[Can Aedes aegypti, vector of the dengue virus, be controlled in Argentina?].

Since 2009, Argentina has faced recurrent dengue outbreaks, with a notable incidence increase during the 2023-2024 season. Despite following the guidelines from the Pan American Health Organization for controlling the Aedes aegypti mosquito, the disease remains a significant health problem. This review article analyzes the efficacy of the recommended actions and emphasizes the need for operational research to improve implementation. The Control de Aedes aegypti in Argentina traditional approach focuses on prevention, control and containment actions, including environmental sanitation, monitori

A systematic review on malaria and dengue vaccines for the effective management of these mosquito borne diseases: Improving public health.

Insect vector-borne diseases (VBDs) pose significant global health challenges, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions. The WHO has launched the "Global Vector Control Response (GVCR) 2017-2030" to address these diseases, emphasizing a comprehensive approach to vector control. This systematic review investigates the potential of malaria and dengue vaccines in controlling mosquito-borne VBDs, aiming to alleviate disease burdens and enhance public health. Following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, the review incorporated 39 new studies out of 934 identified records. It encompasses various studie

Two cases of acute endosulfan toxicity.

BACKGROUND: Endosulfan is widely used in insect control and is absorbed by both humans and animals through the intestinal tract, the lungs, and the skin. Organochlorine insecticides are highly toxic compounds that are responsible for a number of severe intoxications worldwide, with several deaths. A 9-year analysis by one of Turkey's poison control centers reported that pesticide intoxications accounted for 8.8% of 25,572 poisoning calls, with 80.3% of them relating to insecticides and 19.7% concerning rodenticides. CASE REPORTS: We present two cases of unintentional exposure to endosulfan, o…

Stereotyped responses of Drosophila peptidergic neuronal ensemble depend on downstream neuromodulators.

Neuropeptides play a key role in the regulation of behaviors and physiological responses including alertness, social recognition, and hunger, yet, their mechanism of action is poorly understood. Here, we focus on the endocrine control ecdysis behavior, which is used by arthropods to shed their cuticle at the end of every molt. Ecdysis is triggered by ETH (Ecdysis triggering hormone), and we show that the response of peptidergic neurons that produce CCAP (crustacean cardioactive peptide), which are key targets of ETH and control the onset of ecdysis behavior, depends fundamentally on the action

Recent developments in understanding dengue virus replication.

Dengue is the most important cause of mosquito-borne virus diseases in tropical and subtropical regions in the world. Severe clinical outcomes such as dengue hemorrhagic fever and dengue shock syndrome are potentially fatal. The epidemiology of dengue has undergone profound changes in recent years, due to several factors such as expansion of the geographical distribution of the insect vector, increase in traveling, and demographic pressure. As a consequence, the incidence of dengue has increased dramatically. Since mosquito control has not been successful and since no vaccine or antiviral trea

Entomological aspects of African onchocerciasis and observations on Simulium in the Sudan.

Following a review of the literature on Simuliidae, relevant to the African scene, since 1955, the authors present observations made on Simulium damnosum at Mvolo, Equatoria, and along the Damer reach of the Nile, in the Sudan and consider these in relation to the economic importance of this species and the possibilities for control of the fly and of onchocerciasis transmitted by it.Meta-diethyltoluamide has been shown to be an effective repellent against this species, and the authors suggest that this or some other modern insect repellent might usefully be made available locally. It is suggest

Mycoviruses and their role in fungal pathogenesis.

Nowadays, the focus of mycovirology research has expanded from plant pathogenic fungi and mycovirus mediated hypovirulence to include insect and human pathogenic fungi together with a range of mycovirus mediated phenotypes, such as hypervirulence, control of endophytic traits, regulation of metabolite production and drug resistance. In fungus-mycovirus-environmental interactions, the environment and both abiotic and biotic factors play crucial roles in whether and how mycovirus mediated phenotypes are manifest. Mycovirus infections result in alterations in the host transcriptome profile, via p

Interaction of insecticidal proteins from Pseudomonas spp. and Bacillus thuringiensis for boll weevil management.

Cotton crop yields are largely affected by infestations of Anthonomus grandis, which is its main pest. Although Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) derived proteins can limit insect pest infestations, the diverse use of control methods becomes a viable alternative in order to prolong the use of technology in the field. One of the alternative methods to Bt technology has been the utilization of certain Pseudomonas species highly efficient in controlling coleopteran insects have been used to produce highly toxic insecticidal proteins. This study aimed to evaluate the toxicity of IPD072Aa and PIP-47Aa pr

Identifying gaps in protection from malaria vector biting in rural Cambodia using an entomological assessment and human behaviour observations.

