Bell's palsy is a common disorder involving facial nerve. Branches of the facial nerve innervating auriculares muscles could be involved in patients with Bell's palsy. Functions of auriculares muscles were degenerated in the most of human beings, therefore, paralysis of the auriculares muscles in patients with Bell's palsy may be unnoticeable. However, unilateral loss of ear wiggling may be an interesting sign of Bell's palsy in natural ear wigglers who can move their ears voluntarily. The mechanism and muscles responsible for the ear wiggling and the innervations to these muscles were illustr…

OBJECTIVE: To explore the technique of "two-flap" in ear reconstruction.
METHOD: Quantitative tissue expansions were used in the mastoid area in the first stage. After the final injection, there was 1 month of sustaining time. Expanded skin flap and unexpanded fascia flap were designed in the second stage, so the "two-flap" technique was used in the ear reconstruction. From January 2004 to December 2008, 1427 patients of microtia were treated using "two-flap" technique.
RESULT: The expanded skin flap could show the fine structures of the reconstructed ears. The reconstructed ears had vivid c…

As more and more substances have been shown in preclinical studies to be capable of preventing damage to the inner ear from exposure to noise, ototoxic drugs, ischemia, infection, inflammation, mechanical trauma and other insults, it is becoming very important to develop feasible and safe methods for the targeted delivery of drugs to specific regions in the inner ear. Recently developed methods for sampling perilymph from the cochlea have overcome major technical problems that have distorted previous pharmacokinetic studies of the ear. These measurements show that drug distribution in perilymp…

The aim of the study was to describe computed tomography (CT) findings in middle ear cholesteatoma in pediatric patients. A cohort of 32 children with cholesteatoma (3-14 years old) entered the study. From them, 30 presented acquired cholesteatoma (AC), and 2 presented congenital cholesteatoma. All of the children were investigated using CT before surgery of the middle ear and mastoid. Computed tomography was performed with 1- or 2-mm axial and coronal sections of both temporal bones. Nineteen children with AC (63.3%) revealed a diffuse soft-tissue density isodense with muscle, whereas in 6 of…

OBJECTIVE: The major goal of this study was to examine differences in the middle ear mechano-acoustical properties of normal ears and ears with surgically confirmed otosclerosis using conventional and multifrequency tympanometry (MFT) as well as energy reflectance (ER). Second, we sought to compare ER, standard tympanometry, and MFT in their ability to distinguish healthy and otosclerotic ears examining both overall test performance (sensitivity and specificity) and receiver- operating characteristic analyses.
DESIGN: Sixty-two normal-hearing adults and 28 patients diagnosed with otosclerosis…

Skin disorders of the external ear are common. Although audiologists will not necessarily treat these conditions, it is important for them to be aware of these disorders and refer patients to a specialist in some instances. This report summarizes eight of the most commonly encountered skin conditions with an emphasis on recognition and appropriate referral. The cutaneous disorders of the external ear discussed in the article are divided into benign, premalignant, and malignant groups.

UNLABELLED: Most of deafness have a neuro-sensory origin and are characterized by a loss of hair cells and auditory neurons in the spiral ganglion. At the moment, hearing aids are the only treatment available. To restore hearing in a patient suffering from deafness, it is necessary to study the mechanisms that might lead to the regeneration of neurosensory structures of the inner ear.
HAIR CELL REGENERATION: The production of hair cells and supporting cells is terminated during embryonic development of the cochlea in mammals. However, several recent arguments suggest that new hair cells can b…

Dysfunctions of the inner ear such as hearing impairment due to noise exposure or presbycusis and vertigo are often caused by loss of hair cells in the sensory epithelium. There is still no specific therapy, just technical aids. Options for protecting and regenerating hair cells are explained here. The inhibition of apoptosis via caspases is presently the main target of research. They are involved in damage caused by aminoglycosides, cisplatin, or noise exposure. Bcl-2, growth factors, and oxidative stress are discussed. In regeneration the transdifferentiation of supporting cells to hair cell…

OBJECTIVE: To summarize different treatments of the residual ear in auricular reconstruction, to investigate the reasonable applications of the residual ear.
METHODS: From September 2005 to July 2006, 128 patients (79 males, 49 females; aging 5-21 years with an average of 11 years) with unilateral microtia underwent the staged repair. In the patients, there were 44 cases of left-unilaterally microtia and 84 cases of right-unilaterally microtia. The residual ears looked like peanut in 56 patients, like sausage in 35 patients, like boat in 27 patients, and like shells in 10 patients. Among all …

This study aimed to investigate changes experienced by children during the pre- and postoperative periods of prominent ear corrective surgery. A total of 30 patients with prominent ears, sometimes called "lop ears" or "cup ears," ranging in age from 6 to 14 years were consecutively enrolled in this study. Half of the patients (n = 15, 50%) were male. The inclusion criteria specified children with prominent ears and reports of evident anatomic deformity. Clinical evaluations, routine laboratory tests, and interviews were performed in the pre- and postoperative periods. To assess the dissatisfac…

A 6-year-old girl was referred to The Johns Hopkins Hospital for a suspected congenital cholesteatoma. The lesion was determined to be a recurrence of a nasopharyngeal hairy polyp removed in the postnatal period. Simple excision is normally regarded as curative: malignant transformation and local recurrence do not occur. Our case is exceptional in that incomplete excision of the nasopharyngeal polyp was followed by re-growth and extension into the middle ear over a 6-year period. Thus, not all hairy polyps are static lesions. Indeed, this case documents progressive growth of a hairy polyp duri…

Recurrent exacerbation in chronic recalcitrant external otitis (EO) often warrants multidisciplinary treatment and collaboration with a derm … on a 6-point scale. The short-term results after topical application of tacrolimus (V2) showed a clear improvement in 85% of the patients (N = 45) and significant drop in severity scores for all clinical parameters (p < 0.001). The long-term follow-up studies (V3) revealed that a one-time treatment cycle led to complete remission in 46% of patients ( …

In this case report we describe a patient with agenesis of the corpus callosum and asymmetric bilateral sensorineural hearing loss, who was found to have a bilateral inner ear dysplasia. Both of these anomalies have been associated with different members of the Pax gene family. However, to our knowledge this is the first report demonstrating the coexistence of these two unusual entities. By uncovering the inner ear malformation, we are able to better counsel this patient with regard to avoidance of high-risk activities such as contact sports and recommend prophylactic vaccination for meningiti…

The most common forms of severe hearing loss and deafness are related to morphological changes in the cochlea. Many individuals with such forms of hearing disorders have received cochlear implants. It has been assumed that preservation of spiral ganglion cells is important for success of cochlear implants. Preservation of ganglion cells is negatively correlated with the duration of the hearing loss. It has, however, not been possible to reveal a relationship between the degree of survival of spiral ganglion cells and performance of cochlear implants. It is important to understand the histopath…

BACKGROUND: Ear surgery is urgently needed in northern Namibia as many children cannot even be provided with hearing aids due to chronically discharging ears, not to forget possible complications of untreated cholesteatoma.
METHODS: During the two "ear camps" in 2003 and 2004, 61 children (median age 12 years) and one adult were operated, mainly for (sub)total defects of the tympanic membrane (81 tympanoplasties).
PATIENTS AND RESULTS: We performed tympanoplasty type I in 33 cases and type III in 48 cases, mostly using autogenous ossicles and titanium prostheses. In 39 cases, an antrotomy or…
