The anatomy of the superior cerebellar artery: a detailed analysis.

BACKGROUND: The superior cerebellar artery (SCA) represents the most rostral branch of the vertebrobasilar circulation. A thorough understanding of the anatomy of the SCA and its surrounding structures is essential for the safe and effective performance of surgical procedures addressing compression syndromes, aneurysms, and ischemic infarctions. The aim of the study was to evaluate the anatomical variability of the SCA in the material from Central European individuals in order to refine and supplement the existing literature. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Computed tomography angiography results from

Malária incubada: a mixed methods analysis on knowledge and experiences on Plasmodium vivax and asymptomatic malaria infections in a hard-to-reach and mobile population in the Amazon.

BACKGROUND: As the Americas move towards malaria elimination, its circulation is increasingly concentrated in isolated communities with poor access to healthcare, and the silent human reservoir is a challenge (particularly for Plasmodium vivax). The deployment of tafenoquine for radical treatment is an important new asset. The CUREMA project evaluates a complex intervention aiming at malaria elimination in artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) communities of the Guiana Shield Region. A pre-intervention assessment was conducted to explore ASGM populations' knowledge and perceptions of as

Early Burst Suppression Similarity Association with Structural Brain Injury Severity on MRI After Cardiac Arrest.

BACKGROUND: Identical bursts on electroencephalography (EEG) are considered a specific predictor of poor outcomes in cardiac arrest, but its relationship with structural brain injury severity on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is not known. METHODS: This was a retrospective analysis of clinical, EEG, and MRI data from adult comatose patients after cardiac arrest. Burst similarity in first 72 h from the time of return of spontaneous circulation were calculated using dynamic time-warping (DTW) for bursts of equal (i.e., 500 ms) and varying (i.e., 100-500 ms) lengths and cross-correlation for b

Impact of preoperative left pulmonary artery stenting on the Fontan procedure: a retrospective multicentre study.

OBJECTIVES: Left pulmonary artery (LPA) or bifurcation stenoses at Fontan palliation can be very challenging to treat and may also require cardioplegia and aortic transection. Moreover, the low pressure of Fontan circulation and the bulkiness of the aorta increase the risk of a patch angioplasty collapse. Pre-Fontan LPA stenting of stenotic LPAs overcomes those drawbacks therefore the present study aimed to evaluate its advantageous impact on Fontan surgery. METHODS: A multicentre retrospective analysis was performed on 304 consecutive Fontan patients. The study population was divided into 2

Carbon nanotubes and central nervous system: Environmental risks, toxicological aspects and future perspectives.

Due to their morphological and physicochemical properties, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) enhance the structural properties of several materials and are produced in great volumes. The production and the manufacturing of CNTs-incorporated products can lead to the potential environmental release of CNTs. For these reasons, CNTs can represent a serious concern for human health. Humans are exposed to nanoparticles through inhalation, ingestion and skin uptake. After their entrance, the particles can reach the Central Nervous System (CNS) through three different pathways: the systemic, olfactory and trige

Red cell vesiculation--a common membrane physiologic event.

Loss of red blood cell membrane material in the form of microvesicles has been noted in sickle cells, in Ca++-loaded and adenosine triphosphate (ATP)-depleted normal red blood cells; and during storage of normal red blood cells. To further understand the vesiculation process, we have studied vesicles generated by a variety of perturbations of the red blood cell membrane. Vesicles were isolated by centrifugation at 30,000 X g from plasma of heparinized pathologic blood samples (sickle cell anemia, hemoglobin H disease, hereditary spherocytosis, hereditary elliptocytosis, and protein 4.1 deficie

Mapping the specificity of H3N2 strain-specific and cross-reactive human neutralizing antibodies elicited by the 2025-2026 influenza vaccine.

An H3N2 variant, named subclade K, continues to circulate widely during the 2025-2026 influenza season. This virus possesses a hemagglutinin (HA) protein that has eleven substitutions relative to the HA of the Northern Hemisphere 2025-2026 H3N2 vaccine strain. Many of these substitutions are in epitopes in well-characterized HA antigenic sites. Despite this, interim vaccine effectiveness studies indicate that the 2025-2026 influenza vaccine provides moderate protection against H3N2 subclade K infection. We previously reported that many individuals who received the 2025-2026 influenza vaccine p

Impact of adjuvant: Trivalent vaccine with quadrivalent-like protection against heterologous Yamagata-lineage influenza B virus.

As new vaccine technologies and platforms, such as nanoparticles and novel adjuvants, are developed to aid in the establishment of a universal influenza vaccine, studying traditional influenza split/subunit vaccines should not be overlooked. Commercially available vaccines are typically studied in terms of influenza A H1 and H3 viruses but influenza B viruses need to be examined as well. Thus, there is a need to both understand the limitations of split/subunit vaccines and develop strategies to overcome those limitations, particularly their ability to elicit cross-reactive antibodies to the co

Antibody-Based Biologics for CNS Disorders.

