Age-related human neurodegenerative diseases are a major social and medical problem. It is therefore logical to take into consideration ever … eatments. It may also be considered as a model of magnesium deficit, but it does not concern simple magnesium deficiency reversible with mere oral physiological magnesium supplementation. Magnesium deficiency cannot result in neurodegenerative disease. Combined Al intoxication with Ca-Mg deficiencies is not reversible through physiological oral magnesium supplementati …

Magnesium is essential for the functioning and release of parathyroid hormone. Therefore, its deficiency can present as functional hypoparathyroidism. This case report describes a rare inherited disorder called congenital hypomagnesaemia with secondary hypocalcaemia due to TRPM6 gene mutation. This disease clinically and biochemically mimics hypoparathyroidism. However, unlike hypoparathyroidism, it can be treated only by long-term oral magnesium supplements. The patient presented to us with recurrent hypocalcaemic convulsions. The laboratory picture in each admission was similar to that of hy

The total capacity of the GS-mediated ligation of free ammonium and glutamate to form glutamine in the leaves of maize plants is not impaired upon severe magnesium starvation. Magnesium deficiency does not obligatorily lead to the decreased total protein concentrations in the leaves. Magnesium (Mg) is an integral component of the enzyme glutamine synthetase (GS), having both a structural and a catalytic role. Moreover, Mg is relevant for the post-translational regulation of the GS. Glutamine synthetase is one of the key enzymes in nitrogen assimilation, ligating-free ammonium (NH4 (+)) to glut…

Hypocalcaemia is a common metabolic abnormality in neonates, with distinct causes based on the timing of onset. Early-onset hypocalcaemia (within 72 hours of life) is typically related to transitional physiology, prematurity, perinatal asphyxia or maternal diabetes. In contrast, late-onset hypocalcaemia (after 72 hours) is less common and may result from high phosphate intake, cow's milk-based formulas, vitamin D deficiency or resistance, maternal vitamin D deficiency, hypoparathyroidism (eg, DiGeorge syndrome), magnesium deficiency or activating mutations in the calcium-sensing receptor. Clin…

The case of a patient with clinical symptoms, laboratory and imaging findings of hypoparathyroidism, sensorineural deafness, renal dysplasia HDR, or Barakat syndrome (hypoparathyroidism, deafness, renal dysplasia), and vitamin D deficiency, is presented. A Caucasian man aged 51 years with a history of chronic hypocalcaemia since childhood, was admitted with hypertonia of the body and extremities, and loss of consciousness. On admission, he was found to have severe hypocalcaemia, hyperphosphataemia, severe hypoparathyroidism, low serum magnesium and mild renal insufficiency. Calcium gluconate w

The average dietary intake of magnesium is below recommended dietary allowances in many affluent Western countries. Prolonged low magnesium … had suboptimal levels of dietary magnesium intake, which although may be sufficient to avoid overt magnesium deficiency, may not be sufficient to reduce the risk of diabetes in the elderly. Further prospective study is required to help explain the differential results between dietary and plasma magnesium levels.

Rats fed diets deficient in calcium or vitamin D for 4 weeks displayed hypocalcemia, as indicated by a 50% reduction in serum calcium and a sevenfold elevation of serum parathyroid hormone. These treatments also decreased the calcium content of brain tissue. On a regional basis, this effect was greatest in the brain stem (24% decrease) and least in striatum (10% decrease). Subcellular analysis indicated that the depletion of brain calcium was greatest in the soluble and the microsomal fractions. Infusion of calcium solutions reversed the depletion of brain calcium produced by dietary deficienc

Hypomagnesaemia was induced in ten yearling Friesian heifers by starving them for forty hours while hypermagnesaemia was induced in seven Friesian calves (about two and half months old) by intramuscular magnesium sulphate (MgSO4) injection. The plasma magnesium (PMg) concentration decreased (P less than 0.05) during starvation and increased (P less than 0.05) following MgSO4 administration. However the erythrocyte magnesium (EMg) concentration did not show any significant change either with starvation or following the MgSO4 administration. These results show that sudden and significant changes

Magnesium imbalance is clinically significant. It is common, treatable, and frequently overlooked. We review the literature describing magnesium deficit and excess syndromes and formulate specific treatment protocols.

A field experiment was undertaken in northern Ontario in order to assess the magnesium status of beef cattle raised in the area. Magnesium status was assessed using several criteria including blood and urine magnesium levels, and bone biopsy samples. Eighteen groups each containing four pregnant Shorthorn beef cows were used. Each of the following three mineral feeds were offered to six groups throughout the experiment: a mineral feed without magnesium, a mineral feed containing 8% magnesium in the form of magnesium oxide and the third containing sequestered magnesium with a magnesium level of

Balance data obtained since 1997 indicate that the Estimated Average Requirement and Recommended Dietary Allowance for magnesium should be 175 and 250 mg/d, respectively, for 70 kg healthy individuals, and increase or decrease based on body weight. Urinary excretion data from balance studies indicate that 40 to 80 mg (1.65 to 3.29 mmol) Mg/day are excreted when magnesium intakes are <250 mg/day, and 80 to 160 mg/day (3.29 to 6.58 mmol) when intakes are >250 mg/day. The change in urinary magnesium excretion with the change in dietary magnesium intake occurs within a few days. Thus, urinary magn

The aim of our investigation was to evaluate possible connection between burning mouth syndrome and hematinic deficiencies, a hypothesis previously reported in the literature with contradictory results. Serum levels of iron, vitamin B12, folic acid, calcium and magnesium were determined in 41 (aged 31-87 years, mean 68,7 yrs) patients with burning mouth syndrome and 35 matched controls (35-83, mean 63 yrs). Serum iron levels were determined according to Fairbanks and Klee. Levels of vitamin B12 and folic acid were determined on commercially available kits (Imx12 and Imx folate assay, Abbot Par

Clinical and experimental evidence indicates alcohol consumption as one of the major causes of magnesium loss from several tissues. As a res … ulated cytokine production and secretion, especially in macrophages and leukocytes, a major role of magnesium deficiency in alcohol-induced inflammatory processes can be envisioned. Considering all these various aspects together, it becomes apparent that magnesium loss may represent a predisposing factor to the onset of alcohol-induced pathologies including brain stro …
