Social interaction and social withdrawal in rodents as readouts for investigating the negative symptoms of schizophrenia.

Negative symptoms (e.g., asociality and anhedonia) are a distinct symptomatic domain that has been found to significantly affect the quality of life in patients diagnosed with schizophrenia. Additionally, the primary negative symptom of asociality (i.e., withdrawal from social contact that derives from indifference or lack of desire to have social contact) is a major contributor to poor psychosocial functioning and has been found to play an important role in the course of the disorder. Nonetheless, the pathophysiology underlying these symptoms is unknown and currently available treatment optio

Behavioral effects of developmental methylmercury drinking water exposure in rodents.

Early methylmercury (MeHg) exposure can have long-lasting consequences likely arising from impaired developmental processes, the outcome of which has been exposed in several longitudinal studies of affected populations. Given the large number of newborns at an increased risk of learning disabilities associated with in utero MeHg exposure, it is important to study neurobehavioral alterations using ecologically valid and physiologically relevant models. This review highlights the benefits of using the MeHg drinking water exposure paradigm and outlines behavioral outcomes arising from this proced

Natural history of Bartonella-infecting rodents in light of new knowledge on genomics, diversity and evolution.

Among the 33 confirmed Bartonella species to date, more than half are hosted by rodent species, and at least five of them have been involved in human illness causing diverse symptoms including fever, myocarditis, endocarditis, lymphadenitis and hepatitis. In almost all countries, wild rodents are infected by extremely diverse Bartonella strains with a high prevalence. In the present paper, in light of new knowledge on rodent-adapted Bartonella species genomics, we bring together knowledge gained in recent years to have an overview of the impact of rodent-adapted Bartonella infection on humans

Rodent models of polycystic ovary syndrome.

Rodents are clearly valuable models for assessing disruption of fertility. The effects of different steroid treatments at different stages of reproductive life through from fetal to adult have been assessed for effects on fertility, ovarian morphology, hypothalamic-pituitary function or metabolic consequences. The results show that steroid treatments do disrupt fertility in many cases, but the underlying mechanisms are complicated by the effects of the different treatments at multiple sites. As models for PCOS at the ovarian level however, there are a number of problems particularly related to

[Description of Nosopsyllus (N.) atsbi n. sp. (Siphonaptera: Ceratophyllidae) from Ethiopia, and revision of the related species N. (N.) incisus (Jordan & Rothschild, 1913); biogeographical discussion].

We describe a new Nosopsyllus s. sto., N. atsbi, from the north of Ethiopia, that shows phyletic similarities with N. incisus (Jordan & Rothschild, 1913), a species from the oriental part of the afrotropical region. This led us to reconsider the classification of the incisus populations based on the unique criteria of telomere's setation (three robust marginal bristles, instead of the two typically present in members of this genus and subgenus). It appears that N. incisus s. sto. occurs in north-eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Burundi and Tanzania. In the north and south of th

Temporal dynamics and impact of climate factors on the incidence of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis in central Tunisia.

BACKGROUND: Old world Zoonotic Cutaneous Leishmaniasis (ZCL) is a vector-borne human disease caused by Leishmania major, a unicellular eukaryotic parasite transmitted by pool blood-feeding sand flies mainly to wild rodents, such as Psammomys obesus. The human beings who share the rodent and sand fly habitats can be subverted as both sand fly blood resource. ZCL is endemic in the Middle East, Central Asia, Subsaharan and North Africa. Like other vector-borne diseases, the incidence of ZCL displayed by humans varies with environmental and climate factors. However, so far no study has addressed t

Establishment of a health surveillance program for reintroduction of the Eurasian beaver (Castor fiber) into Scotland.

In 2009 and 2010 16 Norwegian Eurasian beavers (Castor fiber) were reintroduced to Knapdale, Scotland as part of a 5-yr reintroduction trial (Scottish Beaver Trial). Despite numerous reintroduction programs throughout Europe there is no published information concerning recommended health surveillance during beaver reintroduction and only one publication describing causes of mortality. We describe the establishment of a health surveillance program based on International Union of Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and governmental guidelines, and report preliminary results based on the fecal and bloo

The occurrence of the larval cestode Cysticercus fasciolaris in rodent populations from the Cuxtal ecological reserve, Yucatan, Mexico.

Cysticercus fasciolaris is the larval stage of the cestode Taenia taeniaeformis, whose definitive hosts are mainly cats. This larval stage uses a wide variety of small rodents, and occasionally birds and humans, as intermediate hosts. In the Yucatan, there are no reports of the presence of this cestode in animal populations. The aim of this study was to evaluate the occurrence of C. fasciolaris in rodent populations from the Cuxtal ecological reserve, Yucatan, Mexico. Trapping of rodents was conducted from October 2009 to April 2010 in 40 households in Molas, in which Sherman traps were placed

[Blood feeding preference of Lutzomyia whitmani (Diptera, Psychodidae) in a transmission area for American cutaneous leishmaniasis in the State of Maranhão, Brazil].

