18F-FAZA PET imaging in tumor hypoxia: A focus on high-grade glioma.

The presence of hypoxia is a typical feature of solid tumors and has been identified in many neoplasms, favouring the survival of malignant cells in a hostile environment and the expression of an aggressive phenotype. Malignant brain tumors have large proportions of hypoxic tissue, thus contributing to resistance to radiation and chemotherapy. Positron emission tomography (PET) is an attractive technique to gain a non-invasive assessment of tumor hypoxia within the whole tumor, with 18F-fluoromisonidazole (18F-FMISO) and 18F-flouroazomycin arabinoside (18F-FAZA) being the most promising radiot

Transanal Minimally Invasive Surgery (TAMIS), First in Kuwait: A Case Report.

Transanal Minimally Invasive Surgery (TAMIS) is a one of new platform used to help and achieve better outcome in using transanal approach for the treatment of rectal neoplasm. High definition camera and high tech equipment are used to perform this kind of surgery. The main benefit of using this approach is to provide the best outcome or the patient compared to the traditional transanal approach. This platform can be used for a variety of cases, benign and malignant tumor and for the benign condition. We report the first TAMIS perfo b rmed in the Kuwait and probably in the Middle East with 2 ye

Intra-articular epithelioid sarcoma of the knee: a diagnostic challenge.

Epithelioid sarcoma is a rare mesenchymal neoplasm characterized by aggregates of epithelioid cells. Intra-articular occurrence is exceedingly rare with only few reports described in the literature. A 22 year-old man presented a progressive mechanical knee pain. Initially, the investigation revealed a non-infectious unspecific synovitis. The patient gradually presented increasing knee enlargement and functional impairment. Intra-articular nodular proliferation with bone invasion was later observed on magnetic resonance imaging reevaluation. Pigmented villonodular synovitis hypothesis was consi

Conservative approach to recurrent calcifying cystic odontogenic tumor occupying the maxillary sinus: a case report.

Calcifying cystic odontogenic tumor (CCOT) is an uncommon benign cystic neoplasm of the jaw that develops from the odontogenic epithelium. Invasion into the maxillary sinus by a CCOT is not a typical, and the recurrence of the cystic variant of CCOT in the posterior maxilla is rare. This report describes a recurrent CCOT occupying most of the maxillary sinus of a 24-year-old male patient. As a treatment, marsupialization was carried out as a means of decompression, and the involved teeth were all endodontically treated. Afterward, surgical enucleation was performed. The size of the lesion cont

Response to Anastrozole Treatment in a Case with Peutz-Jeghers Syndrome and a Large Cell Calcifying Sertoli Cell Tumor.

Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS) is inherited as an autosomal dominant trait characterized by multiple gastrointestinal hamartomatous polyps, mucocutaneous pigmentation, and an increased risk of neoplasm. Large-cell calcifying Sertoli cell tumor (LCCSCT) is a kind of sex cord-stromal tumor which may co-exist with PJS and which is characterized radiologically by calcification foci within the testes. Surgical treatment options for this tumor range from testis-preserving surgery to radical orchiectomy. Not with standing this invasive approach, recently, there are some case reports demonstrating the e

Sphenoid esthesioneuroblastoma arising from the hindmost olfactory filament.

Esthesioneuroblastoma (ENB), or olfactory neuroblastoma, is a rare malignant neoplasm arising from the olfactory neuroepithelium. Typically, ENBs are found in the olfactory cleft with extension to the ethmoid sinuses or anterior skull base. Here we report a case of ENB located in the sphenoid sinus, which had been considered as an ectopic ENB. However, endoscopic resection revealed the continuity of the tumor with the hindmost olfactory filament. The present case suggests that an ENB in the sphenoid sinus was not ectopic, but arose from the normal olfactory neuroepithelium. This continuity of

[Pancreatic metastases. Report of four cases and literature review].

