Severe feeding disorder and malnutrition in 2 children with autism.

Leanna, a 10-year-old girl with autism, was hospitalized for severe malnutrition and 20 pound weight loss secondary to reduced intake over 4 months. Her food choices became increasingly restrictive to the point where she only ate certain types and brands of foods. She gradually stopped drinking and developed severe constipation and encopresis. A new behavior of collecting saliva in her mouth and spitting onto napkins also emerged. Vital signs and electrolytes were normal on admission. A nasogastric tube was placed because she refused to eat. A behavior modification plan was implemented that aw

Fluoxetine effects on behavior and adult hippocampal neurogenesis in female C57BL/6J mice across the estrous cycle.

RATIONALE: Some mood disorders, such as major depressive disorder, are more prevalent in women than in men. However, historically preclinical studies in rodents have a lower inclusion rate of females than males, possibly due to the fact that behavior can be affected by the estrous cycle. Several studies have demonstrated that chronic antidepressant treatment can decrease anxiety-associated behaviors and increase adult hippocampal neurogenesis in male rodents. OBJECTIVE: Very few studies have looked at the effects of antidepressants on behavior and neurogenesis across the estrous cycle in natu

Unlimited sucrose consumption during adolescence generates a depressive-like phenotype in adulthood.

Depression is highly prevalent worldwide, but its etiology is not fully understood. An overlooked possible contributor to the epidemic of depression is feeding styles, particularly at early age when the brain is intensely changing. We have previously reported that unlimited sucrose consumption during adolescence leads to enduring changes in brain reward function. Here, we tested the hypothesis that sucrose consumption during adolescence would lead to a 'depressive-like' phenotype. Adolescent male rats were given unlimited access to 5% sucrose in their home cages from postnatal day 30 to postna

BDNF-Val66Met variant and adolescent stress interact to promote susceptibility to anorexic behavior in mice.

There is an urgent need to identify therapeutic targets for anorexia nervosa (AN) because current medications do not impact eating behaviors … ior. We found that the Val66Met genotype markedly increases the likelihood and severity of abnormal feeding behavior triggered by CR, but only when CR is imposed in the peri-pubertal period. Incidence of anorexic behavior in our model is dependent on juvenile exposure to social stress and can be extinguished by adolescent handling, but is discordant from anxiety-l …

Abdominal surgery decreases food-reinforced operant responding in rats: relevance of incisional pain.

BACKGROUND: Establishment of early oral nutrition after surgery is associated with a decrease in morbidity and mortality. The following studies were undertaken to determine how surgery influences food-reinforced behavior in rats and to determine the relevance of afferent input from the incision site on this behavior. METHODS: Rats were trained to press a lever for food pellets to assess the effects of various abdominal surgical manipulations. Operant requirements and food availability were also manipulated. The effects of wound infiltration with bupivacaine and denervation of the abdominal mu

Effect of behavioural change communication through women development army on optimal complementary feeding practice among children aged 6-23 months in Southwest Ethiopia: a cluster randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Optimal development and growth in children are primarily determined by dietary practice during the first 24 months of life. However, in low-income countries, especially in sub-Saharan Africa, ensuring adequate nutrition and maternal nutritional knowledge are challenging. As a result, it is a major public health issue in Ethiopia. Therefore, it is essential to address feeding practices and knowledge gaps through behavior change communication. This study assessed the effect of behaviour change communication through the women's development army on complementary feeding practices among

Energy state guides reward seeking via an extended amygdala to lateral hypothalamus pathway.

Impaired regulation of food intake underlies numerous health problems, including obesity and type 2 diabetes, yet how brain systems controlling reward seeking become dysregulated to promote overeating is unknown. Glutamatergic neurons of the lateral hypothalamic area (LHA) are thought to act as a brake on feeding, which is dysregulated during diet-induced obesity. These neurons receive input from the extended amygdala, including the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST). However, the circuit mechanisms underlying the ability of this pathway to control feeding behavior and how they contrib…

Mechanism of muscle atrophy in a normal-weight rat model of type 2 diabetes established by using a soft-pellet diet.

