An AI-Aided Diagnostic Framework for Hematologic Neoplasms Based on Morphologic Features and Medical Expertise.

A morphologic examination is essential for the diagnosis of hematological diseases. However, its conventional manual operation is time-consuming and laborious. Herein, we attempt to establish an artificial intelligence (AI)-aided diagnostic framework integrating medical expertise. This framework acts as a virtual hematological morphologist (VHM) for diagnosing hematological neoplasms. Two datasets were established as follows: An image dataset was used to train the Faster Region-based Convolutional Neural Network to develop an image-based morphologic feature extraction model. A case dataset con

EEG-Based Parkinson's Disease Recognition via Attention-Based Sparse Graph Convolutional Neural Network.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a complicated neurological ailment that affects both the physical and mental wellness of elderly individuals which makes it problematic to diagnose in its initial stages. Electroencephalogram (EEG) promises to be an efficient and cost-effective method for promptly detecting cognitive impairment in PD. Nevertheless, prevailing diagnostic practices utilizing EEG features have failed to examine the functional connectivity among EEG channels and the response of associated brain areas causing an unsatisfactory level of precision. Here, we construct an attention-based spa

Shortening image registration time using a deep neural network for patient positional verification in radiotherapy.

We sought to accelerate 2D/3D image registration computation time using image synthesis with a deep neural network (DNN) to generate digitally reconstructed radiographic (DRR) images from X-ray flat panel detector (FPD) images. And we explored the feasibility of using our DNN in the patient setup verification application. Images of the prostate and of the head and neck (H&N) regions were acquired by two oblique X-ray fluoroscopic units and the treatment planning CT. DNN was designed to generate DRR images from the FPD image data. We evaluated the quality of the synthesized DRR images to compar

Sleep Signal Analysis for Early Detection of Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementia (ADRD).

OBJECTIVE: Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementia (ADRD) is growing at alarming rates, putting research and development of diagnostic methods at the forefront of the biomedical research community. Sleep disorder has been proposed as an early sign of Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) in Alzheimer's disease. Although several clinical studies have been conducted to assess sleep and association with early MCI, reliable and efficient algorithms to detect MCI in home-based sleep studies are needed in order to address both healthcare costs and patient discomfort in hospital/lab-based sleep studies.

Accurate Real-Time Joint Torque Estimation for Dynamic Prediction of Human Locomotion.

Inverse dynamics is a common tool for determining human joint torques during walking. The traditional approaches rely on ground reaction force and kinematics measurements prior to analysis. A novel real-time hybrid method is proposed in this work by integrating a neural network and dynamic model that only requires kinematic data. An end-to-end neural network for direct joint torque estimation is also developed based on kinematic data. The neural networks are trained on a variety of walking conditions, including starting and stopping, sudden speed changes, and asymmetrical walking. The hybrid m

Adaptive convolutional dictionary learning for denoising seismocardiogram to enhance the classification performance of aortic stenosis.

BACKGROUND: Aortic stenosis (AS) is the most prevalent type of valvular heart disease (VHD), traditionally diagnosed using echocardiogram or phonocardiogram. Seismocardiogram (SCG), an emerging wearable cardiac monitoring modality, is proved to be feasible in non-invasive and cost-effective AS diagnosis. However, SCG waveforms acquired from patients with heart diseases are typically weak, making them more susceptible to noise contamination. While most related researches focus on motion artifacts, sensor noise and quantization noise have been mostly overlooked. These noises pose additional chal

Compatible-domain Transfer Learning for Breast Cancer Classification with Limited Annotated Data.

Microscopic analysis of breast cancer images is the primary task in diagnosing cancer malignancy. Recent attempts to automate this task have employed deep learning models whose success has depended on large volumes of data, while acquiring annotated data in biomedical domains is time-consuming and may not always be feasible. A typical strategy to address this is to apply transfer learning using pre-trained models on a large natural image database (e.g., ImageNet) instead of training a model from scratch. This approach, however, has not been effective in several previous studies due to fundamen

ECG Identification Based on the Gramian Angular Field and Tested with Individuals in Resting and Activity States.

In the last decade, biosignals have attracted the attention of many researchers when designing novel biometrics systems. Many of these works use cardiac signals and their representation as electrocardiograms (ECGs). Nowadays, these solutions are even more realistic since we can acquire reliable ECG records by using wearable devices. This paper moves in that direction and proposes a novel approach for an ECG identification system. For that, we transform the ECG recordings into Gramian Angular Field (GAF) images, a time series encoding technique well-known in other domains but not very common wi
