[Adolescents in pediatric practice (author's transl)].

Some problems concerning adolescents arising in pediatric practice are reviewed: morphological problems (stature, nutrition, vertebral statics), puberty problems (delayed puberty, acne vulgaris, menstrual disorders, contraception, mammary development), health problems proper (especially epilepsy) and, lastly, problems related to environment: school, family, media. The pediatrician seems to be the doctor most qualified to approach adolescent just as he is for children.

Neuroendocrine mechanisms in the links between early life stress, affect, and youth substance use: A conceptual model for the study of sex and gender differences.

Early life stress (ELS) is defined as an acute or chronic stressor that negatively impacts a child's development. ELS is associated with substance use and mental health problems. This narrative literature review focuses on sex and gender differences in the effects of ELS on 1) adolescent neuroendocrine development; 2) pubertal brain maturation; and 3) development of internalizing symptoms and subsequent substance use. We posit that ELS may generate larger hormonal dysregulation in females than males during puberty, increasing internalizing symptoms and substance use. Future research should con

Aging with alcohol-related brain damage: Critical brain circuits associated with cognitive dysfunction.

Alcoholism is associated with brain damage and impaired cognitive functioning. The relative contributions of different etiological factors, such as alcohol, thiamine deficiency and age vulnerability, to the development of alcohol-related neuropathology and cognitive impairment are still poorly understood. One reason for this quandary is that both alcohol toxicity and thiamine deficiency produce brain damage and cognitive problems that can be modulated by age at exposure, aging following alcohol toxicity or thiamine deficiency, and aging during chronic alcohol exposure. Pre-clinical models of a

The prevalence of overweight and obesity and the assessment of associated risk factors among school-aged adolescents in Kandahar City, Afghanistan.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent obesity is a growing global public health issue, contributing to the early onset of non-communicable diseases like type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disorders. In South Asia, including Afghanistan, urbanization and lifestyle changes have triggered a nutritional shift marked by unhealthy diets and reduced physical activity. Yet, research on adolescent obesity in Afghanistan, particularly in urban areas like Kandahar, is scarce. Kandahar's rapid development and cultural diversity necessitate an assessment of obesity prevalence and associated risk factors among school-goin

A social media intervention for the families of young Black men with obstructive sleep apnoea.

OBJECTIVE: To address positive airway pressure (PAP) adherence in adolescents diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) by pilot testing a novel, online, facilitated, peer-support and health education programme for families. DESIGN SETTING AND METHODS: Families participated in separate Facebook peer-groups (adolescent [n=6] and parent [n=6]) for four weeks, followed by face-to-face interviews. Participants received OSA and PAP educational videos and posts, engaged with questions and polls, and viewed de-identified postings of peer PAP use data. RESULTS: Adolescent participants were young

The impact of a lack of mathematical education on brain development and future attainment.

Formal education has a long-term impact on an individual's life. However, our knowledge of the effect of a specific lack of education, such as in mathematics, is currently poor but is highly relevant given the extant differences between countries in their educational curricula and the differences in opportunities to access education. Here we examined whether neurotransmitter concentrations in the adolescent brain could classify whether a student is lacking mathematical education. Decreased γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) concentration within the middle frontal gyrus (MFG) successfully classified wh

Exploring the Effects of Problematic Internet Use on Adolescent Sleep: A Systematic Review.

Adolescent suse internet via several devices to gather information or communicate. Sleep, as a key factor of adolescents' development, contributes to their physical and mental health. Over the past decades insufficient sleep among adolescents has been wide spread, and one of its attributing factors is the increased availability of technology. This review aims to investigate the body of evidence regarding the impact of problematic internet use on adolescent sleep. Extensive search of databases was performed according to PRISMA guidelines for studies published within the last decade, regarding s

Morphine exposure alters Fos expression in a sex-, age-, and brain region-specific manner during adolescence.

Data in both humans and preclinical animal models clearly indicate drug exposure during adolescence, when the "reward" circuitry of the brain develops, increases the risk of substance use and other mental health disorders later in life. Human data indicate that different neural and behavioral sequelae can be observed in early versus late adolescence. However, most studies with rodent models examine a single adolescent age compared to a mature adult age, and often only in males. Herein, we sought to determine whether the acute response to the opioid morphine would also differ across adolescence

Adolescent and Young Adult Male Mental Health: Transforming System Failures Into Proactive Models of Engagement.

Adolescent and young adult men do poorly on indicators of mental health evidenced by elevated rates of suicide, conduct disorder, substance use, and interpersonal violence relative to their female peers. Data on global health burden clearly demonstrate that young men have a markedly distinct health risk profile from young women, underscoring different prevention and intervention needs. Evidence indicates that boys disconnect from health-care services during adolescence, marking the beginning of a progression of health-care disengagement and associated barriers to care, including presenting to

Childhood language skills and adolescent self-esteem in preterm survivors.

