In primates, visual long-term memory of objects is presumably stored in the inferior temporal (IT) cortex. Because brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is involved in activity-dependent neural reorganization, we tested the hypothesis that BDNF would be upregulated in IT cortex during formation of visual pair-association memory. To eliminate genetic and cognitive variations between individual animals, we used split-brain monkeys for intra-animal comparison in PCR-based mRNA quantitation. The monkeys learned a pair-association (PA) task using one hemisphere and a control visual task using th

The eye movement behaviour of a patient suffering from a right basal ganglia infarction with left-sided neglect but without any visual field defects was investigated during the ocular exploration of simple line drawings. The eye movements were registered by means of an i.r. light technique. Each line drawing consisted of different figural elements located in the centre and both the left and the right half of the picture. In each case, only the contextual connection of the left and right elements in a drawing allowed the spectator to describe the whole scene consistently and to perceive the cor

The evaluation of visual potentials (VEP) evoked by pattern reversal includes the latency and amplitude of P100. An increase in the mean brightness or contrast of the checkerboard stimulus results in an increase in amplitude and a decrease in latency of P100. A square edge subtense of 20' in checkerboard pattern or a spatial frequency of 3-4 cyc/degrees in stripe pattern produce maximum responses. Transient VEPs are recorded at low repetition rates (less than 2 Hz), steady state VEPs at temporal frequencies above 8 Hz. In the latter condition the VEP takes the character of a sinusoidal train o

The theory of 'weak central coherence' [Happe, F., & Frith, U. (2006). The weak coherence account: Detail-focused cognitive style in autism spectrum disorders. Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, 36(1), 5-25] implies that persons with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) have a perceptual bias for local but not for global stimulus features. The recognition of emotional facial expressions representing various different levels of detail has not been studied previously in ASDs. We analyzed the recognition of four basic emotional facial expressions (anger, disgust, fear and happiness) from

What is the relationship between retinotopy and object selectivity in human lateral occipital (LO) cortex? We used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to examine sensitivity to retinal position and category in LO, an object-selective region positioned posterior to MT along the lateral cortical surface. Six subjects participated in phase-encoded retinotopic mapping experiments as well as block-design experiments in which objects from six different categories were presented at six distinct positions in the visual field. We found substantial position modulation in LO using standard nonob

In order to investigate the functional specificity of the dorsal and ventral visual processing steams we used transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to briefly disrupt one or the other while subjects performed three tasks, involving discrimination of colour or shape or relative position. TMS was delivered over right posterior parietal cortex (PPC) or right lateral occipital (LO) cortex, regions known to have visuo-spatial and object processing properties respectively. LO but not PPC stimulation had a significant effect on reaction time when subjects were asked to make a discrimination of rela

Despite considerable interest in enhancing, preserving, and rehabilitating working memory (WM), efforts to elicit sustained behavioral improvements have been met with limited success. Here, we paired WM training with transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) to the frontoparietal network over four days. Active tDCS enhanced WM performance by modulating interactions between frontoparietal theta oscillations and gamma activity, as measured by pre- and post-training high-density electroencephalography (EEG). Increased phase-amplitude coupling (PAC) between the prefrontal stimulation site and

The theory of material specific lateralization of memory function posits that left and right MTL regions are asymmetrically involved in mnemonic processing of verbal and nonverbal material respectively. Lesion and functional imaging (fMRI) studies provide robust evidence for a left MTL asymmetry in the verbal memory domain. Evidence for a right MTL/nonverbal asymmetry is not as robust. A handful of fMRI studies have investigated this issue but have generally utilised nonverbal stimuli which are amenable to semantic elaboration. This fMRI study aimed to investigate the neural correlates of reco

We tested the effects of variation of stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA) on visual working memory (WM) performance across different load levels and the underlying brain activation patterns using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in 48 healthy participants. Participants were instructed to memorise arrays of coloured squares and had to perform a match/non-match judgement on a probe stimulus after a jittered delay. We presented visual pattern masks at four SOAs after the offset of the memory array (100 ms, 200 ms, 400 ms, and 800 ms). Memory performance decreased with increased load and s

Compared to healthy individuals, schizophrenic patients suffer from sensorimotor disorders including problems when tracking moving targets and perceiving biological motion. Recent advances in embodied cognition and social coordination dynamics have emphasized the important role played by bodily information exchange (e.g. facial expressions, posture, and movements) in the way people interact with and mutually influence each other. These experimental studies on healthy participants provide data on sensorimotor performances of a patient that are recorded at high temporal and spatial resolutions.