The authors present the history of 4 patients with pancreatic metastases revealed by CT and MR during the last 2 years. In 2 patients pancreatic metastases developed more than 10 years after the primary renal neoplasm was diagnosed. In the other two patients (one with non small cell lung cancer and one with non-Hodgkin disease) pancreatic metastases developed shortly after the diagnosis of the primary malignancy. According to literature data metastases in the pancreas are rare. The authors conclude that the symptoms and imaging features of pancreatic metastases are variable and, therefore, non

Large calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor with extension into the maxillary sinus: a case report.

Calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor (CEOT) is a rare, locally invasive neoplasm characterized by the presence of amyloid material that can become calcified. It often is found in the posterior region of the mandible. Such tumors in the maxilla and those that invade the maxillary sinus are extremely rare. This article presents the sixth reported clinical case of a CEOT that invaded the maxillary sinus and extended to the interior of the nasal cavity. The tumor had grown toward the sinus roof, but there was no association with an impacted tooth. Histopathologically, the tumor was composed of

Chronic lymphocytic leukemia mimicking recurrent carcinoma of the breast: case report and review of the literature.

Secondary localization of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) in breast is rare, while concurrent invasive ductal carcinoma and CLL manifesting as a collision tumor in breast is extremely rare. The observation of a CLL infiltration closely associated with a distinct breast neoplasm with the absence of any other localization for the leukemia is an indisputable argument for a relationship between the two diseases. The presence of both tumors is not simply due to chance. This association (CLL and carcinoma) has also been described in other organs. Hereafter, we report a second case of an 80 year-o

Bilateral tonsillar adenoid cystic carcinoma.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma is a malignant epithelial tumor of the salivary glands. It accounts for less than 1% of all head and neck cancers and less than 10% of all salivary gland neoplasms. It shows slow and indolent growth rate, low probability of regional nodal metastases, high propensity for perineural invasion, multiple and/or delayed recurrences and high incidence of distant metastases. It is the most frequently encountered malignant tumor of the minor salivary glands. The oral cavity and the oropharynx are the most common sites followed by the parotid, submandibular gland, paranasal sinu

Peroral endoscopic removal: as a minimally invasive long-term surgical treatment of a regurgitated giant polisegmented fibrovascular polyp of the esophagus.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Giant fibrovascular polyps (FVP) are relatively rare benign neoplasm of the upper part of the esophagus. Without previous history, their diagnosis might be difficult as the endoscopic findings are sometimes misinterpreted. The present report describes a case, in which the patient regurgitated his giant polypoid mass into his mouth and captured it between his teeth and buccal surface until the emergency endoscopic removal. Although the adequate therapy for these lesions is mainly the open surgical resection, most often via cervical esophagotomy, in our case the polyp was removed successfully by

Skin adnexal neoplasm closely resembling adenomatoid tumor: a unique occurrence.

We describe a primary skin neoplasm located in the left chest wall that closely resembled adenomatoid tumor of male and female genital tract. It occurred in a 52-year-old woman who had undergone a left quadrantectomy with regional lymphadenectomy for invasive ductal carcinoma of the breast 7 years previously. The tumor involved the dermis and subcutaneous tissue and measured 0.7 cm in greatest diameter. Immunohistochemical evaluation showed strong positivity for cytokeratin pool and negativity for CD31, calretinin, WT-180, and for estrogen and progesterone receptors. We are unaware of a previo

Phaeochromocytoma treated by en bloc resection including the suprarenal caudal vena cava in a dog.

A 10-year-old, neutered male Cairn terrier was examined after experiencing intermittent vomiting of several months' duration and sudden onset of acute depression. Abdominal ultrasound examination revealed an adrenal mass invading the suprarenal part of the caudal vena cava. The vascular invasion could not be corrected so en bloc ligation/excision of the adrenal neoplasm and the suprarenal part of the vena cava was performed. Microscopic examination identified an adrenal phaeochromocytoma. The dog recovered well and had no significant vascular or renal dysfunction at follow-up 20 months after s

Oral cavity and pharynx.

