The acoustic reflex is considered to reduce transmission across the middle ear and thereby protect the inner ear from intense sounds. The dynamic properties of this reflex seem to be a function of the duration of the eliciting stimulus. Assessment of the protective action afforded by middle-ear muscle contractions for long-term noise exposures requires the knowledge of how these dynamic properties change under such conditions. The clinical value and practical application of the electrically induced BC reflex was investigated in 40 patients with traumatic or compressive lesions of the conus medullaris or cauda equina. With preactivation, the threshold of stapedial reflex activity can be lowered by 20-30 dB. From these measures of the normal and reduced reflex threshold, an extrapolation may be performed down to the hearing threshold. Thus, the hearing threshold can be determined for every single frequency from 0.125 to 4 kHz if the reflex is elicitable up to 8 kHz.

In 62 normals and 70 patients with reflex vertebrogenic syndromes the authors studied tissue clearance (the time of resorbtion--50% and 80% isotope, the mean rate of elimination in percentage) by radioisotope indications. In 15 normal-hearing persons a number of stapedius reflex responses 10 dB above individual reflex threshold has been measured and recorded. In an experimental condition the same stimulus tone has been used and the responses recorded.
