The role of a community conversation intervention in reducing stigma related to lower limb lymphoedema in Northern Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Stigma related to lower-limb lymphoedema poses a major psychosocial burden to affected persons and acts as a barrier to them accessing morbidity management and disability prevention (MMDP) services. Community Conversation (CC), which actively engages community members and disseminates health information amongst them, is believed to break the vicious cycle of stigma by enhancing disease-related health literacy at the community level. METHODS: A quasi-experimental study was conducted in Northern Ethiopia to assess the role of the CC intervention in reducing stigma. In two control di

Race, area deprivation index, and access to surgical burn care in a pediatric population in North Carolina.

BACKGROUND: Burns represent a leading cause of morbidity and mortality for children. This study explores the intersecting effects of social deprivation and race in pediatric burn patients. METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of all pediatric patients (<18 years old) admitted to a tertiary burn center in North Carolina from 2009 to 2019. We used bivariate analysis to compare patients based on reported race, comparing African Americans (AA) to all others. Modified Poisson regression was used to model the probability of undergoing autologous skin grafting based on AA race. RESULTS: Of

The effect of oral contraceptive use on cortisol reactivity to the Trier Social Stress Test: A meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Some research suggests that oral contraceptive pills (OCPs) blunt the cortisol stress response, thus OCP users are often excluded from stress research. The current study examined changes in salivary cortisol among females taking OCPs and naturally cycling (NC) females after exposure to the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST). METHODS: The literature search included the terms "oral contraceptives" OR "oral contraception" OR "birth control" OR "birth control pill" AND "Trier Social Stress Test" OR "TSST" AND "cortisol" OR "salivary cortisol." A total of 14 studies with 36 independent sa

A tai chi/qigong intervention for older adults living with HIV: a study protocol of an exploratory clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Almost half of people living with HIV (PLWH) in the USA are over 50 years of age; this is expected to increase to 70% by 2020. Yet, few interventions exist for older PLWH that address psychological and physical symptoms combined, both prevalent in this population. There is a need to find innovative and accessible interventions that can help older PLWH to manage their symptoms. Mind-body interventions, like tai chi/qigong (TCQ), improve both physical and psychological health. TCQ is a series of slow, low-impact meditative movements that integrates breathwork, meditation, and stances

Abnormal asymmetry of thalamic volume moderates stress from parents and anxiety symptoms in children and adolescents with social anxiety disorder.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) usually onsets in childhood or adolescence and is associated with brain development and chronic family stress during this period. As an information hub, the thalamus plays a crucial role in the development of emotion processing and stress regulation. Its structural and functional lateralization have been related to mental disorders. This study examined the age-dependent asymmetry of the thalamic volume in children and adolescents with SAD. We further examined the role of the thalamic asymmetry in moderating the relationships between parental alienation, which is a

Living with faecal incontinence: trying to control the daily life that is out of control.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To identify and describe the lived experience of persons living with faecal incontinence and show how it affects daily life. BACKGROUND: Faecal incontinence is a relatively common condition, with a prevalence ranging from 3-24%, not differing between men and women. There is an under-reporting due to patients' reluctance to talk about their symptoms and consult healthcare professionals about their problems, which means that problems related to faecal incontinence are often underestimated. Living with faecal incontinence affects the quality of life negatively and has a nega

Effectiveness of hospital-based smoking cessation.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Smoking cessation for current smokers is a health-care imperative. It is not clear which approaches to smoking cessation are the most effective in the hospital setting and which factors predict long-term abstinence. We hypothesized that a hospital-based smoking cessation program involving behavioral modification and support would provide an effective intervention for smoking cessation. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. SETTING: Smoking cessation clinics in a tertiary referral, cardiothoracic hospital. PATIENTS OR PARTICIPANTS: Two hundred forty-three smokers and 187 never-

Social and emotional self-regulation.

In humans, frontal lesions result in deficits of social and emotional behavior that are often surprising in the presence of intact language and other cognitive skills. The connections between the motivation and memory functions of limbic cortex and the motor planning functions of frontal neocortex must be fundamental to meeting the daily challenges of self-regulation. The connectional architecture of limbic and neocortical networks suggests a model of function. The densely interconnected paralimbic cortices may serve to maintain a global motivational context within which specific actions are a

Control of the African trypanosomiases with special reference to land use.

There is a need to reassess the role of the trypanosomiases, both human and animal, in African ecology and economy. Withdrawal of control services from the Congo basin was followed by a resurgence of infection from ancient foci, many of them thought to have been extinguished. Successful elimination of Glossina in savanna habitats has sometimes been followed by reinvasion causing massive epizootics. Elsewhere continued recession of the tsetse fly has been followed by cattle population growth which is periodically interrupted by catastrophic pasture famines.Efficiency of control rather than larg

COVID-19, Monkeypox, climate change and surgery: A syndemic undermines the right to be operated in a clean, healthy and sustainable environment.

The compounding effect of infectious outbreaks and climate change has put a strain on surgical care. Adverse weather conditions derail preoperative planning, postoperative recovery, supply chains and equipment. The COVID-19 pandemic has restricted elective surgical care for the past two years. It is expected that novel SARS-CoV-2 strains and the emergence of Monkeypox can also put barriers to surgical care. Consecutively, mounting surgical morbidity and strenuous efforts to adhere to infection control further increase the ecological footprint of surgical care fueling a vicious circle of clinic

Mask Use During COVID-19: A Social-Ecological Analysis.

To limit the spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued recommendations that individuals wear face masks in public. Despite these recommendations, the individual decision to adhere and wear a mask may not be a simple decision. In this article, we examine the decision to wear a mask from a social-ecological perspective. Through critical analysis of societal, interpersonal and community, and intrapersonal influences, it is clear that the decision to wear a mask is multifaceted and influenced by constructs including public health recommend
