Experimental and ALO-optimized machine learning interpretable models for pharmaceutical adsorption onto raw bentonite.

Pharmaceutical contamination of aquatic systems poses an increasing environmental concern due to the persistence, bioactivity, and incomplete removal of these compounds by conventional wastewater treatment processes. This study investigates the adsorptive removal of three structurally distinct pharmaceuticals: ketotifen fumarate (KF), doxycycline hyclate (DXC), and nystatin (Nyst), using raw bentonite (RB). By combining batch experiments with an interpretable machine learning (ML) framework, adsorption kinetics, equilibrium, and thermodynamics were evaluated. Additionally, four Ant Lion Optimi

Advancing brain age estimation: normative deviation mapping (NDM) for sensitive detection of pathological aging.

Brain age is a valuable neuroimaging-based biomarker for assessing brain health, typically estimated using machine learning (ML) models. However, ML approaches suffer from inherent bias, requiring post-hoc correction, and may mask age-related biological variation, limiting their sensitivity to detect subtle biological aging. To overcome these limitations, we proposed a normative deviation mapping (NDM) model as an alternative to conventional ML. We analyzed MRI-derived volumes of 223 brain regions from 10,539 participants (aged 4-98 years). The NDM model assumes a normal distribution for age-s

Machine Learning-Guided Survival Prediction and Treatment Sequencing in Advanced Soft Tissue Sarcoma Beyond Second-Line Therapy: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

INTRODUCTION: Evidence guiding the optimal sequencing of later-line systemic therapy in advanced soft tissue sarcoma (STS) remains limited. The aim of this study was to identify prognostic factors for overall survival (OS) beyond second-line treatment and to explore therapy sequencing in routine clinical practice. METHODS: A total of 90 patients with advanced STS receiving third-line or later systemic therapy were retrospectively analyzed. Extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) was used to identify clinical predictors of 1-year OS. The most influential variables were subsequently evaluated in mu

Monthly Soil Respiration in China's Forests: Spatiotemporal Patterns and Drivers Over 21 Years.

Forests play a critical role as terrestrial carbon sinks in mitigating climate change. However, accurate quantification of soil respiration (Rs)-the primary CO2 efflux from forests-remains challenging due to existing studies' overreliance on annual-scale estimates, which obscure fine-scale spatiotemporal dynamics and key drivers of Rs. Here, we developed a 500 m resolution monthly Rs dataset for China's forests (2000-2020) using remote sensing data and a geographically weighted machine learning model. A geographically weighted extreme gradient boosting model achieved the highest accuracy in pr

Interpretable machine learning models based on CMR radiomics for predicting left ventricular diastolic dysfunction in patients with metabolic-associated steatotic liver disease and type 2 diabetes mellitus.

BACKGROUND: Obesity-induced left ventricular diastolic dysfunction (LVDD), associated with ectopic fat and dysfunctional epicardial adipose tissue (EAT), is emerging as a key research area due to its increasing prevalence and links to metabolic-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). This underscores the importance of early risk assessment and intervention to prevent the progression of LVDD. We developed an interpretable machine learning (ML) model combining cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) radiomics and clinical data to assess LVDD risk in MASLD/T2DM pa

Unveiling nonlinear drivers of ecosystem service bundles and dynamic buffer zones for precise watershed governance: A coupling framework of SOM and XGBoost-SHAP in the Yellow River Basin.

Precise ecological functional zoning and an understanding of its underlying drivers are fundamental for sustainable watershed management, yet traditional static zoning often fails to capture the spatial transitions and nonlinear feedbacks within social-ecological systems. This study develops an integrated framework to identify ecosystem service bundle (ESB) and quantify ecological buffer zones in the Yellow River Basin (YRB). By coupling the Self-Organizing Map (SOM) with the eXtreme Gradient Boosting-SHapley Additive exPlanations (XGBoost-SHAP) machine learning model, we analyze the nonlinear

Adverse Pregnancy Outcomes in Women With Immune Abnormalities: Machine Learning Model Development and Validation Using First-Trimester Sonographic Features.

BACKGROUND: The maintenance and progression of pregnancy rely on immune homeostasis at the maternal-fetal interface. However, pregnancy complicated by autoimmune abnormalities can disrupt this balance and significantly increase the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes (APOs). OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to (1) develop an interpretable predictive tool for APOs in patients with immune abnormalities and (2) interpret the models using Shapley additive explanations (SHAP) values. METHODS: This study retrospectively analyzed clinical data from 288 patients with autoimmune abnormalities at Yichang Ce

Reachable Workspace as a Clinical Outcome for Upper Extremity Function: A Narrative Review.

Motion sensing technology can be utilized to capture detailed upper extremity (UE) motion to reconstruct an individual's three-dimensional (3D) reachable workspace (RWS). The RWS can be quantified as relative surface area (RSA), providing an innovative surrogate measure to assess UE mobility and function. Numerous studies have shown that RSA can reliably distinguish between healthy and impaired UE function and also is able to detect clinically relevant longitudinal changes, with sufficient sensitivity to detect small differences even in slowly-progressive conditions. After more than a decade o

Early mortality prediction of prognosis in cardiac arrest patients using machine learning: Development, external validation, and explainability with SHAP.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac arrest (CA) is a major global health challenge, accounting for a significant proportion of deaths and healthcare resource utilization. However, due to the lack of interpretability, most predictive models for CA mortality have not been applied in clinical practice. We aimed to construct an interpretable model for predicting in-hospital mortality for CA patients in the intensive care units (ICU). METHODS: Data from the MIMIC-IV database were split, with 70% allocated to the training set and 30% to the internal validation set. The eICU database served as an external validatio

Reply to the letter to the editor: "Machine learning model for predicting preeclampsia-related adverse outcomes".

We thank Liu et al. for their constructive comments on our article reporting the internal and external validation of a reduced-feature machine learning model for the prediction of preeclampsia-related adverse outcomes. The letter raises four points, which we address in turn. Regarding calibration and clinical utility, we generated calibration curves for the gradient-boosted tree model in both cohorts. Neither cohort shows a systematic, clinically concerning miscalibration pattern; deviations are concentrated at the extremes of the risk distribution, where observations are fewest. Brier scores

XGBoost Outperforms Traditional Transplant Regulatory Models Based on Regression.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether machine learning (ML) models, specifically Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), improve the prediction of graft and patient survival compared with Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients (SRTR) regression models across heart, lung, liver, and kidney transplants. BACKGROUND: Accurate prediction of post-transplant outcomes is essential for organ allocation and regulatory oversight. Current SRTR models rely on regression techniques that may not capture complex donor-recipient interactions. ML offers the potential for improved predictive accuracy. METHODS: A
