Correlation between mild behavioral impairment and peripheral blood biomarkers in patients with mild cognitive impairment.

BACKGROUND: Mild behavioral impairment (MBI) refers to the neurobehavioral symptoms observed in older adults that may be potential risk factors for neurodegenerative diseases. While a significant number studies have explored the association between cerebrospinal fluid and MBI, only a few have examined the connection between plasma biomarkers and MBI. AIM: To examine the prevalence of MBI in healthy older adults (HOAs) and individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), as well as the association between MBI and plasma biomarkers of Alzheimer's disease (AD). METHODS: We enrolled a total of

Assessing the stability of responding of male mice in the touchscreen 5 choice serial reaction time task: Focus on premature responding.

The five-choice serial reaction time task (5CSRTT) is a test of attention that provides a well-validated ancillary measure of impulsive action, measured by premature responses. The task has been adapted for mice in touchscreen operant boxes, which is thought to offer improved test-retest reliability. Few studies have assessed the long-term stability of performance, including premature responding in this version of the task. We used the touchscreen 5CSRTT to conduct longitudinal testing of stability of premature responding following repeated behavioral and pharmacological manipulations. Male C5

Sex moderates family history of alcohol use disorder and childhood maltreatment effects on an fMRI stop-signal task.

Childhood maltreatment (CM) and a family history (FH) of alcohol use disorder (AUD) are each associated with increased impulsivity. However, their unique or shared brain targets remain unknown. Furthermore, both CM and FH demonstrate sex-dependent effects on brain and behavior. We hypothesized that CM and FH interact in brain regions involved in impulsivity with sex-dependent effects. 144 first-year college students (18-19 years old) with varying experiences of CM and/or FH but without current AUD performed an fMRI stop-signal task. We tested interactions between FH, CM, and sex on task perfor

Mild Behavioral Impairment Is Associated With Atrophy of Entorhinal Cortex and Hippocampus in a Memory Clinic Cohort.

OBJECTIVES: Mild behavioral impairment (MBI) is a syndrome describing late-onset persistent neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) in non-demented older adults. Few studies to date have investigated the associations of MBI with structural brain changes. Our aim was to explore structural correlates of NPS in a non-demented memory clinic sample using the Mild Behavioral Impairment Checklist (MBI-C) that has been developed to measure MBI. METHODS: One hundred sixteen non-demented older adults from the Czech Brain Aging Study with subjective cognitive concerns were classified as subjective cognitive dec

Reduced Social Network Drinking is Associated with Improved Response Inhibition in Women During Early Recovery from Alcohol Use Disorders: A Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Social support for recovery from alcohol use disorders (AUDs) is associated with improvements in self-reported impulsive behavior in individuals treated for AUDs. We build on these findings using a behavioral task-based measure of response inhibition, a well-defined component of impulsivity, to examine the association of disinhibition with alcohol-specific social network characteristics during early recovery. METHODS: Women (n = 28) were recruited from treatment for AUD within 3 to 4 weeks of their last drink and were assessed at baseline and again 3 months later. Outcome measures…

Neurobehavioral correlates of inhibitory control in youth at-risk for early low-level alcohol use initiation: neuroimaging findings from the ABCD study.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescent alcohol experimentation is a rising concern given its links to future problematic drug use. Difficulty with inhibitory control (i.e., the ability to suppress unwanted behaviors) is a well-known risk factor for early alcohol use onset. Nevertheless, little is known about the neurobiology of inhibitory control during early development (i.e., preadolescence), especially in relation to minimal early low-level alcohol use. The current study will reveal neural and behavioral differences in inhibitory control that differentiate youth will go on to engage in low-level alcohol

Posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms, emotion dysregulation, and aggressive behavior among incarcerated methamphetamine users.

OBJECTIVE: Methamphetamine use remains a prevalent problem in the United States and is linked to numerous deleterious outcomes, including aggressive behavior, criminal activity, and incarceration. Given these associations, a greater understanding of factors that contribute to aggression among users of methamphetamine is needed, particularly within criminal justice settings, where users of this drug are overrepresented. METHODS: The present study examined the relationships between posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and emotion dysregulation and in-prison physical aggression among in

Repetitive but Not Interchangeable: Similarities and Differences in the Repetitive Behaviors of Tourette Syndrome, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Tourettic Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, and Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Repetitive behaviors are the hallmark of many neuropsychiatric disorders, including Tourette syndrome (TS), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Tics, compulsions, and stereotypies may appear similar and can be difficult to disentangle. This review addresses similarities and differences between these behaviors including clinical presentations, neuroimaging, genetics, and treatment paradigms in order to clarify the relationship between these disorders. The extensive genetic and neurocircuitry-based similarities raise the possibility that in some cases TS and

Adapting and applying a multiple domain model of condom use to Chinese college students.

This study adapts a multiple domain model (MDM) to explain condom use among a sample of sexually active Chinese college students. A cross-sectional survey was conducted and structural equation modeling was used to test the proposed model. Preparatory behaviors, theory of reasoned action (TRA)/theory of planned behavior variables, impulsivity, length of relationship, and alcohol use were significant direct predictors of condom use. The results suggest that MDM can provide a better understanding of heterosexual condom use among Chinese youth, and help in the design of HIV-preventive and safer se

The "double life" of bulimia: patients' experiences in daily life interactions.

