Data on 348 adult patients with tuberculous spondylitis treated in 1994-1999 are analyzed. The radiation manifestations of spondylitis first occurring in maturity, which amount to 82.3% in the clinical setting were studied in 112 patients. In 50% of cases, spondylitis was a manifestation of multiorgan tuberculosis. The proportion of those with onset in youth increased (27.9). Isolated lesions of the corpus vertebrae were more frequently detected. The processes involving 2 vertebrae were predominant (61.2%), but complicated by foci at new levels. There was a drastic increase in the proportion o

INTRODUCTION: Postoperative spondylodiscitis (POSD) is not uncommon. The incidence of POSD varies between 0.21- 3.6% In this study, it was aimed to examine the clinical findings, diagnosis and treatment of postoperative spondylodiscitis (POSD).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between September 2017 and October 2022, 37 patients were included in the study, who applied to the Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology Clinic of the XXX Hospital and had POSD infection and were followed-up/treated as outpatients or inpatients. The following were examined: symptoms, physical examination findings, contra

One of the adjunctive modes of diagnosing tuberculous meningitis (TBM) is to detect immune responses in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) to the Mycobacterium tuberculosis antigen. Up to 70% of clinical TBM reveal the presence of antimycobacterial antibody by the enzyme-linked immunosorbant assay. Defining the specificity of this immune response by Western blotting on separated M. tuberculosis antigen has been attempted in this study. Only antimycobacterial antibody-positive TBM cases were included in the study. An analysis of 30 such TBM cases showed a major immune reactivity to the 30- to 40-kDa

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: There is a paucity of guidelines about the diagnosis and management of Pott's spine. In this study, we report the pattern of practice of diagnosis and treatment of Pott's spine among the specialists and super-specialists in India.
SUBJECT AND METHODS: Response to a 22-item questionnaire regarding the diagnosis and treatment of Pott's spine has been reported. The responses were compared between medical and surgical specialists, residents and consultants, and specialists and super-specialists. There were 84 responders: 42 physicians and 42 surgeons; 48 residents and 36

Physicians remember the name of the surgeon Percivall Pott (1713-1788) because of the eponym "Pott's disease", described as "paralysis in the lower limbs, which is often accompanied by curvature of the spine". Pott's writings on surgical subjects are far vaster. For example, he described the fracture-dislocation of the ankle, or Pott's fracture, and determined the cause of scrotum cancer in chimney sweeps. He attributed this disease to contact with tar that contaminated the clothing of workers, often very young children because they were small enough to fit into chimney conduits. His work led

Tuberculous cold abscesses are a rare and unusual form of extrapulmonary tuberculosis. We here report the case of a 27-year old patient with a 5-month history of left dorsolumbar swelling presenting with dorsolumbar cold abscess revealing Pott's disease without neurological complications. Examination of pus sample collected at the time the abscess was incised and drained helped to confirm the diagnosis of cold abscesses of TB origin. The patient underwent 12 months of anti-tuberculosis treatment which lead to a faster recovery; the sequelae was slight gibbosity.

BACKGROUND: Differences between the characteristics of culture positive pyogenic spondylitis (CPPS) and tuberculous spondylitis (TS) are well known. However, differences between the characteristics of culture negative pyogenic spondylitis (CNPS) and TS have not been reported; these would be more helpful in clinical practice especially when initial microbiologic examination of blood and/or biopsy tissue did not reveal the causative bacteria in patients with infectious spondylitis.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of the medical records of patients with CNPS and TS. We compared the

The authors report on a case of Pott's disease in a patient attending a long-term psychiatric hospital for about 34 years. Difficulties regarding case management concern either diagnosis, due to the numerous and misleading comorbidities, or pharmacological treatment, due to both the interference between neurotropic and antitubercular drugs and the capacity of some antimycobacterial drugs to reduce significantly the epileptogenic threshold, thus enhancing epileptic crises.

In the industrialized countries, the last 15 years have seen an increasing rate of cases of tuberculosis. However, upper cervical spine tuberculosis involving a cold retropharyngeal abscess is extremely rare. We report on a 58 year old female from Sri Lanka presenting with unspecific neck pain and stiffness. She was diagnosed as having extensive tubercular osteodestruction of the second cervical spine body, including epidural and large retropharyngeal abscesses.

A 3-year-old girl presented with features suggestive of compression of cauda equina. In addition, she had soft, fluctuant gluteal swelling, which on aspiration yielded pus, positive for acid-fast bacilli on staining and culture. She showed significant clinicoradiological improvement following aspiration of pus and antitubercular treatment. Rare manifestations of cold abscess in the spine are discussed.
