Masseter muscle quality in acute ischemic stroke: Associations with functional outcome, dysphagia, and cerebral small vessel disease burden.

BACKGROUND: The masseter muscle-a surrogate of systemic muscle mass and quality-has been linked to dysphagia and mortality in oncology, but evidence in acute ischemic stroke (AIS) is limited. Cerebral small vessel disease (SVD), via oxidative stress and inflammation, may contribute. We investigated the prognostic value of masseter status in AIS, its relation to dysphagia, and association with SVD. METHODS: Consecutive AIS patients admitted between January 2022 and March 2024 within one week of onset were screened. Unfavorable outcome was defined as mRS 3-6 at 3 months. On contrast-enhanced CT

Risk Stratification for Rebleeding in Obscure Gastrointestinal Bleeding After Comprehensive Gastrointestinal Evaluation.

Background and Aim: Obscure gastrointestinal bleeding (OGIB) is defined as bleeding of unknown origin after comprehensive upper, lower, and small-bowel evaluations. However, the incidence and predictors of rebleeding after negative comprehensive gastrointestinal evaluation remain unclear. We aimed to identify predictors of rebleeding and develop a simple risk stratification score for OGIB. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 226 patients diagnosed with OGIB between 2009 and 2024. The primary outcome was rebleeding during follow-up. Independent predictors were identified using multivariable Co

CLEC7A as a potential biomarker of atherosclerotic response to aspirin therapy: a multi-omics analysis.

Many patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) do not respond well to aspirin therapy. This study employed a multi-omics approach to identify key genes associated with aspirin non-responsiveness, thereby providing potential molecular targets and theoretical basis for improving the precision treatment strategies for ASCVD patients. One aspirin non-responsiveness dataset and two atherosclerosis-related datasets were obtained from the Gene Expression Omnibus database. After identifying differentially expressed genes through weighted gene co-expression network analysis and diffe

Time-Series Change Detection Using KOMPSAT-5 Data with Statistical Homogeneous Pixel Selection Algorithm.

For change detection in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery, amplitude change detection (ACD) and coherent change detection (CCD) are widely employed. However, time-series SAR data often contain noise and variability introduced by system and environmental factors, requiring mitigation. Additionally, the stability of SAR signals is preserved when calibration accounts for temporal and environmental variations. Although ACD and CCD techniques can detect changes, spatial variability outside the primary target area introduces complexity into the analysis. This study presents a robust change dete

Effect of antiemetic corticosteroids on the development of immune-related adverse events caused by chemoimmunotherapy: a multicenter retrospective study.

PURPOSE: Chemoimmunotherapy is the primary treatment approach for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC); however, it is associated with immune-related adverse events (irAEs). Corticosteroids can control irAEs through their anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects. Dexamethasone (DEX) is a potent corticosteroid commonly used to prevent chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV). This study aimed to the association of corticosteroids used to alleviate CINV and irAE occurrence. METHODS: This retrospective study included patients with NSCLC who underwent chemoimmunotherapy across eight h

BloodImage: Benchmarking vision transformers for blast detection in digital blood films using public and clinical datasets.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Leukemia is one of the most common cancers in the UK and it is usually initially diagnosed through the time-consuming and subjective analysis of blood films by an expert hematologist. When a small number of blast cells may be present on a blood film, it is difficult to detect them even after a thorough review. Automating blood film image analysis could significantly speed up the process and improve diagnostic accuracy. This study benchmarks a machine learning framework based on vision transformers (ViTs) for automated blast detection in digitized blood films, evaluat

Source Localization of Normal Variants Seen on EEG.

PURPOSE: The EEG is an essential neurological diagnostic tool. EEG abnormalities can guide diagnosis and management of epilepsy. There are also distinctive EEG waveforms that are seen in healthy individuals. It is critical not to misinterpret these as abnormal. To emphasize the importance of these waveforms, we analyzed different normal variants via the source localization technology. METHODS: This is a retrospective analysis of EEGs performed at the Duke University Hospital between June 2014 and Dec 2019. We selected samples of vertex waves, Mu, lambda, POSTS, wickets, and sleep spindles for

The Predictive Value of Gastrin for the Absorption of Erlotinib in Patients with Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Gastrin regulates gastric acid secretion and increases when gastric acidity is reduced. Erlotinib, a small-molecule inhibitor used to treat patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), has a pH-dependent absorption. We therefore investigated whether elevated gastrin levels, for example, due to proton pump inhibitor (PPI) use or achlorhydria, are associated with reduced erlotinib absorption. METHODS: Data of patients treated with erlotinib for NSCLC that were included in two previously conducted pharmacokinetic studies were used for this pharmacological

Biomechanical comparative analysis of multiple small diameter fan-shaped and parallel core decompression for early osteonecrosis of the femoral head.

BACKGROUND: Multiple small diameter fan-shaped and parallel core decompression are the surgical procedure used to treat the early osteonecrosis of the femoral head. However, It is not known which method is more appropriate from biomechanical perspective. Therefore, we aimed to analyze the mechanical stability of different distribution parameters of the two drilling methods using finite element analysis. METHODS: Ten finite element models were established, including different drilling number (three-hole, four-hole, five-hole, seven-hole and nine-hole) based on fan-shaped and parallel core deco

Bowel Ischemia Score Predicts Early Operation in Patients With Adhesive Small Bowel Obstruction.

BACKGROUND: Nonoperative management of adhesive small bowel obstruction (SBO) is successful in up to 80% of patients. Current recommendations advocate for computed tomography (CT) scan in all patients with SBO to supplement surgical decision-making. The hypothesis of this study was that cumulative findings on CT would predict the need for operative intervention in the setting of SBO. METHODS: This is an analysis of a retrospectively and prospectively collected adhesive SBO database over a 6-year period. A Bowel Ischemia Score (BIS) was developed based on the Eastern Association for the Surger
