Adolescents with spina bifida (SB), a congenital spinal cord impairment, are at high risk for negative outcomes. Even those with favorable cognitive status often fail to achieve independence, exhibiting poor functional and psychosocial outcomes. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between adaptation outcomes (functional status, self-management, and developmental competence) and SB condition-specific, adolescent protective factors, and family protective factors in a sample of adolescents with SB. Individual, interpersonal, and social developmental competence were explored.

Interpersonal Reconstructive Therapy (IRT) case formulations describe psychosocial mechanisms of affective and personality pathology in ways that enhance the effectiveness of psychotherapy for individuals. With a valid and reliable IRT case formulation, a clinician is in a better position to draw upon effective techniques to maximize treatment effects. The case formulation and treatment models for IRT were described in depth along with the IRT treatment model by Benjamin (2003/2006). Data in this report from 93 adult inpatients with complex and comorbid presentations suggest that the case form

The interpersonal behavior of individuals who have affective disorders can increase the likelihood of interpersonal conflicts. A related issue is whether vulnerability for developing affective disorder expresses itself in social interactions that affect the mood of interaction partners as well. Adolescents (n = 119) have been divided into subgroups: "mania risk" (scoring high on "Hypomanic Personality"); "unipolar risk" (scoring high on "Rigidity"); and a control group (scoring low on both scales). Interviews were conducted by raters blind to risk status. Interviewers provided ratings of their

We present a behavior observation study of interpersonal behavior in 96 female subjects, who had been screened for the presence of dependent, avoidant, narcissistic and histrionic personality disorder features. Each subject took part in three short role-plays, taken from assertiveness training. Afterwards, both the subject and her role-play partner judged, how assertive the subject had been. Although observation time was very short, dependent and avoidant subjects could be easily identified from their overly submissive behavior in the role-plays. Histrionic and narcissistic subjects did not sh

Caregiver burden and psychological distress were examined in a sample of 71 partners of Vietnam War combat veterans. Partners of patients (n = 51) diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) experienced more caregiver burden and had poorer psychological adjustment than did partners of veterans without PTSD (n = 20). Among PTSD caregivers, patient PTSD symptom severity and level of interpersonal violence were associated with increased caregiver burden. When accounting for patient PTSD symptom severity, hostility, presence of major depression, level of interpersonal violence, and health

BACKGROUND: Long-stay psychiatric rehabilitation units often struggle to provide emotionally meaningful and person-centred care because of institutional routines and limited opportunities for therapeutic engagement. Innovative relational interventions may help promote emotional connection and support more humanized models of psychiatric rehabilitation.
OBJECTIVE: To explore the emotional and relational processes observed during a structured shelter dog programme in a long-stay psychiatric rehabilitation setting and to examine how these processes were perceived to contribute to the humanizatio

BACKGROUND: Social cognition is often aberrant or impaired in psychotic disorders and related to functional outcomes. In particular, one core social cognitive bias - hostile attribution bias - is proposed to be implicated in paranoia, anxiety, mood disturbances and interpersonal conflict outcomes. However, questions remain about this domain's specificity to psychosis and its relationship to general functional outcomes.
AIMS: The present paper offers a descriptive and critical review of the literature on hostile attribution bias in psychotic disorders, in order to examine (1) its impact on per

OBJECTIVE: Previous research has identified a complex relationship between client-therapist synchrony and therapy outcomes. We investigated the ways in which depression severity influences this relationship.
METHOD: The sample was comprised of 30 clients undergoing a 16-session supportive-expressive dynamic therapy for depression. Client-therapist interpersonal synchrony was assessed using the Client-Therapist interpersonal Synchrony (CIB) coding system during five pre-selected sessions. After each session, the clients evaluated their satisfaction with the session. We employed multi-level mod

Early life trauma exposure is associated with substance use behavior during adolescence. The current study used a sample of trauma-exposed youth (ages 12-20, N = 2391) to determine if lifetime exposure to interpersonal or incidental trauma was associated with clinical diagnoses of substance use disorder across adolescence and whether the association was amplified by other risk factors. Interpersonal, but not incidental, trauma exposure conferred greater risk for substance use disorder diagnoses. Psychiatric comorbidity and family history of substance abuse were also identified as risk factors

