Impaired spermatogenesis: an unrecognized feature of cartilage-hair hypoplasia.

BACKGROUND: Cartilage-hair hypoplasia (CHH), an autosomal recessive chondrodysplasia, is characterized by severe growth failure, hypoplastic hair, impaired immunity, and deficient erythropoiesis. These features may result from a generalized defect in cell proliferation. AIM: In order to investigate whether an impairment of cell proliferation is present in spermatogenesis, we analysed fertility in a clinical and laboratory study of adult males with CHH. METHODS: Eleven adult males (median age 29 years, range 21-49 years) with CHH were included in the study. The patients were examined clinical

[A case of transsphenoidal meningoencephalocele].

A 6-year-old boy was sent to us due to basal meningoencephalocele detected by MRI. He had had a past history of strabismus and morning glory syndrome since 6 months of age, as well as hypopituitary dwarfism since he was 3 years old. On admission, physical examination revealed hypertelorism and left coloboma. Laryngoscopic examination revealed a round mass covered by normal nasal mucose in the midline of the tegmen of the choana. X-ray tomogram and CT scan demonstrated an isodense mass protruding into the nasopharyngeal cavity through a bony defect of the sella turcica. Right carotid angiogram …

Craniofacial pattern similarities and additional orofacial findings in siblings with the Robinow syndrome.

This study elucidates a craniofacial profile pattern similarity among four family members with the Robinow syndrome. Using eight angular measurements, these profiles (created from standard scores and correlation coefficients (rz) among siblings) exceed 0.80. Dental examination of these same children demonstrates an unusual incisal edge morphology that could comprise one additional identifying feature in this disorder. The accumulation of findings in this study, along with those previously reported, emphasizes midline craniofacial involvement in the Robinow syndrome.

The Dubowitz syndrome--one more case.

A boy with the Dubowitz syndrome is presented. This autosomal recessive disorder is characterized by variable degrees of intrauterine and postnatal growth retardation, microcephaly, mild mental retardation, hyperactivity, "eczema", characteristic facial appearance and combination of minor abnormalities. Thirty-eight cases of this syndrome have been reported in the literature. Symptoms and difficulties in differential diagnosis are discussed.

Discovery and importance of zinc in human nutrition.

The present explosion in knowledge of zinc has been the result of several factors, the major ones being the recognition of the important role of zinc in human health and diseases, its vital functions in biochemical reactions, and the technological advances that make it feasible to quantitate this essential trace element in biological fluids. Deficiency of zinc in humans due to nutritional factors and several disease states has now been recognized. The high phytate content of cereal proteins is known to decrease the availability of zinc; thus, the prevalence of zinc deficiency is likely to be h

Brief clinical report: short rib-polydactyly syndrome, Majewski type.

We describe a baby with external and internal anomalies of the Majewski form of the short rib-polydactyly (SRP) syndromes. Previously unreported abnormal vertebral bodies, delayed ossification of the sternum and fibulae, and a diencephalic hamartoma are noted. These abnormalities and minimal histologic abnormality at the chondro-osseous junction suggest that this syndrome may be heterogeneous or more variable than previously known.

Obstructive cardiomyopathy in a male dwarf with cryptorchidism.

Obstructive cardiomyopathy has been reported in cases of male and female Turner phenotype with normal chromosomes. We report here a case of a male dwarf with bilateral undescended testes and biventricular obstructive cardiomyopathy. Clinical features included choreoathetoid movements, chorioretinitis, bilateral nystagmus, and unusual red color of the hair, associated with some features of Turner phenotype. Endocrine studies were normal except for a lack of thyrotrophic stimulating hormone (TSH) stimulation. Propranolol removed the gradient during cardiac catheterization and relieved the exerti
