The Authors report their experience in the management of 25 cancers of the splenic flexure corresponding to 4.8% of large bowel cancers overall observed. Twelve patients underwent elective surgery consisting in a left hemicolectomy, which in 1 of the 12 cases required an associated distal splenopancreatectomy. The authors report a case of the passage of a total colonic J-pouch "cast" per anus after anoabdominal rectal resection and colonic J-pouch-anal anastomosis. This occurred without development of cuff abscess and was not due to occlusion of the inferior mesenteric artery. This was successfully treated, with preservation of anal function, with resection of the colonic J-pouch by transanal approach.

A 36-year-old m an had stage B1 bladder cancer-treated by cystectomy and ureterosigmoidostomy. Postoperatively, a urinary leak was managed successfully by transureteroureterostomy and temporary colostomy. In succeeding years a large calculus developed in the region where the bladder had been and it also involved the sigmoid colon. The huge stone was removed successfully. A nonabsorbable suture was found in the center of the stone. This is a unique complication of ureterosigmoidostomy.

The authors describe their experience using TPN (total parenteral nutrition) associated with specific drugs in the treatment of antibiotic-associated pseudomembranous colitis in surgical patients. They discuss the benefits and the possible complications of the above mentioned treatment. Three different cases observed during a three year period are reported; one of these is carefully analysed in order to better explain the methods and procedures used during TPN.

An isolated retinal arterial aneurysm was found postmortem in the eye of a 75-year-old hypertensive woman, and multiple aneurysms were in the enucleated eye of a 68-year-old hypertensive man with neovascular glaucoma. The study has been concerned with DNA ploidy and its significance for prognosis of different neoplasms. The investigation included 314 patients: primary cancer of the lung (96), head and neck (146) and large bowel (72). Patients received surgery alone or surgery plus either radiotherapy or chemotherapy; they were followed up for 6-20 months. DNA levels were assayed in resected material using an ICP-22 flow cytometer. Diploid and aneuploid cancers were detected in 20.4-53.6 and 43.6-79.6%, respectively.
