Long-lasting insecticidal net (LLIN) ownership, use and cost of implementation after a mass distribution campaign in Kasaï Occidental Province, Democratic Republic of Congo.

BACKGROUND: Long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLIN) are a highly effective means for preventing malaria infection and reducing associated morbidity and mortality. Mass free distribution campaigns have been shown to rapidly increase LLIN ownership and use. Around 3.5 million LLINs were distributed free of charge in the Kasaï Occidental Province in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in September-October 2014, using two different approaches, a fixed delivery strategy and a door-to-door strategy including hang-up activities. METHODS: Repeated community-based cross-sectional surveys were conduct

Microdistribution of the resistance of malaria vectors to deltamethrin in the region of Plateau (southeastern Benin) in preparation for an assessment of the impact of resistance on the effectiveness of Long Lasting Insecticidal Nets (LLINs).

BACKGROUND: This study aims to research two areas, one with a resistant and the other with a susceptible profile of An. gambiae to deltamethrin in the region of Plateau (southern Benin). In each area, eight localities were sought. Both areas were needed for the assessment of the impact of malaria vector resistance to pyrethroids on the effectiveness of Long Lasting Insecticidal Nets (LLINs). The susceptible area of An. gambiae to deltamethrin was used as a control. METHODS: In total, 119 localities in the region of Plateau were screened by sampling An. gambiae s.l larvae. Female mosquitoes re

Family biosocial variables driving adherence to the use of insecticide treated nets among under-five children managed for malaria in a rural hospital in eastern Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: As the distribution and awareness of free insecticide treated nets (ITNs) for malaria control continues to grow in Nigeria in order to meet the coverage target for the year 2010, a large gap exists between acquiring them, using them, and adhering to its use by families of under-five children. Therefore, the family biosocial variables driving its adherence need to be explored if the potential benefits of the nets are to be fully harnessed by families of under-five children in Nigeria. This study was aimed at describing family biosocial variables driving adherence to the use of insec

Malaria transmission and insecticide resistance of Anopheles gambiae (Diptera: Culicidae) in the French military camp of Port-Bouët, Abidjan (Côte d'Ivoire): implications for vector control.

An important vector control program is ongoing to lower the risk of malaria transmission in the French military camp of Port-Bouët, Abidjan (Côte d'Ivoire). However, some autochthonous malaria cases are regularly suspected. An entomological survey was conducted in June 2004 in the camp to assess malaria transmission and evaluate the pyrethroid and organophosphate resistance of the malaria vectors. The average mosquito biting rate was 178.0 bites per person per night. Mosquitoes belonging to the Anopheles gambiae (Diptera: Culicidae) complex and the Anopheles funestus group were collected. An.

House modifications using insecticide-treated screening of eave and window as a vector control tool: evidence from a semi-field system in Tanzania and simulated epidemiological impact.

BACKGROUND: Gaps in unimproved house structures, especially in eaves and windows, allow mosquito entry, increasing indoor vector-borne disease transmission. Simple modifications to such houses may reduce human exposure, and insecticide treatment may kill mosquitoes, benefiting all community members. This study evaluated insecticide-treated screening (ITS) for eaves and windows, incorporated with deltamethrin and piperonyl butoxide (PBO), compared to a permethrin and PBO-treated bednet in Tanzania. METHOD: A randomised Latin-square design (4 × 4) was used in four experimental huts within a lar

Socio-demographic predictors of insecticide-treated bed net ownership and utilization for protection against malaria by rural community members across five regions of Mainland Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Despite decades of control efforts. malaria burden in Tanzania remains high, with marked heterogeneity in transmission intensity across regions. Insecticide-treated bed nets (ITNs) are a core malaria intervention and are distributed through multiple channels in Tanzania to promote equitable access and use, yet disparities in ITNs ownership and use persist. This study evaluated socio-demographic predictors of ITNs ownership and use among rural communities from five regions with varying malaria endemicity. METHODS: A community-based cross-sectional survey covering individuals aged ≥

Efficacy of MiraNet Combi, a novel alpha-cypermethrin, pyriproxyfen, and piperonyl butoxide long-lasting insecticidal net against pyrethroid-resistant Anopheles funestus in western Kenya.