The aim of this study was to determine the sources of blood meals for females of Lutzomyia whitmani, a phlebotomine species incriminated as the main vector for American cutaneous leishmaniasis in Maranhão. For this, 70 Lutzomyia whitmani females were collected in the municipality of Axixá, an area with one of the greatest numbers of cases of American cutaneous leishmaniasis in humans in Maranhão. They were analyzed using the precipitin technique. Ninety percent of the specimens showed a reaction to some type of antiserum positive immune reaction, among which 73% presented single reactions, wit

Animal reservoirs for visceral leishmaniasis in densely populated urban areas.

Leishmaniasis is a zoonotic disease of major public health and veterinary importance, affecting 88 countries with up to 2 million cases per year. This review emphasizes the animal reservoirs and spreading of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) in urban areas, particularly in two Brazilian metropolitan areas, namely São Luis and Belo Horizonte, where the disease has become endemic in the past few years. Urbanization of visceral leishmaniasis in Brazil during the last decades has created favorable epidemiological conditions for maintenance of the disease, with dense human populations sharing a tropical

Human plague in the southwestern United States, 1957-2004: spatial models of elevated risk of human exposure to Yersinia pestis.

Plague is a rare but highly virulent flea-borne zoonotic disease caused by the Gram-negative bacterium Yersinia pestis Yersin. Identifying areas at high risk of human exposure to the etiological agent of plague could provide a useful tool for targeting limited public health resources and reduce the likelihood of misdiagnosis by raising awareness of the disease. We created logistic regression models to identify landscape features associated with areas where humans have acquired plague from 1957 to 2004 in the four-corners region of the United States (Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah), an

The diversity of rabies virus in Russia demonstrated by anti-nucleocapsid monoclonal antibody application and limited gene sequencing.

A comparative analysis of anti-nucleocapsid monoclonal antibody (N-mAb) reaction profiles and DNA sequences was performed on 97 selected rabies virus (RABV) isolates from Russia and neighbouring states. A panel of 73 N-mAb from the Wistar Institute (Philadelphia, PA, USA), Veterinary Laboratories Agency (Weybridge, UK) and P-41 (Tübingen, Germany) was used. The sequence of a 400 bp fragment of the N gene was generated for all available isolates and a phylogenetic analysis of the fragment was carried out. The results of genetic and antigenic typing were in concordance, except for a few deviatio

Ecologically based management of rodents in the real world: applied to a mixed agroecosystem in Vietnam.

Rodents cause significant damage to lowland irrigated rice crops in the Red River Delta of Vietnam. A four-year study was conducted in 1999-2002 to examine the effectiveness of applying rodent control practices using the principles of ecologically based pest management. Four 100-150 ha study sites adjacent to villages were selected and farmers on two treated sites were asked to follow a set of rodent management practices, while farmers on the untreated sites were asked not to change their typical practices. Farmers on the treated sites were encouraged to use trap-barrier systems (TBS's; 0.065-

[Ecological regularities of the existence of pathogenic Yersinia in soil ecosystems].

In this review the data on the ecology of pathogenic Yersinia in soil ecosystems, based on prolonged observations, were analyzed and summarized. In contrast to saprophytic species, ubiquitously spread in nature, pathogenic representatives of the genus Yersinia occurred only in the soil of natural foci and of these, Y. pestis were found only in the soil of burrows of the main carriers. The complex of abiotic and biotic factors (temperature, humidity, chemical composition, interactions in biocenosis) which determined the possibility of the existence of Yersinia in the soil environment and the pr

Fasciola hepatica: the growth and larval productivity of redial generations in Galba truncatula subjected to miracidia differing in their mammalian origin.

Experimental infections of Galba truncatula with 4 isolates of Fasciola hepatica miracidia differing by their mammalian origin (cattle, nutrias, rabbits, or sheep) were carried out to determine if parasite origin had an effect on the number of free rediae, their growth, and their larval productivity in each redia category. The mammalian origin of miracidia had a significant influence on the numbers of free rediae (they were higher in cattle-group snails) and the lengths of rediae (they were lower in rabbit groups). The redia category had also a significant effect on body and pharyngeal measure

Ecology of Borrelia burgdorferi in ticks (Acari: Ixodidae), rodents, and birds in the Sierra Nevada foothills, Placer County, California.

This study examined the prevalence of Borrelia burgdorferi Johnson, Schmid, Hyde, Steigerwalt & Brenner in host-seeking adult and nymphal Ixodes pacificus Cooley & Kohls and estimated the I. pacificus infestation and B. burgdorferi infection of rodent and avian hosts in the western Sierra Nevada foothills of northern California. Additionally, we identified species likely to participate in an enzootic cycle for B. burgdorferi in this yellow pine transition habitat. Evidence of infection with B. burgdorferi was identified in 7.3 and 5.4% of host-seeking I. pacificus adults and nymphs, respective

Characteristics of garden dormice that contribute to their capacity as reservoirs for lyme disease spirochetes.

To describe the contribution of garden dormice to the epizootiology of Lyme disease, we compared their reservoir capacity for these pathogens to that of other sympatric hosts. Garden dormice are trapped most abundantly during early spring and again during midsummer, when their offspring forage. They are closely associated with moist forests. Garden dormice serve as hosts to nymphal ticks far more frequently than do other small mammals. Spirochetal infection is most prevalent in dormice, and many more larval ticks acquire infection in the course of feeding on these than on other rodents in the
