Registration and difference analysis of corresponding mammogram images.

An automated technique is proposed for identifying differences between corresponding mammogram images. The technique recovers an approximate deformation between a pair of mammograms based on identifying corresponding features across the two images. The registration process is completed using an unwarping technique for transforming one image into the coordinate system of the other. A difference image is generated using intensity-weighted subtraction in order to identify regions of large difference. Evaluation of the technique is performed using 124 bilateral image pairs which contain a total of

Evaluation of bile reflux in HIDA images based on fluid mechanics.

We propose a new method to help physicians assess, using a hepatobiliary iminodiacetic acid scan image, whether or not there is bile reflux into the stomach. The degree of bile reflux is an important index for clinical diagnosis of stomach diseases. The proposed method applies image-processing technology combined with a hydrodynamic model to determine the extent of bile reflux or whether the duodenum is also folded above the stomach. This condition in 2D dynamic images suggests that bile refluxes into the stomach, when endoscopy shows no bile reflux. In this study, we used optical flow to anal

Semi-Supervised Breast Lesion Segmentation Using Confidence-Ranked Features and Bi-Level Prototypes.

Automated lesion segmentation through breast ultrasound (BUS) images is an essential prerequisite in computer-aided diagnosis. However, the task of breast segmentation remains challenging, due to the time-consuming and labor-intensive process of acquiring precise labeled data, as well as severely ambiguous lesion boundaries and low contrast in BUS images. In this article, we propose a novel semi-supervised breast segmentation framework based on confidence-ranked features and bi-level prototypes (CoBiNet) to alleviate these issues. Our outputs are derived from two branches: classifier and proje

Video-Based Compensatory Movement Assessment for Supporting Upper Limb Rehabilitation Evaluation.

Understanding the characteristics of upper limb movements plays an essential role in motivating and helping patients with rehabilitation. Currently in clinical fields, therapists observe and evaluate the patient's movements qualitatively. In this study, our objective is to quantitatively evaluate upper limb function by quantifying the quality of upper limb movements. Specifically, we introduce a novel metric referred to as the "compensatory degree" which can be generated from videos of rehabilitation movements. The results of a verification experiment show that the compensatory degree is stron

Artificial intelligence for detecting traumatic intracranial haemorrhage with CT: A workflow-oriented implementation.

The objective of this study was to assess the performance of an artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm in detecting intracranial haemorrhages (ICHs) on non-contrast CT scans (NCCT). Another objective was to gauge the department's acceptance of said algorithm. Surveys conducted at three and nine months post-implementation revealed an increase in radiologists' acceptance of the AI tool with an increasing performance. However, a significant portion still preferred an additional physician given comparable cost. Our findings emphasize the importance of careful software implementation into a robust

Chaos-MLP: Chaotic Transform MLP-Like Architecture for Medical Images Multi-Label Recognition Task.

The theory of "three-stage prevention" in view of the body constitution is the key technology of modern Chinese medicine for "Preventive Treatment of Diseases". In particular, automated body constitution recognition (BCR) is an integral part of intelligent Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), which is extremely valuable for disease prevention and diagnosis. Actually, BCR is a challenging multi-label recognition task by the TCM composite constitution theory. First, two new databases are constructed, one is a multi-label facial body constitution (MFBC), and another is a multi-label tongue body co

Involution Transformer Based U-Net for Landmark Detection in Ultrasound Images for Diagnosis of Infantile DDH.

The B-mode ultrasound based computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) has demonstrated its effectiveness for diagnosis of Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip (DDH) in infants, which can conduct the Graf's method by detecting landmarks in hip ultrasound images. However, it is still necessary to explore more valuable information around these landmarks to enhance feature representation for improving detection performance in the detection model. To this end, a novel Involution Transformer based U-Net (IT-UNet) network is proposed for hip landmark detection. The IT-UNet integrates the efficient involution oper

Three-Dimensional Printing of the Nasal Cavities for Clinical Experiments.

3D printing has produced many beneficial applications for surgery. The technique´s applicability in replicating nasal cavity anatomy for clinical use has not been studied. Our aim was to determine whether 3D printing could realistically replicate the nasal cavities and the airflow passing through them from a clinical point of view. We included Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) scans of five patients with symptoms of chronic nasal congestion. These CBCT scans were used to print plastic 3D prints of the nasal cavities, which were also CBCT scanned and the measurements were compared. The resul

High-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography in children with osteogenesis imperfecta.

Bone health in children with osteogenesis imperfecta is monitored using radiographs and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, which have limitations. High-resolution peripheral quantitative CT can non-invasively derive bone microarchitectural data. Children with severe osteogenesis imperfecta have fragile deformed bones, and positioning for this scan can be difficult. We assessed the feasibility of high-resolution peripheral quantitative CT in nine children aged 9-15 years with osteogenesis imperfecta and compared results with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and with healthy controls. All nine re

Dual-energy CT in musculoskeletal trauma.

Dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) combines the advantages of conventional CT with the ability to detect bone marrow oedema (BMO), which was previously limited to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). By analysing DECT virtual non-calcium (VNCa) maps, radiologists can improve the detection of subtle and occult fractures and approximate the acuity/healing of fractures of indeterminate age. This review highlights the role of DECT in the assessment of musculoskeletal trauma, particularly among elderly, post-menopausal women and those at risk for osteoporosis. DECT is especially useful in investig
