The Impact of Antenatal and Postnatal Factors on the Development of the Pulmonary Microvasculature in Preterm Infants.

This research aimed to assess the influence of prenatal and postnatal factors on the remodeling of the pulmonary microvasculature. Methods: The investigation analyzed 67 cases of preterm infants, whose lifespans ranged from 1 day to 149 days. After selecting the cases from the autopsy database, two lung tissue microarrays were created. Histological slides were stained using the hematoxylin and eosin technique to precisely capture the microscopic details. For the assessment of pulmonary microvascularization and the media layer of the vascular walls, an immunohistochemical analysis was performed

Prevalence of Patent Foramen Ovale in Patients with Non-Obstructive Coronary Artery Disease (PROVA) Study.

(1) Background: Prevalence of patent foramen ovale (PFO) in the general population is estimated at around 24%. We hypothesized that right-to-left shunting (RLS) resulting from PFO might contribute to angina symptoms in patients with coronary artery spasm (CAS), potentially triggered by vasoactive metabolites. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of PFO-related RLS in patients with documented CAS. (2) Methods: This single-center prospective cohort study included patients with documented CAS undergoing transthoracic echocardiography (TTE), including a contrast bubbl

Retinal Microstructural and Microvascular Changes in Alzheimer Disease: A Review.

"The eyes are a window to the brain," prompting the investigation of whether retinal biomarkers can indicate Alzheimer disease (AD) and cognitive impairment. AD is a neurodegenerative condition with a lengthy preclinical phase where pathologic changes in the central nervous system (CNS) occur before clinical symptoms. Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) often precedes AD. As part of the CNS, the retina exhibits similar pathologic changes related to AD as those seen in the brains of patients with MCI. Noninvasive imaging technologies such as optical coherence tomography (OCT) and optical coherence

Photoacoustic Microscopic Imaging of Cerebral Vessels for Intensive Monitoring of Metabolic Acidosis.

PURPOSE: Metabolic acidosis as one of the most common perioperative complications has been associated with increased risks for poor prognosis. Routine monitoring methods include blood gas analysis and electrocardiogram, which are limited by time delay effects. And the existing intravital imaging modalities are difficult to achieve in one step. Here, we present a dual-wavelength photoacoustic imaging approach to overcome this dilemma. The aim of this study was to develop a rapid approach for intensive monitoring of acid-base imbalance and cerebral oxygen metabolism. PROCEDURES: We characterize

Modeling pulmonary cystic fibrosis in a human lung airway-on-a-chip.

BACKGROUND: Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disease caused by mutations in the gene encoding the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR), which results in impaired airway mucociliary clearance, inflammation, infection, and respiratory insufficiency. The development of new therapeutics for CF are limited by the lack of reliable preclinical models that recapitulate the structural, immunological, and bioelectrical features of human CF lungs. METHODS: We leveraged organ-on-a-chip technology to develop a microfluidic device lined by primary human CF bronchial epithelial cells

Toll-like receptor protein 4 monoclonal antibody inhibits mmLDL-induced endothelium-dependent vasodilation dysfunction of mouse mesenteric arteries.

Minimally modified low-density lipoprotein (mmLDL) is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. This study was designed to investigate the effect of a Toll-like receptor 4 monoclonal antibody (TLR4 mAb) on mmLDL-induced endothelium-dependent vasodilation (EDV) impairment in mouse mesenteric arteries and to explore the underlying mechanism. Animals were divided into a normal control group, an mmLDL treatment group, and a TLR4 mAb intervention group. The serum concentrations of IL-1β and TNF-α were detected using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs). EDV function was measured using a micr

Intermedin1‑53 enhances angiogenesis and attenuates adverse remodeling following myocardial infarction by activating AMP‑activated protein kinase.

Adverse ventricular remodeling is a maladaptive response to acute loss of myocardium and an important risk factor for heart failure following myocardial infarction (MI). Intermedin (IMD) is a novel member of the calcitonin/calcitonin gene‑related peptide family, which may possess potent cardioprotective properties. The aim of the present study was to determine whether IMD1‑53, a mature bioactive form of IMD, may promote therapeutic angiogenesis within the infarcted myocardium, therefore attenuating adverse ventricular remodeling post‑MI. The present study observed that treatment with IMD1‑53 p