Dietary factors such as food texture affect feeding behavior and energy metabolism, potentially causing obesity and type 2 diabetes. We previously found that rats fed soft pellets (SPs) were neither hyperphagic nor overweight but demonstrated glucose intolerance, insulin resistance, and hyperplasia of pancreatic β-cells. In the present study, we investigated the mechanism of muscle atrophy in rats that had been fed SPs on a 3-h time-restricted feeding schedule for 24 weeks. As expected, the SP rats were normal weight; however, they developed insulin resistance, glucose intolerance, and fat acc…

CerS6-dependent ceramide synthesis in hypothalamic neurons promotes ER/mitochondrial stress and impairs glucose homeostasis in obese mice.

Dysregulation of hypothalamic ceramides has been associated with disrupted neuronal pathways in control of energy and glucose homeostasis. H … eficiency in neurons expressing pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC) or steroidogenic factor 1 (SF-1) alters feeding behavior and alleviates the adverse metabolic effects of HFD feeding on insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance. POMC-expressing cell-selective deletion of CerS6 prevents the diet-induced alterations of mitochondrial morphology and improves cellular leptin …

Traumatic xylophagia leading to foreign body removal and tracheostomy in the setting of postpartum psychosis.

Postpartum psychosis (PPP) is a severe mood disorder following childbirth that rarely leads to injurious or suicidal behavior. This report illustrates otolaryngologic intervention for pharyngeal laceration and airway instability following traumatic foreign body ingestion in the setting of PPP. A 25-year-old woman with PPP presented with hemoptysis after attempting suicide by traumatically forcing tree branches into her oropharynx. Imaging revealed pneumomediastinum, and flexible laryngoscopy and esophagoscopy showed a large foreign body (tree branch) extending from the hypopharynx to the gastr

Arboviruses: How Saliva Impacts the Journey from Vector to Host.

Arthropod-borne viruses, referred to collectively as arboviruses, infect millions of people worldwide each year and have the potential to cause severe disease. They are predominately transmitted to humans through blood-feeding behavior of three main groups of biting arthropods: ticks, mosquitoes, and sandflies. The pathogens harbored by these blood-feeding arthropods (BFA) are transferred to animal hosts through deposition of virus-rich saliva into the skin. Sometimes these infections become systemic and can lead to neuro-invasion and life-threatening viral encephalitis. Factors intrinsic to t…

Chronic Powder Diet After Weaning Induces Sleep, Behavioral, Neuroanatomical, and Neurophysiological Changes in Mice.

The purpose of this study is to clarify the effects of chronic powder diet feeding on sleep patterns and other physiological/anatomical changes in mice. C57BL/6 male mice were divided into two groups from weaning: a group fed with solid food (SD) and a group fed with powder food (PD), and sleep and physiological and anatomical changes were compared between the groups. PD exhibited less cranial bone structure development and a significant weight gain. Furthermore, these PD mice showed reduced number of neurogenesis in the hippocampus. Sleep analysis showed that PD induced attenuated diurnal sle

The effect of dietary restriction on gastrin secretion in the obese Zucker rat.

It has been hypothesized that G-cell hyperplasia secondary to increased food consumption in the obese Zucker rat was responsible for the hyp … ese animals were not significantly lower than those of obese animals fed ad libitum. Thus, abnormal feeding behavior in the obese phenotype cannot be directly related to gastrin hypersecretion and G-cell hyperplasia is not the primary cause of hypergastrinemia.

Regional mu-opioid receptor binding in insular cortex is decreased in bulimia nervosa and correlates inversely with fasting behavior.

UNLABELLED: The endogenous opioid system of the brain has been implicated in feeding behavior. Abnormal repeated activation of this system may constitute a neural substrate for the compulsive eating behavior observed in bulimia nervosa. This study examined the binding potential of the brain mu-opioid receptor (mu-OR) in bulimia nervosa. METHODS: Eight women with bulimia nervosa and 8 female controls underwent brain MRI followed by (11)C-carfentanil PET. Voxel-based methods were used to assess group differences in mu-OR binding between controls and bulimic subjects and to correlate mu-OR bindi…
