Clinical implications of the cervical Papanicolaou test results in the management of anal warts in HIV-infected women.

The Papanicolaou test (or Pap test) has long been used as a screening tool to detect cervical precancerous/cancerous lesions. However, studies on the use of this test to predict both the presence and change in size of genital warts are limited. We examined whether cervical Papanicolaou test results are associated with the size of the largest anal wart over time in HIV-infected women in an on-going cohort study in the US. A sample of 976 HIV-infected women included in a public dataset obtained from the Women's Interagency HIV Study (WIHS) was selected for analysis. A linear mixed model was perf

Intradermal injection of PPD as a novel approach of immunotherapy in anogenital warts in pregnant women.

Immunotherapy for treatment of recalcitrant warts was used through different modalities including intralesional injection of purified protein derivative (PPD), which is an extract of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, used for testing exposure to tuberculin protein, either from a previous vaccination or from the environment. This method is used to evaluate the efficacy of a new approach of intradermal injection of PPD in the treatment of anogenital warts in pregnant women. A total of 40 pregnant women, aged 20-35 years, and presented with anogenital warts were enrolled in this study. Human papillomav

Dermatoscopy of genital warts.

BACKGROUND: Genital warts may mimic a variety of conditions, thus complicating their diagnosis and treatment. The recognition of early flat lesions presents a diagnostic challenge. OBJECTIVE: We sought to describe the dermatoscopic features of genital warts, unveiling the possibility of their diagnosis by dermatoscopy. METHODS: Dermatoscopic patterns of 61 genital warts from 48 consecutively enrolled male patients were identified with their frequencies being used as main outcome measures. RESULTS: The lesions were examined dermatoscopically and further classified according to their dermatos

Measuring human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination coverage and the role of the National HPV Vaccination Program Register, Australia.

Accurate estimates of HPV vaccination coverage are critical for determining the proportion of the target female population that is not protected by the vaccine, as well as for monitoring the performance of vaccine delivery programs. The implementation of an HPV vaccination register, either as part of an existing immunisation register or stand-alone, can add substantial benefits to an HPV vaccination program. In Australia, the National HPV Vaccination Program Register supports the HPV vaccination program by providing information to consumers and providers about incomplete courses as well as est

[Buschke-Lowenstein tumor associated with scrotal melanoma. A case report].

Buschke-Lowenstein tumour (BLT) is a giant condyloma acumina, which is rare entity and represents only 1% of all populace. It is a rare viral disease, essentially transmitted by sexual intercourse, characterized by a potential for malignant transformation, invasion and recurrence after treatment. We report a case of BLT associated with perinea-scrotal melanoma. This association was never described in the literature. The purpose of our case report is to discuss the clinical and pathological appearances of these two entities and to outline the recent studies of molecular biology, which can expla

Diabetes and genital warts: an unhappy coalition.

Through clinical practice, it is often perceived that patients with diabetes are more likely to suffer from severe and recalcitrant warts. This study was set up to investigate if genital warts were more common in patients with diabetes and to determine if patients with diabetes and genital warts required more treatment than those without diabetes. Only female patients with diabetes and genital warts were investigated and were compared to the non-diabetic population. Results suggested that patients with diabetes had more extensive warts and recurrences. This study will hopefully further inform

Acquired lymphangiectasia ('lymphangioma circumscriptum') of the vulva: a report of eight cases.

AIMS: To present the clinico-pathological findings of eight cases of acquired vulval lymphangiectasia (AVL) with discussion of the terminology and differential diagnosis. METHODS: Vulvectomy or biopsy specimens from eight patients with AVL were reviewed. All patients had undergone surgery, lymphadenectomy and/or radiotherapy, most commonly for carcinoma of the cervix, up to 26 years prior to presentation with the lymphangiectatic lesions. Immunohistochemistry for CD31, CD34, D2-40, p53 and p16 was performed in each case. RESULTS: The original clinical and pathological diagnoses were most fre

Vulvar Intraepithelial Neoplasia 3 in Women Less Than 35 Years.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the outcome of women diagnosed with vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia (VIN) 3 at less than 35 years. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All cases of VIN 3 treated in women less than 35 years treated at Roswell Park Cancer Institute between January 1973 and January 2008 were reviewed. Medical records were reviewed for year of diagnosis, treatment modality, recurrence and/or progression, associated medical conditions, history of genital condyloma, smoking status, history of cervical pathology, and treatment. RESULTS: Thirty-one women were identified. The mean age at diagnosis was 29 y

Transmission of Chlamydia and genital warts during sleepwalking.

A boy aged 15 years infected a girl of 13 years with Chlamydia and genital warts. The boy has been engaged in sexual activities for the last four years. There was no dispute that the boy had had sex with the girl. He was prosecuted but acquitted by the Court on the ground of 'defence of sleepwalking'. This is the first case where sexually transmitted infections like Chlamydia and genital warts have been transmitted sexually through sleepwalking. This case also raises the issues of underage sex and issues of confidentiality.

Human papillomavirus vaccines and vaccine implementation.

Countries are now challenged by the rapid development of vaccines aimed at the primary prevention of infections. In the years to come, several vaccines will need to be considered as potential candidates in routine immunization programs. Recently, two new vaccines against two/four types of human papillomavirus (HPV) have been commercialized. Bivalent HPV 16 and 18 (Cervarix) and quadrivalent HPV 6, 11, 16 and 18 (Gardasil) vaccines are now extensively used in some countries. These vaccines will prevent infection and long-running complications, such as cervical cancer, other HPV-related cancers

Nitrative and oxidative DNA damage in cervical intraepithelial neoplasia associated with human papilloma virus infection.

Recently, it was proposed that inflammation plays an integral role in the development of human papilloma virus (HPV)-induced cervical cancer. The present study sought to examine if 8-nitroguanine, a mutagenic nitrative DNA lesion formed during inflammation, contributes to cervical carcinogenesis. We obtained biopsy specimens from 30 patients with cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN)1 (n = 9), CIN2 (n = 10), CIN3 (n = 6) and condyloma acuminatum (n = 5). We used immunohistochemistry to detect the formation of 8-nitroguanine and 8-oxo-7,8-dihydro-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-oxodG), an oxidative DNA

Verrucous carcinoma--an embarrassing problem?

Human papillomaviruses (HPVs) types 6 and 11 are usually associated with benign genital condylomata, but here we describe an extreme case of verrucous carcinoma associated with HPV 6 in a patient too embarrassed to seek early medical advice.

Epidemiology and natural history of genital human papillomavirus infection.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a ubiquitous human pathogen that causes cervical and other anogenital cancers as well as genital warts and recurrent respiratory papillomatosis. Human papillomavirus infection is most common among young, sexually active individuals, and it is so prevalent that approximately 75% to 80% of sexually active individuals will become infected in their lifetime. Currently, options are limited for both prevention of infection of patients with HPV-associated disease: infection can only be prevented with complete abstinence from all forms of sexual activity because condoms d