Imaging of the oral cavity and pharynx often is required in three settings: assessment of an inflammatory mass in association with odontogenic, tonsillar, or pharyngeal infections; determination of the cause of a submucosal mass; and staging of squamous-cell carcinomas. Spread of infection from the oral cavity and pharynx can lead to abscesses in the masticatory space, the retropharyngeal compartment, and in a parapharyngeal location. Submucosal masses include congenital cysts (thyroglossal and dermoid), benign neoplasms (hemangioma, schwannomas, pleomorphic adenomas juvenile angiofibromas), i

Malignant rhabdoid tumour of the pineal region.

A 9-month-old male presented to hospital with signs and symptoms of raised intracranial pressure. A CT scan showed obstructive hydrocephalus from a large pineal region mass lesion into which an intratumoral hemorrhage had occurred. A posterior fossa craniectomy and subtotal excision of the mass lesion were performed. By histopathology, the lesion was a malignant rhabdoid tumour (MRT). Despite surgery and chemotherapy, the tumour grew inexorably, and the patient died four months after the initial diagnosis. MRT is a rare and highly invasive neoplasm which infrequently arises from the central ne

Vasculitis and pyrexia associated with superficial spreading gastric carcinoma.

A case of low-grade fever developing about a month before the discovery of gastric carcinoma is reported. No findings of infection or collagen disease were revealed. The fever continued for about 3 months, but promptly disappeared after surgical removal of the tumor. A superficial spreading mucosal carcinoma with minimal invasion to the submucosa was seen in the antrum, showing the features of poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma. In addition, unique venous inflammation was recognized beneath and around the neoplasm. Arteries and lymph vessels did not exhibit any inflammatory changes. It was p

Invasive pulmonary aspergillosis complicating neoplastic disease.

Invasive pulmonary aspergillosis is a necrotizing pneumonia that is most frequently seen in association with profound granulocytopenia as a consequence of cytotoxic chemotherapy that is used to treat hematologic neoplasms. There is considerable evidence that the incidence of this infection is increasing over the past decade as a result of improved medical support used in the management of "at risk" patients. Heightened clinical awareness coupled with advances in diagnostic techniques have led to earlier treatment and improved outcomes of this once uniformly fatal infection. Amphotericin B rema

Coeliac disease and malignancy.

Patients with coeliac disease are at greater risk than the general population for the development of malignant neoplasms, particularly lymphomas. Of 259 histologically confirmed malignancies in 235 patients with histologically proven coeliac disease, 133 were malignant lymphomas, the predominant histological type being malignant histiocytosis and the commonest site of this lesion the small intestine. Patients with coeliac disease also have a greatly increased risk for the development of small-intestinal adenocarcinomas. Among 116 invasive non-lymphomatous malignancies there were 19 small-intes

Cervical carcinoid ("argyrophil cell" carcinoma) associated with an endocervical adenocarcinoma: a light and ultrastructural study.

On microscopic examination of a cervical carcinoid removed from a 29-year-old woman, foci of endocervical adenocarcinoma in situ (AIS) and severe squamous dysplasia were present immediately adjacent to the invasive carcinoid tumor. Cells of the carcinoid tumor contained abundant intracytoplasmic argyrophilic granules and numerous neurosecretory granules (NSG) on ultrastructural study. Neoplastic cells of the endocervical AIS were devoid of argyrophilic granules and contained no NSGs. The present neoplastic process appeared similar to cases of a "mixed" type neoplasm composed of a carcinoid tum

Carcinoid tumor of the thymus: a clinicopathologic report of seven cases with a review of the literature.

Carcinoid tumor of the thymus is a rare neoplasm. Formerly confused with thymoma, a tumor of thymic epithelial cells, carcinoid tumor of the thymus has recently been shown to arise from cells of neuroendocrine origin that are normally present in the thymus. About half of the tumors are either functionally active (usually producing Cushing's syndrome) or are found in association with other endocrine tumors, as part of a multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome. The remainder occur as symptomatic or asymptomatic anterior mediastinal masses, clinically indistinguishable from thymoma. At least 30% of
