The ankle joints of 14 healthy volunteers and 16 patients with unstable ankle joints were tested for their functional and proprioceptive capabilities. All of them were active athletes. Three tests were used: the single-leg stance test, the single-leg jumping course test, and the angle-reproduction test. The influence of three stabilization devices--the lace-on brace (Mikros), the stirrup brace (Aircast), and taping--on the proprioceptivity of stable and unstable ankle joints was evaluated. The scores of the single-leg jumping course test without any stabilizing device ("standard" category) ran

By the neurological, electromyographic, anatomopathological and bacterioscopic examinations of 100 pacients with leprosy the following conclusions have been drawn: There was a high incidence of reflex abnormalities. The proprioceptive reflexes were abnormal in 64.5% and the superficial reflexes in 70.8% of the cases. According to the topography of the segments examined, the deep reflexes showed the following abnormal values: 25.3% in the cephalic segment; 69.1% in the upper limbs and 74.5% in the lower limbs. Of the 2,289 reflexes investigated, abnormalities were found in 773 superficial refle

The periodontal tissue is made up of supporting tissues and among its functions, it promotes viscoelastic properties, proprioceptive sensors, and dental anchorage. Its progressive destruction by disease leads to the loss of bone and periodontal ligaments. For this reason, biomaterials are constantly being developed to restore tissue function. Various techniques are being used to promote regenerative dentistry, including 3D bioprinting with bioink formulations. This paper aims to review the different types of bioink formulations and 3D bioprinting techniques used in periodontal tissue regenerat

A 9-month-old male Bullmastiff cross dog was presented with a history of progressive proprioceptive ataxia and behavior changes. Neuroanatomical localization was multifocal with forebrain and vestibulo-cerebellum involvement. MRI identified moderate diffuse cerebral sulci widening, dilation of the ventricular system, and rounded, well-defined, bilaterally symmetrical T2W, FLAIR, and T2* hyperintense intra-axial lesions affecting the olivary nuclei. Histopathological examination was indicative of a primary mitochondrial disorder. This was confirmed following genetic analysis which identified mi

Enlargement of the sternoclavicular joint is a well-documented but little recognised complication of radical neck dissection [AJR 3 (1971) 584]. We examined the stability of the sternoclavicular joint in 61 patients who had had radical neck dissection, functional neck dissection or sternomastoid division in the treatment of torticollis. Our findings support the hypothesis that postoperative stability of the sternoclavicular joint depends on the integrity of the accessory nerve and probably the proprioceptive branches of C3 and C4 of the cervical plexus. We conclude that in patients who require

A captive king cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) was evaluated for a subacute onset of ataxia in all four limbs. The ataxia appeared to be spinal in origin, evidenced by apparent conscious proprioceptive deficits in all limbs, and there was no evidence of cerebellar involvement. Anesthesia was performed and survey spinal radiographs were normal. Cerebrospinal fluid analysis revealed an apparently sterile meningitis of unknown etiology. Although transient improvement was noted with glucocorticoid and antimicrobial therapy, the condition deteriorated subsequently and the animal became quadriparetic and

The application of two kinds of ventilatory interoceptive influences with opposite effects on the acid-base balance (hyperventilation and breath holding) results in appearance of late nonspecific after-effects in human EEG, which do not disappear until the 30th min after the stimulation. They consist in local and spatial synchronizing processes in the alpha and beta EEG spectrum, being most pronounced in the beta-2 range (23-36 Hz). These changes are considered as a sign of a development of readjustment in the functional state of the central nervous system in the direction of its improvement.

