In order to test whether or not increasing the peripheral free Mg concentration ([Mg(2+)]) would enhance glucose disposal, we have carried out glucose infusions in sheep with and without simultaneous infusion of Mg. AIM: To determine the aetiology of a recurring and severe form of infectious keratoconjunctivitis (IKC) in sheep.
METHODS: Five sheep flocks that had experienced a severe form of IKC were examined. Clinical history, conjunctival swabs and blood samples were collected from affected animals. Culture for bacteria, and also specifically for Mycoplasma and Chlamydophila spp, and detection of Mycoplasma conjunctivae DNA by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) were attempted. Diarrhoea and soiling of the breech with faeces ('winter scours') is a serious problem in adult Merino sheep grazing improved pastures in south-eastern Australia during winter and spring. The dominant clinical symptoms were a liver and bone marrow involvement, whereas pulmonary manifestations were absent.