This qualitative study, using interviews with 38 subjects, explored how and why they conceal bulimic symptoms and the understanding of concealing in terms of social interaction. A "double life" was described as a dichotomy between being active and outgoing versus performing shameful bulimic behaviors and constantly living with fear of stigmatization, and striving against exposure. Concealing was well planned to avoid such fear, and to preserve dignity. Bulimia may be understood as volitional exertion of interaction control, not just as a result of poor impulse regulation. Understanding the mea

Stimulant medication for the child with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

Stimulant medications have been used to manage the associated symptoms of ADHD including inattention, developmentally inappropriate levels of activity, distractibility, and impulsivity. To date, clinical trials clearly have established the efficacy of the stimulants on the core symptoms of ADHD and associated aggression. Although the stimulants improve classroom productivity and behavior, few data have demonstrated the effectiveness of the stimulants on academic achievement. Finally, there has been a paucity of data on the long-term efficacy and safety of stimulants. Recommendations are made f

Estrogen as a psychotherapeutic agent.

This article provides information on the effects of estrogen as a psychotherapeutic agent. Estrogen has a positive effect on several neurotransmitter systems that are assumed to be involved in regulation of affect, behavior, and cognition. Clinical studies suggest that an important cause of nonresponsiveness to antidepressants in postmenopausal women may be inadequate hormone replacement. Potential uses of estrogen as a mood stabilizer or mood enhancer also are described in this article. In the area of behavior, estrogen regulates aggressivity, sexual drive, impulsivity, and hostility. In term

Evaluating effects of episodic future thinking on valuation of delayed reward in cocaine use disorder: a pilot study.

Background: Episodic future thinking (EFT; i.e., envisioning oneself in future contexts) has been demonstrated to reduce discounting of future reward in healthy adults. While this approach has the potential to support future-oriented decision-making in substance use recovery, the impact of EFT on discounting behavior in illicit stimulant users has not yet been evaluated. Objectives: This pilot study aimed to (1) assess the feasibility of utilizing EFT methods in individuals with cocaine use disorder (CUD) and (2) conduct preliminary measurement of the EFT effect on discounting behavior in this

A Social-Cognitive Investigation of Young Adults Who Abuse Their Parents.

Within the past decade, there has been an increase in research focusing on young people who abuse their parents. However, most research has narrowly focused on adolescent children, neglecting to investigate the nature, pattern, and factors related to child-to-parent abuse perpetrated by young adults. This article integrated two complementary social-cognitive theories of aggression to explore factors associated with perpetration of child-to-parent abuse among university students (N = 435, aged 18-25 years). Participants completed the Abusive Behavior by Children-Indices, a self-report measure t

Interactive Relationships Between Sex-Related Alcohol Expectancies and Delay Discounting on Risky Sex.

BACKGROUND: Sex-related alcohol expectancies reflect the degree to which a person believes alcohol will affect her or his sexual behavior. Sex-related alcohol expectancies have been found to be predictors of drinking in sexual situations and engagement in risky sexual behavior after drinking. However, less is known about individual characteristics that may moderate these associations. Building upon recent evidence that steep delay discounting is associated with alcohol-related sexual risk taking, this study aimed to test the hypothesis that the associations between sex-related alcohol expectan

Biological and rearing mother influences on child ADHD symptoms: revisiting the developmental interface between nature and nurture.

BACKGROUND: Families of children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) report more negative family relationships than families of children without ADHD. Questions remain as to the role of genetic factors underlying associations between family relationships and children's ADHD symptoms, and the role of children's ADHD symptoms as an evocative influence on the quality of relationships experienced within such families. Utilizing the attributes of two genetically sensitive research designs, the present study examined associations between biologically related and nonbiologically rela

Enhanced Functional Activity of the Cannabinoid Type-1 Receptor Mediates Adolescent Behavior.

UNLABELLED: Adolescence is characterized by drastic behavioral adaptations and comprises a particularly vulnerable period for the emergence of various psychiatric disorders. Growing evidence reveals that the pathophysiology of these disorders might derive from aberrations of normal neurodevelopmental changes in the adolescent brain. Understanding the molecular underpinnings of adolescent behavior is therefore critical for understanding the origin of psychopathology, but the molecular mechanisms that trigger adolescent behavior are unknown. Here, we hypothesize that the cannabinoid type-1 recep

Behavioral effects of levodopa.

In recent years, levodopa-induced behavioral changes have received increased attention in the medical literature and in clinical practice. The spectrum of these symptoms includes non-motor fluctuations with neuropsychiatric symptoms, compulsive behaviors such as punding, dopamine dysregulation syndrome, and impulse control disorders, psychosis and hallucinations, as well as hypomania and mania. Despite knowledge of the clinical features associated with these behaviors, many of them are probably underdiagnosed. Although the mechanisms underlying behavioral symptoms are still incompletely unders