Fifty-seven percent of children with poor language skills are affected by socio-emotional problems. Despite the importance of language skills to interpersonal functioning and school performance, relatively little is known about how they affect self-esteem in adolescence. Data on youth at high risk for language problems (e.g. those born extremely low birth weight (ELBW; <1000 grams)) are even more scarce. This prospective study examined associations between language skills at age 8 and self-esteem during adolescence (12-16 years) in individuals born at ELBW ( N = 138) or normal birth weight (NB

Preschool externalizing behavior predicts gender-specific variation in adolescent neural structure.

Dysfunction in the prefrontal cortex, amygdala, and hippocampus is believed to underlie the development of much psychopathology. However, to date only limited longitudinal data relate early behavior with neural structure later in life. Our objective was to examine the relationship of early life externalizing behavior with adolescent brain structure. We report here the first longitudinal study linking externalizing behavior during preschool to brain structure during adolescence. We examined the relationship of preschool externalizing behavior with amygdala, hippocampus, and prefrontal cortex vo

Long-term effects of exposure to methamphetamine in adolescent rats.

BACKGROUND: Flexible cognition is a set of processes mediated by the prefrontal cortex (PFC), an area of the brain that continues to develop during adolescence and into adulthood. Adult rodents exhibit impairments specific to reversal learning across various dosing regimens of methamphetamine (mAMPH). For adolescent rodents, ongoing PFC development can be assessed by discrimination reversal learning, a task dependent on frontostriatal integrity. The task may also index an increased vulnerability for mAMPH sampling in adulthood. METHODS: The purpose of the present study was to investigate the

White matter connectivity and aerobic fitness in male adolescents.

Exercise has been shown to have positive effects on the brain and behavior throughout various stages of the lifespan. However, little is known about the impact of exercise on neurodevelopment during the adolescent years, particularly with regard to white matter microstructure, as assessed by diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). Both tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS) and tractography-based along-tract statistics were utilized to examine the relationship between white matter microstructure and aerobic exercise in adolescent males, ages 15-18. Furthermore, we examined the data by both (1) grouping

Cross-sectional evidence for a stress-negative affect pathway to substance use among sexual minority girls.

Sexual minority girls (SMGs) are four times more likely to engage in substance use than are heterosexual girls. A better understanding of the explanatory mechanisms of this disparity is needed to inform prevention and intervention programs. The goal of this study was to conduct a preliminary test of a "stress-negative affect" pathway by examining gay-related victimization and depression as mediators of substance use among SMGs. Adolescent girls (N = 156, 41% SMGs) were recruited from two urban adolescent medicine clinics to participate in an NIH-funded study of adolescent substance use. The av

Update on child and adolescent immunizations: selected review of US recommendations and literature.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To provide a clinically relevant synopsis of recent research findings as well as updated guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics and Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices regarding child and adolescent immunizations. RECENT FINDINGS: Childhood vaccinations have served to dramatically reduce pediatric morbidity and mortality in the USA. Much of the recent research has focused on the improvement of current vaccines as well as on the development of new vaccines. By improving the safety, efficacy and immunogenicity of vaccinations, children can be more fully p

Anabolic-androgenic steroid exposure during adolescence and aggressive behavior in golden hamsters.

Anabolic androgenic steroid (AAS) abuse by adolescents represents a significant health care risk due to the potential for long-term negative … ssive behavior using a resident-intruder model. Animals treated with high doses of AAS during their adolescent development showed heightened measures of offensive aggression i.e., decreased latency to bite and increased total number of attacks and bites) during the test period, while measures of total activity (total contact time) between the animals remained unchanged. …

Developmental milestones and resting-state functional connectivity: Shared and distinct associations with neurodevelopmental traits.

BACKGROUND: Early motor and language milestones are key indicators of neurodevelopment, yet their associations with later autism traits and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms remain poorly understood. Neurobiological mechanisms linking early developmental delays to these conditions are not well established. Here, we investigate associations between early developmental milestones, resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC), and neurodevelopmental traits in a large adolescent sample. METHODS: Data were drawn from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study (ABCD) an

Effects of high fructose intake on the development of hypertension in the spontaneously hypertensive rats: the role of AT1R/gp91PHOX signaling in the rostral ventrolateral medulla.

Both genetic and dietary factors determine the development of hypertension. Whether dietary factor impacts the development of hereditary hypertension is unknown. Here, we evaluated the effect of daily high-fructose diet (HFD) on the development of hypertension in adolescent spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). Six-week-old SHR were randomly divided into two groups to receive HFD or normal diet (ND) for 3 weeks. The temporal profile of systolic blood pressure, alongside the sympathetic vasomotor activity, in the SHR-HFD showed significantly greater increases at 9-12 weeks of age compared with
