PURPOSE: Children attend to speech variation to inform a variety of linguistic and social judgments about a talker. Communication impairments, such as speech sound disorders (SSDs), can impact social judgments made by older typically developing (TD) children and adult listeners. However, less is known about young children's perceptions of speakers with SSDs.
METHOD: Four-, five-, and six-year-old TD children's (n = 37) social judgments of TD talkers and talkers with SSDs were examined in two tasks: (a) a two-alternative forced choice friendship selection task, in which listeners heard contras

PURPOSE: While there is no cure for stuttering, therapy can help children who stutter (CWS) reduce the adverse effects imposed by stuttering. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) guarantees "special education and related services" at no cost to all children with disabilities. However, a potential interplay of variables may influence service provision for CWS. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to identify some of the determinants of receiving (a) an evaluation and (b) speech-language therapy (SLT) among a nationally representative sample of CWS.
METHOD: This analysis u

PURPOSE: Evidence supporting parent-implemented intervention (PII) in treating young children with language delays mostly exists in Indo-European languages. Given the linguistic diversity and cultural differences, the purpose of the study is to examine the efficacy of PII compared to therapist-implemented intervention (TII) in treating Hebrew-speaking preschool children with language delay.
METHOD: In a prospective controlled study using a convenience sample, 40 toddlers with language delays were divided into two intervention groups, PII (N = 19) versus TII (N = 21). Those in the TII group pa

PURPOSE: Intensive speech-language therapy (SLT) delivered as telerehabilitation in combination with transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) may be an effective treatment option for people with primary progressive aphasia (pwPPA). However, such combined treatment approaches are technically challenging, and feasibility for pwPPA has not yet been established. We aimed to involve stakeholders in the development of a novel approach combining remotely supervised but independently self-administered home-based tDCS with an intensive aphasia telerehabilitation (naming and communicative-pragmati

PURPOSE: Camp Dream. Speak. Live. is an intensive, strengths-based, manualised treatment program for children who stutter, with no indirect or direct fluency goals. This study determined the effectiveness of a virtual adaptation of Camp Dream. Speak. Live. in reducing the adverse impact of stuttering and increasing communication competence.
METHOD: Sixty-one children who stutter (ages 3 to 17 years) participated in Virtual Camp Dream. Speak. Live. pre- and post-treatment measures were identical to previous in-person administrations: (a) Self- and caregiver-report of cognitive and affective im

PURPOSE: There is a critical need to develop evidence-based and accessible interventions for Spanish speakers with aphasia (SSWA). Script training is a well-established treatment that helps people with aphasia learn sentences for daily-life situations, but its evidence comes primarily from English speakers. This study aimed to examine the acceptability, usability, and preliminary efficacy of a script training intervention delivered via open-source software using adaptive distributed practice for SSWA.
METHOD: Six SSWA participated in this single-subject multiple-baseline design. Acceptability

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the sensitivity and specificity of the Yale Swallow Protocol (YSP) in detecting aspiration in recently extubated patients.
METHOD: One hundred fifty-four participants referred for swallowing evaluation underwent the YSP and fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES) in random order within 48 hr of extubation. The YSP included orientation questions, an oral motor exam, and a 3-oz water swallow test. Failure was defined as interrupted drinking or immediate cough after drinking. FEES exams were rated using the Penetration Aspiration

PURPOSE: Chronic refractory cough (CRC), defined as cough lasting over 8 weeks despite medical intervention, is a prevalent condition with a number of associated comorbidities. Cough suppression therapy (CST) has been demonstrated to be a promising avenue for treating CRC by improving airway control and coordination. However, little is known about the effects of CST in CRC patients diagnosed with comorbid oropharyngeal dysphagia (DYS) despite a large subset of patients with both conditions. The purpose of this study was to determine if CST affects self-assessment of DYS severity in patients di

PURPOSE: Disordered airway protection, including both disordered swallowing (dysphagia) and disordered cough (dystussia), is highly prevalent among persons with Parkinson's disease (pwPD). A comprehensive understanding of the perspectives of pwPD as it relates to airway protection is currently lacking and is necessary to provide relevant, person-centered care. Therefore, this study used a parallel-convergent mixed methods design to quantitatively and qualitatively investigate pwPD's perspectives on airway protection.
METHOD: Thirteen pwPD were consecutively recruited from a cough training tri

PURPOSE: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a life-altering event that can abruptly and drastically derail an individual's expected life trajectory. While some adults who have sustained a TBI go on to make a full recovery, many live with persisting disability many years postinjury. Helping patients adjust to and flourish with disability that may persist should be as much a part of rehabilitative practice as addressing impairment, activity, and participation-level changes after TBI. Living with a sense of purpose in daily life has been shown to provide numerous health and psychological benefits in

PURPOSE: Speech-language pathologists support children with paediatric feeding disorder and their families. However, international research highlights challenges, including inadequate training. While some Australian parents perceive speech-language pathologists as having limited knowledge and interest in paediatric feeding disorder, no studies have explored speech-language pathologists' experiences in this context.
METHOD: This study examined the perspectives of 11 experienced speech-language pathologists working in a community setting in one Australian city. Semi-structured interviews were c

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of dysphagia has been increasing over the years, with some individuals at a greater risk. Social determinants of health (SDOH) can affect some individual's access to care and their health more than others. The objective of this study is to explore the role of SDOH on self-reported dysphagia in older adults (aged 65 years and older) living in the United States.
METHOD: The 2022 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) is a database that collects health information of over 35,000 individuals across the United States. A secondary cross-sectional data analysis determin