In reaction time (RT) experiments, shifts of arousal level induced by postural changes were examined in 10 normal subjects and 10 patients with SMON. Vocal RTs were recorded at neutral position (N) and facilitating position of the left arm (FA) or the left leg (FL). RT-ratios between two positions, FA/N and FL/N, were used as variables to estimate the arousing effect of facilitating positions. Also the correlations between these variables and several clinical signs such as patellar tendon reflex (PTR), sensory disturbance and dysesthesia were calculated. The grade of dysesthesia was strongly r

The anatomic, neurologic, and physiologic characteristics of the middle ear structures have created confusion concerning the nature of the intraaural muscle reflex. After reviewing the relevant literature, we correlated this information with our studies of human temporal bones and computer analyses of the acoustic reflex responses of individuals with normal hearing. Our hypothesis is that although the stapedius is the initiator of the reflex and the primary contributor to ossicular chain fixation, the tensor tympani is responsible for the major observed response. The negative deflection presen

Self-motion perception relies on the central integration of vestibular, visual and proprioceptive sensory inputs into a coherent percept of self-motion. To better understand the central integration of linear and rotational stimuli, we examined rotational and translational movements in the horizontal plane in healthy subjects (HS) and in patients with unilateral vestibular hypofunction (pwUVH). We established a novel heading discrimination paradigm using a motion platform to examine heading direction perception for translational movements with additional yaw rotations of - 1°, 0°, or 1°. We exa

To configure our limbs in space, the brain must compute their position based on sensory information provided by mechanoreceptors in the skin, muscles, and joints. Because this information is corrupted by noise, the brain is thought to process it probabilistically and integrate it with prior belief about arm posture, following Bayes' rule. Here, we combined computational modeling with behavioral experimentation to test this hypothesis. The model conceives the perception of arm posture as the combination of a probabilistic kinematic chain composed by the shoulder, elbow, and wrist angles, compro

Body ownership and the sense of agency are two central aspects of bodily self-consciousness. While multiple neuroimaging studies have investigated the neural correlates of body ownership and agency separately, few studies have investigated the relationship between these two aspects during voluntary movement when such experiences naturally combine. By eliciting the moving rubber hand illusion with active or passive finger movements during functional magnetic resonance imaging, we isolated activations reflecting the sense of body ownership and agency, respectively, as well as their interaction,

Post-stroke 'pushing' behaviour appears to be caused by impaired perception of vertical in the roll plane. While pushing behaviour typically resolves with stroke recovery, it is not known if misperception of vertical persists. The purpose of this study was to determine if perception of vertical is impaired amongst stroke survivors with a history of pushing behaviour. Fourteen individuals with chronic stroke (7 with history of pushing) and 10 age-matched healthy controls participated. Participants sat upright on a chair surrounded by a curved projection screen in a laboratory mounted on a motio

In the last decade, increasing attention has been devoted to the extra-articular and extra-cutaneous manifestations of joint hypermobility syndrome, also termed Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, hypermobility type (i.e., JHS/EDS-HT). Despite the fact that the current diagnostic criteria for both disorders remain focused on joint hypermobility, musculoskeletal pain and skin changes, medical practice and research have started investigating a wide spectrum of visceral, neurological and developmental complications, which represent major burdens for affected individuals. In particular, children with generali

The origin of the internal "sensory conflict" stimulus causing motion sickness has been debated for more than four decades. Recent studies show a subclass of neurons in the vestibular nuclei and deep cerebellar nuclei that respond preferentially to passive head movements. During active movement, the semicircular canal and otolith input ("reafference") to these neurons are canceled by a mechanism comparing the expected consequences of self-generated movement (estimated with an internal model-presumably located in the cerebellum) with the actual sensory feedback. The un-canceled component ("exaf

Recent research on bodily self-consciousness has assumed that it consists of three distinct components: the experience of owning a body (body ownership); the experience of being a body with a given location within the environment (self-location); and the experience of taking a first-person, body-centered, perspective on that environment (perspective). Here we review recent neuroimaging studies suggesting that at least two of these components-body ownership and self-location-are implemented in rather distinct neural substrates, located, respectively, in the premotor cortex and in the temporo-pa

Does skill with a difficult task, such as tightrope walking, lead to improved balance through altered movement strategies or through altered weighting of sensory inputs? We approached this question by comparing tandem stance (TS) data between seven tightrope walkers and 12 untrained control subjects collected under different sensory conditions. All subjects performed four TS tasks with eyes open or closed, on a normal firm or foam surface (EON, ECN, EOF, ECF); tightrope walkers were also tested on a tightrope (EOR). Head, upper trunk and pelvis angular velocities were measured with gyroscopes