Behavioral parenting programs, such as Incredible Years (IY), reduce conduct problems in children. However, conduct problems encompass many different behaviors, and little is known about the effects of parenting programs on specific aspects of children's conduct problems, such as children's relationships with others. The aim of this study was to examine, for the first time, the effects of the IY parenting program on children's levels of conflict with their parents, siblings, and peers. We used individual participant-level data pooled across 12 randomized trials in Europe, comprising a total of

This study aimed at examining how social distance modulates costly prosocial behaviors in the gain (i.e., helping another win a good outcome) and loss contexts (i.e., helping another avoid a bad outcome). To this end, participants were instructed to choose between two lotteries - One of the two lotteries was costly to their payment and always better than the other, which would result in the other person having a greater chance of ending up with more money - to give another person (a friend or a stranger) in the gain or loss context while electroencephalograms (EEGs) were recorded. The behavior

OBJECTIVES: Adolescents who deal with more emotional problems have been found to seek escape online, and struggle with excessive internet use (EIU). Poor social relationships have been linked with emotional problems. The current study investigated positive family and school relationships as protective factors against emotional problems and a preference for online social interaction (POSI), both specified as mediators of the association of family and school relationships with EIU. Cross-cultural differences in the model were tested.
METHODS: A multi-group SEM was tested on representative sampl

OBJECTIVES: Developmental literature highlights peer relationships and parental overprotection as factors implicated in the development of social anxiety. These factors are highly prevalent in the lives of people with intellectual disabilities; however research has not examined whether these factors are associated with social anxiety for this population.
METHODS: Twenty-one individuals without intellectual disabilities and 21 individuals with intellectual disabilities (aged 16-24 years) completed the Social Anxiety Scale for Adolescents with follow-up questions, the Glasgow Anxiety Scale-Inte

Social/intimate relationship status and quality are associated with health-promoting behaviors, while living alone or being isolated are adversely associated with physical and mental health outcomes. Limited work has investigated how particular components of one's social environment - usual living arrangements, satisfaction with those arrangements, and global social and family discord - are related to substance use reduction and intervention adherence. We investigated these questions in 270 individuals receiving study intervention for stimulant abuse/dependence through the multi-site Stimulant

Minimal research explores the impact of dementia and a dementia diagnosis on families from the unique vantage of senior health professionals. The participants of this study, eight senior aged care professionals, provided unique interpretative insights into family dynamics and sense-making on the journey with dementia, and their own role in that journey. Both positive and negative perspectives were sought. Data from semi-structured interviews were analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). One superordinate theme, Dementia naiveté; redefined intimacy, overarched Embarrassed

Intimate partner violence (IPV), substance use, and HIV are often co-occuring health problems affecting low-income urban women, and have been described as connected epidemics making up a "syndemic." Research suggests that each issue separately is associated with depressive symptoms, but no studies have examined the combined effect of IPV, substance use and HIV on women's depression. Interviews were conducted with 96 women recruited from community health clinics serving low-income women in an urban U.S. city. All women were over 17, not pregnant, English-speaking, without private insurance and

Whereas socialization influences in early childhood have been linked to children's emerging internalizing problems and prosocial behavior, relatively few studies have examined how NE might moderate such associations in both advantageous and maladaptive ways. Furthermore, more research is needed to evaluate the impact of sibling relationships as an influential socialization influence on these child outcomes. In the current study we examined how NE might differentially moderate the associations between quality of relationships with siblings and both internalizing problems and social skills at sc

BACKGROUND: Personal narratives are conditional for victims of sexual abuse to overcome their trauma. Counsellors can help victims with intellectual disability to take an active position in conversations about sexuality and to co-construct a personal narrative.
METHOD: Using discourse and conversational analysis, we studied 4 conversations between a counsellor and a woman with autism and mild intellectual disability.
RESULTS: In conversation with a counsellor the participant was able to express her inner emotions and understanding about sexual issues and other sensitive topics. She was able
