INTRODUCTION: Autoimmune liver diseases (ALDs) are chronic conditions generated by an immune-mediated autoaggressive inflammatory reaction in genetically susceptible individuals. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of apical periodontitis (AP) in patients suffering from ALDs undergoing treatment with the immune suppressants glucocorticoids, azathioprine, and/or ursodeoxycholic acid.
METHODS: The ALD group included 46 patients (11 men and 35 women, average age = 57.9 ± 11.8 years) and 1186 teeth. The control group included 50 healthy patients not taking any medications (15

An oroantral communication may form in the upper molar region after tooth extraction. The patient is a 59-year-old female, who is a nonsmoker. At the initial visit, teeth #14, #15, and #17 were missing. After tooth #16 was extracted due to apical periodontitis, a bone defect with a diameter of approximately 4 mm was observed, leading to the formation of an oroantral fistula (OAF). Another window was created in the lateral wall adjacent to the superior part of the bone defect at the fistula site to achieve closure of the OAF through bone formation and simultaneously perform sinus floor elevatio

BACKGROUND: The incidence of pyogenic spondylodiscitis is increasing; however, the source of infection often remains obscure. We analyzed predisposing factors, pathogens, and outcome of patients undergoing surgical and/or conservative treatment of spondylodiscitis with a focus on the diagnostic work-up including a comprehensive maxillofacial assessment.
PATIENTS: The analysis of prognostic factors comprised comorbidities, nicotine dependence, symptom duration, and oral cavity peculiarities. After a standardized diagnostic work-up, a detailed examination of the oral cavity was also performed.

Pustulosis palmaris et plantaris (PPP) is a chronic relapsing skin disease characterized by sterile intraepidermal pustules and, usually, by scaly erythematous skin on the palm, soles, or both. To determine the primary pathogenic factors involved in the onset of PPP, we analyzed the implications of heat shock proteins (HSPs), which are highly conserved immunogenic proteins, chronic microbial infections including marginal and periapical periodontitis, and delayed type hypersensitivity (DTH) against dental metals examined by patch tests. We found that the titers of IgG against HSPs of Escherichi…

The present study evaluated the effects of combined guided tissue regeneration (GTR) and demineralized freeze-dried bone allograft (DFDBA) therapy on the healing of grade III furcation lesions in mandibular molars of seven periodontitis patients. De novo surgical debridement of furcation roofs by fine diamond bur was introduced. Routine presurgical preparation of teeth and a strict plaque control program were performed for at least six weeks before surgery. A papillary conserved full thickness mucoperiosteal flap was used in all cases. In addition to conventional debridement, odontoplasty was

BACKGROUND: Impacted teeth usually remain symptom-free, but cause various symptoms and pathologies due to pain, swelling, bone loss, distal caries, periodontitis, infections, occlusion disturbances, pericoronitis, root resorption of adjacent teeth, periapical infections, cysts and tumors. Associated complications to the surgical removal of IMTM can be divided into intra-operative and postoperative. Am of this study is to assess the predictive value of preoperative radiological assessment of mandibular third molar impactions in relation to the inferior alveolar canal and postoperative complicat

OBJECTIVE: The inflammatory microenvironment in pulpitis and periapical periodontitis critically impairs dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) functionality, yet the underlying molecular mechanisms remain poorly defined. This study aimed to investigate the effects of Porphyromonas gingivalis lipopolysaccharide (P. gingivalis LPS) on human DPSCs behavior and elucidate the transcriptomic changes underlying LPS-induced inflammation.
DESIGN: Human DPSCs were exposed to 1 µg/mL LPS for 24 hours to establish an inflammatory model, with subsequent evaluation of proliferation (CCK-8), migration (Transwell),…

BACKGROUND: In general, mandibular canines have a single root and a single canal. The occurrence of two roots and two canals is a rare entity ranging from 1 to 5%. The anatomy of root canal morphology plays a decisive role in determining the conditions under which endodontic treatment can be performed effectively. Successful endodontic treatment comprises proper diagnosis, meticulous cleaning and shaping followed by three dimensional obturation. Failure to do so may lead to postoperative diseases, pain and further complications. This paper reports successful management of a mandibular canine w

INTRODUCTION: Images and clinical characteristics of some lesions may lead to misinterpretations between diseases of endodontic and non-endodontic origin. Non-Hodgkin lymphomas occur in extranodal sites and may arise primarily in the oral cavity or jaws.
METHODS: A case of lymphoma associated with the roots of teeth #21-23 in a 38-year-old woman is described. The patient sought dental care because of continuous discomfort at palpation of the periapical area of teeth #21-23, which had been treated endodontically. Radiographic and clinical exams revealed no inflammatory signs. The patient repor

BACKGROUND: Alveolar ridge deficiencies following trauma, tooth loss, or endodontic pathology may compromise implant placement in the anterior maxilla. While autogenous bone grafting remains the benchmark, a growth factor bioavailability-enhanced allograft (GFBA) has been developed as an alternative.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 44-year-old man presented for implant rehabilitation in the anterior maxilla. Tooth No. 8 was missing due to trauma that occurred approximately 20 years prior. Cone-beam computed tomography findings for site No. 8 showed an atrophic alveolar ridge with intact cortical plates