BACKGROUND: The widespread use of pyrethroid-only long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) has contributed substantially to malaria control; however, increasing pyrethroid resistance in malaria vectors threatens their continued effectiveness. To address this challenge, LLINs incorporating additional active ingredients have been developed. MiraNet® Combi is a novel LLIN incorporating alpha-cypermethrin, the insect growth regulator pyriproxyfen (PPF), and the synergist piperonyl butoxide (PBO). METHODS: We evaluated the efficacy of MiraNet® Combi against pyrethroid-resistant Anopheles funestus in

Genetic variations in three insecticide targets in the disease vector Culex quinquefasciatus from Mianyang, China: simultaneous detection of novel mutations RDL A296G and VGSC A1007T.

Culex quinquefasciatus is a major vector of filariasis and Japanese encephalitis in China. The application of insecticides is a regular measure for prevention and control of such mosquito-borne diseases. However, insecticide resistance, often caused by target-site mutations, threatens control efforts. In Mianyang City, a region previously reporting high pyrethroid resistance, the current genetic basis of resistance remains unclear. To address this gap, resistance-related mutations in three key insecticide targets, including acetylcholinesterase (AChE, encoded by ace1, conferring organophosphat…

What is the potential impact of insecticide treated nets in a semi-arid region of northern Kenya? An investigation of vector populations prior to ITN roll-out in Turkana, Kenya.

The malaria ecology of northern Kenya differs from the rest of the country. Transmission is highly seasonal and intense, despite the arid environment and low population density. The region faces several threats to malaria control including identification of significant P. vivax infection and an emerging invasive species, An. stephensi. Turkana County implemented its first mass bednet distribution in late 2024. Prior to this, we established a surveillance program to understand mosquito density, vector diversity, host preference and contribution to malaria transmission. We captured mosquitoes in

Insecticide-treated net utilization and associated factors among pregnant women in East Africa: evidence from the recent national demographic and health surveys, 2011-2022.

BACKGROUND: The pregnant woman, the fetus, and the newborn child are all at risk from malaria infection in sub-Saharan Africa. Employing insecticide-treated mosquito nets (ITNs) is one of the most efficient methods for avoiding malaria among expectant mothers. However, there is no literature that describes ITN use among pregnant women in East Africa or the contributing factors. Therefore, this study sought to identify the factors affecting pregnant women's ITN utilization in East Africa. METHODS: The most recent DHS (Demographic and Health Survey) data for the 11 East African countries from 2

High frequency of Voltage-gated sodium channel (VGSC) gene mutations in Aedes albopictus (Diptera: Culicidae) suggest rapid insecticide resistance evolution in Shanghai, China.

BACKGROUND: Dengue fever is an infectious disease that is imported into Shanghai, China and requires prevention and control measures. Controlling the vector Aedes albopictus through insecticide use is a key approach to dengue control. However, the rapid evolution of insecticide resistance in Ae. albopictus has raised concerns about the failure of dengue control efforts. Knockdown resistance (kdr) caused by point mutations in the voltage-gated sodium channel (VGSC) gene is a primary mechanism of pyrethroid resistance. In this study, we investigated the kdr mutations of Ae. albopictus in Shangha

Identification of a rapidly-spreading triple mutant for high-level metabolic insecticide resistance in Anopheles gambiae provides a real-time molecular diagnostic for antimalarial intervention deployment.

Studies of insecticide resistance provide insights into the capacity of populations to show rapid evolutionary responses to contemporary selection. Malaria control remains heavily dependent on pyrethroid insecticides, primarily in long lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs). Resistance in the major malaria vectors has increased in concert with the expansion of LLIN distributions. Identifying genetic mechanisms underlying high-level resistance is crucial for the development and deployment of resistance-breaking tools. Using the Anopheles gambiae 1000 genomes (Ag1000g) data we identified a very recen…
