Parental psychopathology and the risk of suicidal behavior in their offspring: results from the World Mental Health surveys.

Previous research suggests that parental psychopathology predicts suicidal behavior among offspring; however, the more fine-grained associations between specific parental disorders and distinct stages of the pathway to suicide are not well understood. We set out to test the hypothesis that parental disorders associated with negative mood would predict offspring suicide ideation, whereas disorders characterized by impulsive aggression (for example, antisocial personality) and anxiety/agitation (for example, panic disorder) would predict which offspring act on their suicide ideation and make a s

Tryptophan degradation is associated with risk-taking propensity in methamphetamine users with treated HIV infection.

Few studies have examined neuroimmune pathways that could contribute to impulsivity in people living with HIV who use substances. Eighty-four methamphetamine-using, sexual minority men with an undetectable HIV viral load were administered the Balloon Analogue Risk Task (BART), a behavioral measure of risk-taking propensity. We examined the associations between kynurenine/tryptophan ratio and phenylalanine/tyrosine ratio with BART scores using multiple linear regression. A higher kynurenine/tryptophan ratio was independently associated with greater BART scores (beta = 0.25; 95% CI = 0.05-1.23;

Examining the construct validity of the Psychopathic Personality Inventory-Revised: preferential correlates of fearless dominance and self-centered impulsivity.

Although the construct of psychopathy is frequently construed as a unitary syndrome, the Psychopathic Personality Inventory (PPI; Lilienfeld & Andrews, 1996) and its revision, the PPI-R (Lilienfeld & Widows, 2005), are composed of 2 scales, termed Fearless Dominance (FD) and Self-Centered Impulsivity (SCI), which appear to reflect orthogonal dimensions. In this study, we examined the construct validity of the FD and SCI scales of the PPI-R as markers of these constructs with a range of theoretically relevant correlates assessed across multiple domains in a sample of 200 forensic psychiatric in

Externalizing psychopathology and the error-related negativity.

Prior research has demonstrated that antisocial behavior, substance-use disorders, and personality dimensions of aggression and impulsivity are indicators of a highly heritable underlying dimension of risk, labeled externalizing. Other work has shown that individual trait constructs within this psychopathology spectrum are associated with reduced self-monitoring, as reflected by amplitude of the error-related negativity (ERN) brain response. In this study of undergraduate subjects, reduced ERN amplitude was associated with higher scores on a self-report measure of the broad externalizing const

Depression and non-suicidal self-injury: the mediating roles of childhood trauma and impulsivity.

BACKGROUND: This study investigates the factors contributing to non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) in individuals with depressive disorders, with a focus on how childhood trauma and impulsivity may function as mediating mechanisms. The findings aim to establish a theoretical framework that enhances clinicians' ability to assess suicide-related risks in this population more accurately and promptly. METHODS: This cross-sectional study enrolled patients diagnosed with depression who were hospitalized at Chongqing Mental Health Center between June 2019 and November 2021. All participants completed s

Hyperdopaminergic behavioral spectrum in Parkinson's disease: A review.

Impulse control disorders (ICDs) and other related behaviors, such as punding and dopamine dysregulation syndrome, are frequent yet underrecognized non-motor complications of dopamine replacement therapy (DRT) in Parkinson's disease (PD); they can also have a major negative impact on quality of life. They result from complex interactions between a given individual's predispositions, non-physiological dopaminergic stimulation and PD pathology. Also, sensitization of the mesocorticolimbic pathway, reflected by the psychotropic effects of dopaminergic treatment, plays a crucial role in the emerge

Childhood maltreatment, psychological dysregulation, and risky sexual behaviors in female adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: Maltreated female adolescents are at risk for engaging in sexual behaviors consistent with HIV infection and teen pregnancy. The current study applied a model positing the key role of psychological dysregulation in the development of adolescent females' sexual behavior. METHODS: The sample consisted of adolescent females aged 14-17 years who had experienced substantiated childhood maltreatment (n = 275) and a demographically matched, non-maltreated comparison group (n = 210). RESULTS: Multiple mediator analysis revealed that, when in company with a host of plausible mechanisms, se

Love addiction and gender modality: An empirical, comparative study involving Italian transgender and cisgender individuals.

