The management of patients with intestinal failure has benefited from progress in parenteral nutrition (PN), especially home-based PN. We report the results of a study on 100 patients (aged 12-68) with vitiligo, who were treated by transplantation of cultured autologous melanocytes to the depigmented areas, after removal of the epidermis at the recipient site by dermabrasion. A cross sectional study assessed the bone mineral density (BMD) of 20 young adult patients who received a renal transplantation in childhood. The BMD of the lumbar spine, mainly trabecular bone, and of the total body, mainly cortical bone, were measured and expressed as an SD score. Antiviral antibodies clearly play a role in organ transplantation. The only antibody with a licensed indication for this population is CMVIG; however, the use of HBIG has become the standard of care for those patients at risk for HBV recurrence, and the use of VZIG would appear to be indicated for exposures to varicella-zoster in patients lacking immunity. Future studies defining the role of antiviral antibodies for therapy are necessary, and the role of antibody to prevent the EBV PTLD remains to be explored.

Clinical cardiac transplantation was successfully introduced 26 years ago, and from an initial experimental status, it has moved forward to become an accepted and well-established treatment modality for end-stage cardiac disease. The first cardiac transplant operation in Hawaii was performed in March 1987; the patient lived for 1 year.
