Fatal Multiorgan Failure Syndrome in a Strongyloides-HTLV-1 Coinfected Patient, after Treatment with Ivermectin.

Because of its characteristic features of autoinfection, the parasitic nematode Strongyloides stercoralis can infect patients for years. An acceleration of its autoinfective cycle can be triggered by human T-lymphotropic virus-1 (HTLV-1) infection, mainly by the deviation of the protective Th2- to Th1-type immune response and can lead to severe disease by dissemination of Strongyloides stercoralis larvae carrying intestinal bacteria to multiple organs. Meningitis caused by enteric Gram-negative bacteria is a potentially fatal complication of disseminated strongyloidiasis. Herein, we present th…

Efficacy of Single Dose Ivermectin Against Strongyloides stercoralis Infection Among Primary School Children in Amhara National Regional State.

BACKGROUND: Ivermectin has been proven to be highly effective against Strongyloides stercoralis in some countries. However, its single dose … tin was observed. CONCLUSION: Single dose ivermectin is an effective dose in uncomplicated chronic strongyloidiasis.

Strongyloidosis Hyperinfection Syndrome in an HIV-Infected Patient: A Rare Manifestation of Immune Reconstitution Inflammatory Syndrome.

Parasitic infections such as Strongyloides stercoralis and HIV have been reported to coexist, particularly in resource-limited settings such as India. In an immunocompromised host, S. stercoralis can progress to strongyloidiasis hyperinfection syndrome (SHS). However, SHS is not common in patients with advanced HIV disease. Immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (IRIS) developing after initiation of antiretroviral therapy (ART) can target multiple pathogens including S. stercoralis. The authors present here a 46-year-old HIV-infected female who was recently diagnosed with HIV-1 infection,…

Regional variation in travel-related illness acquired in Africa, March 1997-May 2011.

To understand geographic variation in travel-related illness acquired in distinct African regions, we used the GeoSentinel Surveillance Netw … gion: malaria predominated in travelers returning from Central and Western Africa; schistosomiasis, strongyloidiasis, and dengue from Eastern and Western Africa; and loaisis from Central Africa. There were few reports of vaccine-preventable infections, HIV infection, and tuberculosis. Geographic profiling of illness acquired during travel to Africa guides targeted …

Prevalence and risk of having Strongyloides stercoralis infection in alcoholic patients: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Strongyloides stercoralis infection affects approximately 600 million individuals worldwide. This parasite has the ability to exacerbate inf … alcoholic individuals. These findings highlight chronic alcoholism as a significant risk factor for strongyloidiasis, likely due to a combination of environmental, physiological, and immunological factors. This meta-analysis underscores the critical need for routine screening for S. stercoralis infection in patients with AUD, even in the absence of clinical sympto …

Effect of dilution of stool soluble component on growth and development of Strongyloides stercoralis.

Dispersion or dilution of stool by water from heavy rainfall may affect Strongyloides stercoralis free-living development producing infective filariform larvae (FL). This study examined effect of water dilution of stool on survival of S. stercoralis free-living development. One g of stool was prepared in water so that its soluble component was diluted sequentially from 1:2 to 1:480. Three dishes were used to compare FL production in three culture conditions: stool suspension, stool sediment deposited in soil, and isolated rhabditiform larvae (RhL) deposited in soil. The fourth dish was for dev

[Diagnosis of Strongyloides Stercoralis infection: meta-analysis on evaluation of conventional parasitological methods (1980-2013)].

BACKGROUND: Research on diagnostic methods have strongyloidiasis divergent validity and incomplete by not reporting data on safety, efficiency and performance diagnosis. OBJECTIVE: To assess validity, performance, efficiency and safety of four diagnostic conventional parasitological methods for detection of Strongyloides stercoralis infection in the period 1980-2013. METHODS: Systematic review with meta-analysis, exhaustive and reproducible literature search of six databases. Quality of the articles was assessed and meta-analysis was performed under the random effects model, calculating sens…

Recurrence of strongyloides stercoralis infection in a patient with Hansen's disease: a case report.

In patients with immunosuppressive disorders, S. stercoralis infection may develop into a hyperinfection syndrome which, on rare occasions, may be a life-threatening condition. Therapy of S. stercoralis infection with thiabendazole has been limited, due to its numerous side effects, and has been replaced by albendazole and ivermectin. The present case report describes a case of Strongyloides Hyperinfection Syndrome (SHS) in a patient with Hansen's disease and lack of response to first-line anthelmintic treatment. A 38 year-old man was diagnosed as having borderline lepromatous leprosy. He deve

Control of Strongyloides westeri by nematophagous fungi after passage through the gastrointestinal tract of donkeys.

Strongyloides westeri is the most prevalent nematode among equines aged up to four months and causes gastrointestinal disorders. The objective of this study was to observe the control of infective S. westeri larvae (L3) by the nematophagous fungi Duddingtonia flagrans (AC001) and Monacrosporium thaumasium (NF34) after passage through the gastrointestinal tract of female donkeys. Twelve dewormed female donkeys that were kept in stables were used. Two treatment groups each comprising four animals received orally 100 g of pellets made of sodium alginate matrix containing a mycelial mass of either

[Strongyloides stercoralis and HIV: a case report of an indigenous disseminated infection from non-endemic area].

Strongyloides stercoralis affects people who live in the tropics, but it also extends to temperate regions where its low incidence rate may … eminated hyperinfection until he died. This report presents not only the first case of disseminated strongyloidiasis detected in our Hospital but also an indigenous infection acquired in a non-endemic area. An awareness of an increased predisposition to this infection, especially in immunocompromised patients with malabsorption and ileus is of paramount importance …

Infection of mice with the helminth Strongyloides stercoralis suppresses pulmonary allergic responses to ovalbumin.

Asthma and helminth infections induce similar immune responses characterized by the presence of peripheral blood eosinophilia and elevated serum IgE levels. Epidemiological surveys have reported either increases or decreases in the development of atopic diseases and asthma based on the prevalence of helminth infections in the population. The aim of this study was to determine if a pre-existing helminth infection would increase or decrease subsequent allergic responses to an unrelated allergen in the lungs. BALB/cByJ mice were infected with the nematode parasite Strongyloides stercoralis prior