BACKGROUND: Forest-exposed populations remain the last significant, and most difficult to access, high-risk populations for malaria in Cambodia. Despite the availability of long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) and/or hammock nets (LLIHNs), continued malaria transmission indicates gaps in protection. This study aimed to identify these gaps among forest-exposed individuals in Plasmodium falciparum hotspots in two provinces in Cambodia, using entomological assessments and human behaviour observations (HBOs). METHODS: Anopheles bionomic traits were characterized using Human Landing Catches (HLC

Characterization of ATP-binding cassette transporters associated with emamectin benzoate tolerance: from the model insect Drosophila melanogaster to the agricultural pest Spodoptera frugiperda.

BACKGROUND: Multiple families of detoxification genes, including the increasingly recognized family of ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters, work together to influence the toxicity of synthetic insecticides and thus their resistance. Effective management of insecticide resistance requires identification of all toxicity-affecting members from each family of toxicity-related genes. RESULTS: Here, we used emamectin benzoate (EB), ABC transporters and Spodoptera frugiperda as a working case to test whether the strategy of 'from the model insect Drosophila melanogaster to agricultural pests' ca

Prevalence of Sodalis glossinidius and different trypanosome species in Glossina palpalis palpalis caught in the Fontem sleeping sickness focus of the southern Cameroon.

Tsetse flies are the cyclical vector of human and animal African trypanosomiasis. To improve vector control in order to achieve the elimination of human African trypanosomiasis (HAT) and boost the control of animal diseases, investigations have been undertaken on the tripartite association between tsetse, trypanosome, and symbionts. It is in this light that Sodalis glossinidius and different trypanosomes were identified in Glossina palpalis palpalis caught in Fontem in southern Cameroon. For this study, DNA was extracted from whole flies, and S. glossinidius and different trypanosome species w

Community-based tsetse fly control significantly reduces fly density and trypanosomosis prevalence in Metekel Zone, Northwest, Ethiopia.

African animal trypanosomosis is a great obstacle to livestock production where tsetse flies play a major role. Metekel zone is among the tsetse-infested areas. Community-based tsetse fly and trypanosomosis control using targets was conducted from June 2011 to May 2012 in Metekel zone, Ethiopia, to decrease trypanosomosis and tsetse fly. Cloth screen targets were developed, impregnated with 0.1 % deltamethrin, and deployed alongside rivers by the research team together with the community animal health workers. Monthly parasitological and entomological data were collected, processed, and compar

Community views on Cutaneous Leishmaniasis in Istalif, Afghanistan: implications for treatment and prevention.

Afghanistan currently has the world's largest outbreak of Cutaneous Leishmaniasis with more than 9% of the population (270,000) of Kabul affected. Transmitted through the bite of a sandfly, this disfiguring skin disease causes ulcerous lesions and permanent scarring. Physical, social, and economic consequences of the disease among those affected, their families, and communities are severe. Current control programs consist of both treatment and prevention. A clear understanding of the underlying factors influencing people's treatment-seeking behavior and utilization of prevention methods is cri

Control of onchocerciasis.

Onchocerciasis is a filarial infection which causes blindness and debilitating skin lesions. The disease occurs in 37 countries, of which 30 are found in Africa (the most affected in terms of the distribution and the severity of the clinical manifestations of the disease), six in the Americas and one in the Arabian Peninsula. The latest WHO Expert Committee on Onchocerciasis estimated that in 1995 around 17.7 million persons were infected, about 270,000 of whom were blind and another 500,000 severely visually impaired. The disease is responsible for 1 million DALYs. Eye disease from onchocerci

Role of flies and provision of latrines in trachoma control: cluster-randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Eye-seeking flies have received much attention as possible trachoma vectors, but this remains unproved. We aimed to assess the role of eye-seeking flies as vectors of trachoma and to test provision of simple pit latrines, without additional health education, as a sustainable method of fly control. METHODS: In a community-based, cluster-randomised controlled trial, we recruited seven sets of three village clusters and randomly assigned them to either an intervention group that received regular insecticide spraying or provision of pit latrines (without additional health education) t

Epidemiological impact of vector control. II. Changes in ocular onchocerciasis.

The impact of 10-11 years of successful vector control on ocular onchocerciasis was evaluated in the population of 13 villages in the central part of the Onchocerciasis Control Programme area. The prevalence of ocular microfilariae was found to have reduced remarkably and loads over 20 microfilariae in the anterior chamber of the eye or the cornea which was rampant before the start of vector control, were rare. Whilst limited change in the age specific prevalence of lesions of the posterior segment of the eye was recorded, significant reduction in the prevalence of lesions of the anterior segm

Anopheles gambiae phagocytic hemocytes promote Plasmodium falciparum infection by regulating midgut epithelial integrity.

For successful transmission, the malaria parasite must traverse tissue epithelia and survive attack from the insect's innate immune system. Hemocytes play a multitude of roles in mosquitoes, including defense against invading pathogens. Here, we show that hemocytes of the major malaria vector Anopheles gambiae promote Plasmodium falciparum infection by maintaining midgut epithelial integrity by controlling cell proliferation upon blood feeding. The mosquito's hemocytes also control the midgut microbiota and immune gene expression. Our study unveils novel hemocyte functions that are exploited b
