Accidental ingestion of foreign bodies during dental procedures is relatively common, with the potential for serious complications, including intestinal perforations and severe pulmonary disorders. Our case report describes the prolonged, asymptomatic retention of a swallowed hex driver in the small bowel of a 38-year-old male, managed conservatively over an extended period. The patient, with a significant medical history of depression, was undergoing a dental procedure involving implant-supported restorations when the incident occurred. Initial x-rays confirmed the presence of the hex driver

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a prevalent sleep-related breathing disorder that results in multiple bouts of intermittent hypoxia. OSA has many neurologic and systemic comorbidities including dysphagia, or disordered swallow, and discoordination with breathing. However, the mechanism in which chronic intermittent hypoxia (CIH) causes dysphagia is unknown. Recently we showed the Postinspiratory complex (PiCo) acts as an interface between the swallow pattern generator (SPG) and the inspiratory rhythm generator, the preBötzinger Complex, to regulate proper swallow-breathing coordination (Huff

The study investigated surgical interventions to improve dysphagia in patients with lateral medullary syndrome (LMS), along with optimal scheduling of surgery and prognostic factors. In this retrospective, single-center cohort study, dysphagia patients with LMS who underwent surgery between January 2010 and December 2021 were enrolled. The National Outcomes Measurement System (NOMS) was used to classify swallowing function (level 1: only tube feeding, level 5: without tube feeding). Patients were divided into four groups. Groups 1 and 2, LMS onset within 1 year, and groups 3 and 4, onset after

BACKGROUND: Clinical evidence supports that swallowing function is correlated with cognition, but the neurobiological mechanism associated with cognitive impairment and dysphagia remains unclear.
OBJECTIVES: To compare the brain activation patterns of the swallowing and the cognitive tasks and explore neural associations between swallowing and cognitive function via task-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI).
METHODS: A total of 13 healthy older adults (aged > 60 years) were recruited. Participants underwent the clinical dementia rating (CDR) test and the Montreal Cognitive As

PURPOSE: Neurogenic dysphagia causes complications such as malnutrition, dehydration, and aspiration pneumonia. Therefore, early detection with clinically valid tools is essential. This study aimed to investigate the Eating Assessment Tool-10 (EAT-10) ability to detect swallowing efficiency at three different consistencies in neurogenic dysphagia.
METHODS: One hundred twelve patients with neurogenic dysphagia (74 males and 38 females, mean ± SD age 61.83 ± 9.72 years) were included in the study. A Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) was performed in the clinic following EAT-

We developed a wearable swallowing assessment device using a hetero-core fiber-optic pressure sensor for the detection of laryngeal movement during swallowing. The proposed pressure sensor (comfortably attached to the skin of the neck) demonstrated a high sensitivity of 0.592 dB/kPa and a linearity of R2 = 0.995 within a 14 kPa pressure band, which is a suitable pressure for the detection of laryngeal movement. In addition, since the fabricated hetero-core fiber-optic pressure sensor maintains appreciable sensitivity over the surface of the sensor, the proposed wearable swallowing assessment d

OBJECTIVES: Non-invasive surface recording devices used for detecting swallowing events include electromyography (EMG), sound, and bioimpedance. However, to our knowledge there are no comparative studies in which these waveforms were recorded simultaneously. We assessed the accuracy and efficiency of high-resolution manometry (HRM) topography, EMG, sound, and bioimpedance waveforms, for identifying swallowing events.
METHODS: Six participants randomly performed saliva swallow or vocalization of "ah" 62 times. Pharyngeal pressure data were obtained using an HRM catheter. EMG, sound, and bioimp

Quantitative measures are available for adult videofluoroscopic swallow study (VFSS) analysis but are yet to be seen routinely in clinical practice. This study explores agreement between traditional observational analysis and quantitative analysis, and the impact of analytical approaches on subsequent diagnosis and recommendations. One hundred adults referred for VFSSs with swallowing concerns were administered a standardised VFSS protocol. All VFSSs were analysed using three approaches: (1) a traditional observational analysis typically used by treating speech-language pathologists (SLPs), (2

Dysphagia is a syndrome of abnormal eating function resulting from a variety of causative diseases, and is associated with malnutrition. To date, the swallowing function has been difficult to examine without the use of invasive and expensive methods, such as the videofluorographic swallowing study or fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing. In recent years, progress has been made in the clinical application of ultrasound equipment for the evaluation of body compositions near the body surface, including the assessment of nutritional status. Ultrasound examination is a noninvasive procedu

PURPOSE: Esophageal screening is a valuable inclusion in videofluoroscopic swallowing studies (VFSSs). However, routine standardized esophageal screening does not always occur in clinical practice. This study introduced and evaluated an esophageal screening protocol at one Australian hospital.
METHOD: Radiology, gastroenterology, and speech-language pathology endorsed an esophageal screening protocol, which followed a timed 20-ml International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative Level 0 bolus from mouth to stomach in an upright anterior-posterior position. Texture-modified diets are the first-line compensatory strategy for older patients with swallowing and mastication disorders. However, the absence of a common protocol to assess textural properties inhibits their standardization and quality control and, thus, patient safety. This study aimed to (a) assess the rheological and textural properties of ten thick purees (Texture C, British Dietetic Association), (b) understand the effect of oral processing, and (c) measure the properties of the ready-to-swallow bolus after oral processing in healthy adults. Shear viscosity at 50 s-1 and 300 s-1 and

Objective: Videofluoroscopic swallow studies (VFSS) are highly effective in characterizing pediatric dysphagia, but they are time- and resource-intensive, and necessitate the use of radiation. Identifying patients unlikely to benefit from VFSS is crucial to improving patient safety and resource allocation. The purpose of this study was to assess whether the ability of a patient to consume at least 0.5 oz by mouth is a reliable indicator of their ability to produce a diagnostically useful VFSS. Study Design: Retrospective chart review. Methods: Clinical data of pediatric patients aged 0 to 18 y

This case report aimed to evaluate the swallowing capacity and the severity of the risk of laryngotracheal aspiration of a 52-year-old female patient with atypical and rare stroke, with major injury in the cerebellar pathway. In order to measure swallowing capacity and risk of aspiration a routine clinical assessment used in the speech therapy clinic was performed and two valid clinical tests were used: Massey Bedside Swallowing Screen (MBSS) and Gugging Swallowing Screen (GUSS). After evaluation with the clinical tests, it was observed that the patient had reduced swallowing capacity, perform

In a prospective, randomized, experimental non-blinded study, the continuous infusions rates of propofol required to prevent swallowing (P-SR) or pedal withdrawal reflex (P-WR) were evaluated in healthy premedicated dogs. Dogs were randomly assigned to one of two treatments at weekly intervals. Following premedication with a combination of acepromazine and methadone, anesthesia was induced with propofol (4.00 mg kg-1 per min) and was maintained for 90 min. The propofol infusion rate was increased or decreased by 0.05 mg kg-1 per min based on positive or negative swallowing (P-SR) or pedal with