OBJECTIVE: To understand disorder-unique and common pathophysiology, studies in multiple patient groups with overlapping symptoms are needed. Deficits in emotion processing and hyperarousal symptoms are prominent features of bipolar disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and severe mood dysregulation. The authors compared amygdala response during emotional and nonemotional ratings of neutral faces in youths with these disorders as well as a group of healthy comparison youths.
METHOD: Blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) signal in the amygdala was examined in children with b

Everyday contextual settings create associations that later afford generating predictions about what objects to expect in our environment. The cortical network that takes advantage of such contextual information is proposed to connect the representation of associated objects such that seeing one object (bed) will activate the visual representations of other objects sharing the same context (pillow). Given this proposal, we hypothesized that the cortical activity elicited by seeing a strong contextual object would predict the occurrence of false memories whereby one erroneously "remembers" havi

Recognition can be guided by familiarity, a restricted form of retrieval devoid of contextual recall, or by recollection, which occurs when retrieval is sufficient to support the full experience of remembering an episode. Recollection and familiarity were disentangled by testing recognition memory using silhouette object drawings, high target-foil resemblance, and both yes-no and forced-choice procedures. Theoretically, forced-choice recognition could be mediated by familiarity alone. Alzheimer's disease and its preclinical stage, mild cognitive impairment (MCI), were associated with memory im

The regional impact of amyloid-β (Aβ) load and neuroinflammation on brain integrity and function is essential to understand the pathophysiology of Alzheimer's disease (AD), yet it is still lacking in the current literature, particularly in regions involved in visual object recognition. Here, using a multimodal approach, we investigated AD-related neuropathological changes and their impact on task-related responses in core visual object recognition areas of the ventral stream: FFA, FBA, LOCv, PPA and VWFA. We combined 11C-PK11195 PET measures of neuroinflammation, 11C-PIB PET measures of Aβ loa

Both emotion and visual processing deficits are documented in schizophrenia, and preferential magnocellular visual pathway dysfunction has been reported in several studies. This study examined the contribution to emotion-processing deficits of magnocellular and parvocellular visual pathway function, based on stimulus properties and shape of contrast response functions. Experiment 1 examined the relationship between contrast sensitivity to magnocellular- and parvocellular-biased stimuli and emotion recognition using the Penn Emotion Recognition (ER-40) and Emotion Differentiation (EMODIFF) test

This paper reports the first ever detailed study about eye movement patterns during single object recognition in visual agnosia. Eye movements were recorded in a patient with an integrative agnosic deficit during two recognition tasks: common object naming and novel object recognition memory. The patient showed normal directional biases in saccades and fixation dwell times in both tasks and was as likely as controls to fixate within object bounding contour regardless of recognition accuracy. In contrast, following initial saccades of similar amplitude to controls, the patient showed a bias for

Despite the fact that bilateral mirror symmetry is an important characteristic of the visual world, few studies have investigated its neural basis. Here we addressed this issue by investigating whether the object-selective lateral occipital (LO) cortex, a key brain region in object and shape processing, is causally involved in bilateral symmetry detection. Participants were asked to discriminate between symmetric and asymmetric dot patterns, while fMRI-guided repetitive TMS was delivered online over either the left LO, the right LO or two control sites in the occipital cortex. We found that th

PURPOSE: To investigate whether children with epilepsy primarily affecting the occipital cortex exhibit impairment of visual object identification and to what extent such a hypothesized dysfunction is related to an interfering functional, rather than structural, process.
METHOD: We studied nine children with idiopathic childhood occipital epilepsy (ICOE) and compared them to eight children with lesional posterior cortex epilepsy (PCEs) and to 60 age-matched controls. We applied an "ascendent" paradigm of object identification, using a coarse-to-fine order procedure, which gradually integrated

BACKGROUND: Spatial analysis may be subdivided into between-object and within-object spatial coding. We investigated the contribution of various visual cues to grouping processes that might determine whether single or multiple objects were perceived and therefore which type of spatial coding would be used for a stimulus.
METHODS: We asked three patients to make shape judgments with a series of displays showing triangular arrangements, moving from more implicit triangles defined by separate objects at the apices (between-object spatial coding) to more explicit triangles with line edges or surf

We investigated cue and target-related laterality effects with event-related fMRI. Both left and right occipital areas responded maximally when both cue and target were presented in the contralateral visual hemifield (VF), and minimally when cue and target were presented in the ipsilateral VF. However, whereas signal increases in right ventromedial and lateral occipital cortex were intermediate in those trials in which the cue appeared in the VF contralateral to the target (invalid cue trials), signal strength in left occipital cortex was almost identical for valid and invalid cues, i.e., high
