A vision-language foundation model for the generation of realistic chest X-ray images.

The paucity of high-quality medical imaging datasets could be mitigated by machine learning models that generate compositionally diverse images that faithfully represent medical concepts and pathologies. However, large vision-language models are trained on natural images, and the diversity distribution of the generated images substantially differs from that of medical images. Moreover, medical language involves specific and semantically rich vocabulary. Here we describe a domain-adaptation strategy for large vision-language models that overcomes distributional shifts. Specifically, by leveragi

The association between atherosclerosis and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

Atherosclerosis (AS) is closely related to nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), which promotes and exacerbates the development of AS. However, it is uncertain how the precise underlying mechanism occurs. Here, we attempted to further explore the association underlying atherosclerosis and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease through integrated bioinformatics analysis. Microarray data for atherosclerosis and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease were retrieved from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. Weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) was used to identify the genes related

Effects of abdominal aortic aneurysm on long-term survival in lung cancer patients.

The major causes of death in patients with abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) are cardiovascular disease and cancer. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of AAA on long-term survival in lung cancer patients. All patient data with degenerative type AAA and lung cancer over 50 years of age during the period 2009 to 2018 was collected retrospectively from a National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) administrative database and matched to lung cancer patients without AAA by age, sex, metastasis, and other comorbidities. Mortality rate was compared between the groups. A total of 956 AAA

The OMOP common data model in Australian primary care data: Building a quality research ready harmonised dataset.

BACKGROUND: The use of routinely collected health data for secondary research purposes is increasingly recognised as a methodology that advances medical research, improves patient outcomes, and guides policy. This secondary data, as found in electronic medical records (EMRs), can be optimised through conversion into a uniform data structure to enable analysis alongside other comparable health metric datasets. This can be achieved with the Observational Medical Outcomes Partnership Common Data Model (OMOP-CDM), which employs a standardised vocabulary to facilitate systematic analysis across var

Cross-Modal self-supervised vision language pre-training with multiple objectives for medical visual question answering.

Medical Visual Question Answering (VQA) is a task that aims to provide answers to questions about medical images, which utilizes both visual and textual information in the reasoning process. The absence of large-scale annotated medical VQA datasets presents a formidable obstacle to training a medical VQA model from scratch in an end-to-end manner. Existing works have been using image captioning dataset in the pre-training stage and fine-tuning to downstream VQA tasks. Following the same paradigm, we use a collection of public medical image captioning datasets to pre-train multimodality models

Uni4Eye++: A General Masked Image Modeling Multi-Modal Pre-Training Framework for Ophthalmic Image Classification and Segmentation.

A large-scale labeled dataset is a key factor for the success of supervised deep learning in most ophthalmic image analysis scenarios. However, limited annotated data is very common in ophthalmic image analysis, since manual annotation is time-consuming and labor-intensive. Self-supervised learning (SSL) methods bring huge opportunities for better utilizing unlabeled data, as they do not require massive annotations. To utilize as many unlabeled ophthalmic images as possible, it is necessary to break the dimension barrier, simultaneously making use of both 2D and 3D images as well as alleviatin

Epileptic Seizure Detection with an End-to-End Temporal Convolutional Network and Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory Model.

Automatic seizure detection plays a key role in assisting clinicians for rapid diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy. In view of the parallelism of temporal convolutional network (TCN) and the capability of bidirectional long short-term memory (BiLSTM) in mining the long-range dependency of multi-channel time-series, we propose an automatic seizure detection method with a novel end-to-end TCN-BiLSTM model in this work. First, raw EEG is filtered with a 0.5-45 Hz band-pass filter, and the filtered data are input into the proposed TCN-BiLSTM network for feature extraction and classification. Post-

The database makes the poison: How the selection of datasets in QSAR models impacts toxicant prediction of higher tier endpoints.

As the United States and the European Union continue their steady march towards the acceptance of new approach methodologies (NAMs), we need to ensure that the available tools are fit for purpose. Critics will be well-positioned to caution against NAMs acceptance and adoption if the tools turn out to be inadequate. In this paper, we focus on Quantitative Structure Activity-Relationship (QSAR) models and highlight how the training database affects quality and performance of these models. Our analysis goes to the point of asking, "are the endpoints extracted from the experimental studies in the

HiCervix: An Extensive Hierarchical Dataset and Benchmark for Cervical Cytology Classification.

Cervical cytology is a critical screening strategy for early detection of pre-cancerous and cancerous cervical lesions. The challenge lies in accurately classifying various cervical cytology cell types. Existing automated cervical cytology methods are primarily trained on databases covering a narrow range of coarse-grained cell types, which fail to provide a comprehensive and detailed performance analysis that accurately represents real-world cytopathology conditions. To overcome these limitations, we introduce HiCervix, the most extensive, multi-center cervical cytology dataset currently avai

Characterization of the Limbal Epithelial Stem Cell Niche.

PURPOSE: Limbal epithelial stem cells (LESCs) reside within a LSC niche (LSCN). We recently identified that hyaluronan (HA) is a major constituent of the LSCN, and that HA is necessary for maintaining LESCs in the "stem cell" state, both in vitro and in vivo. Herein, we characterized the LSCN to identify key components of the HA-specific LSCN. METHODS: The cornea and limbal rim were dissected from mouse corneas, subjected to mRNA extraction, and sequenced using a NextSeq 500 (Illumina) and data processed using CLC Genomics Workbench 20 (Qiagen) and the STRING database to identify key componen

Etiology of gender incongruence and its levels of evidence: A scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Gender Incongruence refers to the discordance between biological sex and gender identity. Although it is possible to find literature reviews about the etiology of Gender Incongruence, almost all of these correspond to non-systematic narrative reviews, so they do not make explicit the methodology used in the collection and analysis of sources, even less its levels of evidence. In order to remedy this, we will conduct a scoping review to answer the question: what are the factors associated with gender incongruence and what level of evidence is there for each factor in the scientifi

Impact of Porphyromonas gingivalis-odontogenic infection on the pathogenesis of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

Aim: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is characterized by diffuse hepatic steatosis and has quickly risen to become the most prevalent chronic liver disease. Its incidence is increasing yearly, but the pathogenesis is still not fully understood. Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis) is a major pathogen widely prevalent in periodontitis patients. Its infection has been reported to be a risk factor for developing insulin resistance, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), and metabolic syndrome. The aim of this review is to evaluate the association be