The blood-brain barrier (BBB) is permeable only to small lipophilic molecules, whereas hydrophilic nutrients, such as glucose and amino acids, cross the BBB via carrier-mediated transport systems. In contrast, circulating proteins do not cross the BBB. However, the BBB expresses receptors able to induce receptor-mediated transcytosis (RMT) of selective proteins across the BBB, as in the case of insulin, transferrin, and insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF1). This led to the hypothesis that the transport of protein-based biologics to the brain may be possible by targeting BBB receptors that induc

Structural basis for antibody cross-neutralization of Dengue and Zika viruses.

Safe and effective vaccines against co-circulating mosquito-borne orthoflaviviruses such as Zika virus (ZikV) and the four serotypes of Dengue virus (DenV1-4) must elicit broadly neutralizing antibodies (bnAbs) to prevent the risk of enhancement of infection by non-neutralizing antibodies. We recently discovered new orthoflavivirus-directed bnAbs, including F25.S02, which neutralizes DenV1-4 and ZikV with comparable or superior potency to the previously characterized E dimer epitope (EDE) bnAbs. Here, we used cryoEM and X-ray crystallography to understand the basis of cross-neutralization of F

Population Immunity to Influenza Neuraminidase: From Immune Imprinting to Pandemic Preparedness.

Neuraminidase (NA) is a major surface glycoprotein of influenza viruses that mediates the release of progeny virions from infected cells. Although both hemagglutinin (HA) and NA are targets of protective immune responses, current seasonal influenza vaccines are primarily standardized based on HA content, resulting in variable and often suboptimal induction of NA-specific immunity. Therefore, NA is subject to different immune pressures and exhibits distinct patterns of antigenic evolution. Increasing evidence suggests that neuraminidase-inhibiting (NAI) antibodies contribute to protection again

Revealing Novel-Strain-Specific and Shared Epitopes of Infectious Bronchitis Virus Spike Glycoprotein Using Chemical Linkage of Peptides onto Scaffolds Precision Epitope Mapping.

The avian coronavirus, infectious bronchitis virus (IBV), is an economically important infectious disease affecting chickens, with a diverse range of serotypes found globally. The major surface protein, spike (S), has high diversity between serotypes, and amino acid differences in the S1 sub-unit are thought to be responsible for poor cross-protection afforded by vaccination. Here, we attempt to address this, by using epitope mapping technology to identify shared and serotype-specific immunogenic epitopes of the S glycoprotein of three major circulating strains of IBV, M41, QX, and 4/91, via C

A single residue in influenza virus H2 hemagglutinin enhances the breadth of the B cell response elicited by H2 vaccination.

Conserved epitopes on the influenza hemagglutinin (HA) stem are an attractive target for universal vaccine strategies as they elicit broadly neutralizing antibodies. Such antibody responses to stem-specific epitopes have been extensively characterized for HA subtypes H1 and H5 in humans. H2N2 influenza virus circulated 50 years ago and represents a pandemic threat due to the lack of widespread immunity, but, unlike H1 and H5, the H2 HA stem contains Phe45HA2 predicted to sterically clash with HA stem-binding antibodies characterized to date. To understand the effect of Phe45HA2, we compared th

Flavivirus Cross-Reactivity to Dengue Nonstructural Protein 1 Antigen Detection Assays.

Dengue virus (DENV) and Zika virus (ZIKV) are flaviviruses of public health relevance. Both viruses circulate in the same endemic settings and acute infections generally manifest similar symptoms. This highlights the importance of accurate diagnosis for clinical management and outbreak control. One of the commonly used acute diagnostic markers for flaviviruses is nonstructural protein 1 (NS1). However, false positives due to antigenic cross-reactivity have been reported between DENV and ZIKV infections when using DENV NS1 antigen (NS1 Ag) detection assays in acute cases. Therefore, we investig

Molecular characterization of fowl aviadenoviruses species D and E associated with inclusion body hepatitis in chickens and falcons indicates possible cross-species transmission.

During the period from 2015 to 2017, frequent outbreaks of inclusion body hepatitis (IBH) were observed in broiler chickens and falcons in Saudi Arabia. Fifty samples were collected from both species. The histopathological examination and polymerase chain reaction confirmed the IBH infection in eight samples (five samples from chickens and three samples from falcons). The genomic sequence and phylogenetic analysis based on nucleotide and amino acid sequences of Saudi strains, reference fowl aviadenoviruses (FAdVs) and field viruses available in Genbank revealed that all investigated FAdVs clus
