance of algorithms applied to healthcare records to supplement an HIV registry in British Columbia (BC), Canada. METHODS: We applied algorithms based on HIV-related diagnostic codes to healthcare practitioner and hospitalization records. We eval

Determining intestinal parasitic infections (IPIs) in inmates from Kajang Prison, Selangor, Malaysia for improved prison management.

BACKGROUND: The prison management in Malaysia is proactively seeking to improve the health status of the prison inmates. Intestinal parasitic infections (IPIs) are widely distributed throughout the world and are still gaining great concern due to their significant morbidity and mortality among infected humans. In Malaysia, there is a paucity of information on IPIs among prison inmates. In order to further enhance the current health strategies employed, the present study aims to establish firm data on the prevalence and diversity of IPIs among HIV-infected and non-HIV-infected individuals in a

Novel genetic locus implicated for HIV-1 acquisition with putative regulatory links to HIV replication and infectivity: a genome-wide association study.

Fifty percent of variability in HIV-1 susceptibility is attributable to host genetics. Thus identifying genetic associations is essential to understanding pathogenesis of HIV-1 and important for targeting drug development. To date, however, CCR5 remains the only gene conclusively associated with HIV acquisition. To identify novel host genetic determinants of HIV-1 acquisition, we conducted a genome-wide association study among a high-risk sample of 3,136 injection drug users (IDUs) from the Urban Health Study (UHS). In addition to being IDUs, HIV-controls were frequency-matched to cases on env