INTRODUCTION: Love addiction is a state of addiction to relationships, from which dysfunctional emotions and behaviors develop, leading individuals to have a constant need for the other person and to failure in attempts of detachment. Given its recent scientific understanding, the study of love addiction has not yet been extended to the transgender community. AIMS: The present study aims to integrate gender modality into the study of love addiction. Specifically, the aims are to analyze the dynamics of love addiction by comparing a group of transgender people to a group of cisgender people, a

Comparing attention, impulsivity, and executive functions between patients with opiate use disorder: Buprenorphine maintenance treatment versus active users, in comparison with healthy controls.

BACKGROUND: Opioid use disorders (OUDs) affect over 16 million people worldwide, with a particularly high prevalence rate in Asia. OUDs are associated with significant health consequences, including neurocognitive impairment, which affects individuals' ability to make decisions, respond to stressful situations, and regulate behavior. Understanding the specific ways in which OUDs affect cognitive functioning is important in treatment considerations. METHODS: This study compared the attention, impulsivity, and executive functions of Turkish men with active OUD (n = 40) with those of men in remi

A Novel Missense Mutation in TNNI3K Causes Recessively Inherited Cardiac Conduction Disease in a Consanguineous Pakistani Family.

Cardiac conduction disease (CCD), which causes altered electrical impulse propagation in the heart, is a life-threatening condition with high morbidity and mortality. It exhibits genetic and clinical heterogeneity with diverse pathomechanisms, but in most cases, it disrupts the synchronous activity of impulse-generating nodes and impulse-conduction underlying the normal heartbeat. In this study, we investigated a consanguineous Pakistani family comprised of four patients with CCD. We applied whole exome sequencing (WES) and co-segregation analysis, which identified a novel homozygous missense

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Symptoms in Mothers and Fathers: Family Level Interactions in Relation to Parenting.

Previous studies linking parent ADHD symptoms to parenting have typically focused on each parent individually. To provide a broader understanding of family context, in this study, levels of inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity in mothers and fathers were examined, both individually and in combination, in relation to negative parenting and child-rearing disagreements. Two-parent families of 5 to 13 year old boys (126 with ADHD and 53 typically developing) participated. Parents reported their own ADHD symptoms and their perceptions of child-rearing disagreements. Parenting was measured usin

Levetiracetam in patients with impulsive aggression: a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: There are few controlled studies evaluating drug treatment for impulsive aggression. The objective of this study was to evaluate levetiracetam in patients with impulsive aggression, and whether diagnosis or other baseline characteristics predict response. METHOD: Outpatients with clinically significant impulsive aggression (meeting Coccaro et al. revised criteria for intermittent explosive disorder), without other psychiatric symptomatology clearly requiring treatment, were randomly assigned to levetiracetam or placebo, double-blind, for 10 weeks, at a variable dose with a maximum

Emotional Dysregulation as a Mediator Between Childhood Adversity and Negative Urgency in Borderline Personality Disorder.

BACKGROUND: The biosocial theory of borderline personality disorder (BPD) posits that emotional dysregulation develops from the transaction between a biological vulnerability and an invalidating environment (e.g., childhood adversity), and in turn leads to behavioral dyscontrol. This study aimed to empirically test this core mechanistic pathway in a non-Western clinical sample. METHODS: We hypothesized that the relationship between childhood adversity and the hallmark BPD trait of negative urgency (acting impulsively when distressed) would be mediated by difficulties in emotion regulation. A

Mechanisms of an Inhibitory Control Training to Reduce Binge Eating-The Randomized Controlled MIND BINGES Trial.

OBJECTIVE: Psychotherapy is the first-line treatment for eating disorders (EDs), yet only about half of patients benefit long-term. Bulimia nervosa (BN), Binge-Eating-Disorder (BED), and non-underweight EDs with regular binge eating (> 2 binge-eating episodes per month within the last 3 months) (OSFED/UFED) form a transdiagnostic group characterized by elevated impulsivity. Inhibitory control training (ICT) approaches targeting impulsivity may be relevant. However, the role of feedback within ICT remains insufficiently understood. METHOD: MIND BINGES is a prospective randomized controlled pro
