BACKGROUND: In November 2015, reuse of needles and syringes in conjunction with an increase in cases of HCV at a clinic in Korea was reported and investigated by public health authorities. Patients who received injections at the clinic from the first time this infection control breach may have occurred in 2008 through 2015 when the practice was stopped were offered screening for HCV and other blood-borne pathogens such as HIV, HTLV, HBV, syphilis, and malaria.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to assess whether an outbreak of hepatitis C had occurred among the potentially exposed clinic p…

Current macroscopic meat inspection cannot detect the most common pork-borne pathogens (Salmonella spp., Yersinia enterocolitica and Toxoplasma gondii). Furthermore, food chain information (FCI) may not provide sufficient data for visual-only inspection, which is supposed to be the common way of inspection of pigs in the European Union. Our observational study aimed to evaluate the serological monitoring and the clinical evaluation of on-farm health status of pigs and assess the feasibility of these data as part of the FCI in meat inspection. We studied the serological status of Salmonella spp

Recent controversy over whether biodiversity reduces disease risk (dilution effect) has focused on the ecology of Lyme disease, a tick-borne zoonosis. A criticism of the dilution effect is that increasing host species richness might amplify disease risk, assuming that total host abundance, and therefore feeding opportunities for ticks, increase with species richness. In contrast, a dilution effect is expected when poor quality hosts for ticks and pathogens (dilution hosts) divert tick blood meals away from competent hosts. Even if host densities are additive, the relationship between host dens

Participation in rugby football can expose individuals to a variety of infectious diseases both on and off the field of play. The close physical contact and trauma inherent in playing rugby facilitates the transmission of viral, bacterial and fungal pathogens between players and may also lead to the acquisition of potentially lethal infections from the environment, such as tetanus. In the past few years there have been a number of reported outbreaks of infection amongst rugby players in the medical literature. The appearance of HIV infection has focused attention on the potential for transmiss

BACKGROUND: Sand flies are vectors of the protozoan Leishmania spp. and phleboviruses. In Europe, several species are widely distributed in the Mediterranean region and a northward spread can be observed. They can be found regularly also in some regions of Central Europe, with Phlebotomus mascittii being the most cold-tolerant and northerly distributed species, but the knowledge on their distribution in countries such as Germany, Austria, Czechia, Slovakia, and Hungary remains fragmentary because of a lack of comprehensive field studies and a poor understanding of the ecological requirements a

BACKGROUND: Flavivirus infections pose a significant global health burden underscoring the need for the development of safe and effective vaccination strategies. Available flavivirus vaccines are from time to time concomitantly delivered to individuals. Co-administration of different vaccines saves time and visits to health care units and vaccine clinics. It serves to provide protection against multiple pathogens in a shorter time-span; e.g., for individuals travelling to different endemic areas. However, safety and immunogenicity-related responses have not been appropriately evaluated upon co

BACKGROUND: For over a decade, monitoring of West Nile virus (WNV) in Germany has consisted of a bird monitoring programme as well as a mosquito-based surveillance programme employing CO2-baited encephalitis vector surveillance (EVS) traps for mass trapping and screening of mosquitoes. In contrast to the EVS traps, the Reiter/Cummings type box gravid trap collects gravid female mosquitoes, which have already taken a blood meal, increasing the likelihood of being infected with pathogens. The traps can be equipped with a honey-baited Flinders Technology Associates® (FTA) card to encourage sugar

The acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) was recognized as a distinct entity in 1981. It began as a medical curiosity affecting only several dozen individuals in a restricted segment of the U.S. population. In the 12 years since its description, AIDS has become a pandemic affecting tens of millions with cases reported from all major countries. The illness is caused by a retrovirus, termed human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). It is a blood-borne disease with sexual, parenteral, and perinatal modes of transmission. Infection with the virus can be determined by a number of serologic techniqu

Armadillos and anteaters usually interact with a wide range of ectoparasites and associated pathogens. Combined with their unique physiological and ecological characteristics, these interactions make them potential hosts for a diverse range of vector-borne agents (VBA). Despite this, relatively few studies have investigated the occurrence of VBA in mammals of the superorder Xenarthra in Brazil. The present study aimed to investigate the occurrence and phylogenetic assessment of filarioid nematodes in wild armadillos and anteaters sampled in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Central-Western Braz

Dirofilaria repens is endemic in eastern and southern European regions but was recently found in Germany in dogs, mosquitoes and one human patient. Since some of the positive dog and mosquito samples were collected in Brandenburg, it was aimed to systematically assess the prevalence of D. repens and other canine vector-borne pathogens in Brandenburg. Dog owners also received a questionnaire and were asked to provide more information about the dogs including travel history. In total, 1023 dog blood samples as well as 195 fox spleen and 179 fox blood samples were collected. DNA was analysed by P

BACKGROUND: Flea-borne transmission of the plague bacillus, Yersinia pestis, occurs through two regurgitation-based mechanisms. One, called early-phase transmission (EPT), takes place within 24-96 hours post-infection through a poorly understood mechanism. The second requires an intrinsic incubation period and relies on the formation of a biofilm obstructing the flea's proventriculus. Although these mechanisms have been described in different flea species, they have never been characterized in Xenopsylla brasiliensis and Synopsyllus fonquerniei, which are two flea vectors suspected and confirm

BACKGROUND: The United Kingdom is considered free of autochthonous transmission of canine babesiosis although cases are reported in dogs associated with recent travel abroad. During the winter months of 2015/16, a cluster of cases of disease in dogs with signs suggestive of canine babesiosis were reported in Harlow, Essex.
METHODS: Babesia species were detected in dog blood samples by Giemsa staining of blood smears and by pan-piroplasm PCRs. Babesia species were also detected in extracts of tick DNA using pan-piroplasm PCRs. DNA sequencing and phylogenetic analysis was used to confirm the sp

BACKGROUND: As blood safety is a major concern in Transfusion Medicine. This study attempted to characterize the safety profile of different blood donor groups in order to maximize the use of limited recruitment resources and focus on selected donor groups. The A and B antigens followed by the D antigen are considered the most important, due to their role in blood transfusion and transplantation.
METHODS: This is a retrospective study reviewing records of 99757 donors who randomly donated at National Cancer Institute-Blood Bank as well as external blood drives conducted from 2000 to 2005. Don

The objective of this study was to estimate how often surgeons use surgical gowns, masks, gloves and eyewear in the context of occupational exposure to HIV. The authors also wanted to determine what factors were associated with the use of these strategies. Generally surgeons reported infrequent use of preventive strategies. Regular use of double gloving was reported only by 8.5% of respondents, eye protection by 23%. About three-quarters of surgeons reported they always used masks and gowns, 86%--single gloves. Doctors who used eye protection regularly had less blood contacts via conjunctiva p

BACKGROUND: The Human T-cell Lymphotropic Virus Type-1 (HTLV-1) is a blood-borne pathogen and etiological agent of Adult T-cell Leukemia/Lymphoma (ATLL) and HTLV-1 Associated Myelopathy/Tropical Spastic Paraparesis (HAM/TSP). HTLV-1 has currently infected up to 10 million globally with highly endemic areas in Japan, Africa, the Caribbean and South America. We have previously shown that Extracellular Vesicles (EVs) enhance HTLV-1 transmission by promoting cell-cell contact.
RESULTS: Here, we separated EVs into subpopulations using differential ultracentrifugation (DUC) at speeds of 2 k (2000×g

The cardiac puncture technique for obtaining relatively large volume (50-150 µL) blood samples from sedated rodents has been used in research for nearly a century. Historically, its use to phlebotomize and then release live rodents was more common. However, recently its use in a non-terminal capacity frequently imparts negative connotations in part because exsanguination of sedated animals via cardiac puncture is now an American Veterinary Medical Association-approved euthanasia technique. This association has resulted in ethical concerns by manuscript reviewers and in a few instances, outrigh

Rickettsia africae is a re-emerging tick-borne pathogen causing African tick bite fever (ATBF) in humans. Amblyomma variegatum is the principal vector in most sub-Sahara African countries, whereas in South Africa it is A. hebraeum. Reports of high genetic heterogeneity among R. africae isolates in southern Africa have prompted the need for molecular investigations of isolates form South Africa. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the prevalence and genetic diversity of R. africae in A. hebraeum collected from cattle, grazing pasture, as well as from blood of cattle in the Eastern Cape Pro

UNLABELLED: Vector competence defines the ability of a vector to acquire, host, and transmit a pathogen. Understanding the molecular determinants of the mosquitos' competence to host dengue virus (DENV) holds promise to prevent its transmission. To this end, we employed RNA-seq to profile mRNA transcripts of the female Aedes aegypti mosquitos feeding on naïve vs viremic mouse. While most transcripts (12,634) did not change their abundances, 360 transcripts showed decreases. Biological pathway analysis revealed representatives of the decreased transcripts involved in the wnt signaling pathway a

BACKGROUND: Infants born preterm are at high risk of anemia, red blood cell transfusions, and iron deficiency, all of which may negatively influence long-term neurodevelopment. To ameliorate these complications of prematurity, we developed a Phase II trial to determine whether treatment with an erythropoietic-stimulating agent, darbepoetin (Darbe), plus a slow-release intravenous (IV) iron preparation (ferumoxytol (FMX) or low-molecular-weight iron dextran (LMW-ID)) might decrease transfusions while maintaining iron sufficiency.
METHODS: This single-center study is a parallel design, prospect
