The aim of this study was to obtain accurate data on the biodistribution of 111In-DTPA-D-Phe1-octreotide in tumour and normal tissues to facilitate dosimetric evaluations. Patients with carcinoid tumours, medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), differentiated thyroid tumours, endocrine pancreatic tumour (EPT), breast carcinoma, and various other tumour types were i.v. injected with 111In-DTPA-D-Phe-1-octreotide. Tumour and normal tissue samples were collected during surgery 1-35 days later, and the 111In activity concentration determined. Results showed large inter- and intra-individual variations.

Cystic fibrosis patients require pancreatic enzyme supplements to aid food digestion. It is suspected that incorrect delivery of this enzyme may result in both significant malabsorption and the development of strictures in the proximal colon caused by the high-dose supplement reaching this region before the food. The indication for splenectomy in chronic idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) remains a controversial subject. The mortality rate of persistent thrombocytopenia is very low, except in severe cases. Conversely, the risks of splenectomy are significant (in the present series, morbidity: 4.1% mortality: 1.4%), with a success rate of only 60-75%. A 60-yr-old immunodepressed woman presented with acute perimyocarditis and cardiac tamponade complicating meningococcic infection. We had the opportunity to study her cardiac condition by injecting antimyosin during the acute phase. Images at 48 hr showed unexpected findings, with obvious localization of the tracer in the pericardial fluid, as well as myocardial uptake. Possible mechanisms for pericardial activity are discussed.

As assessment was made regarding the clinical value of 111In transferrin in scintigraphy on 28 lesions in 26 cases of colorectal cancer. Forty-one patients with known lung carcinoma or suspicion of bearing this disease were studied with 111In-antiCEA F023C5-F(ab')2. Five patients with positive results were further studied to assess in vivo specificity using 111In-4C4-F(ab')2 (MoAb antihepatitis). 17 patients with known small bowel involvement in Crohn's disease (clinically active, n = 14; clinically inactive, n = 3) were examined within 8 days via barium enemas of the small bowel (Pansdorf's method or enteroclysis) and by 111In-oxine labelled leucocytes. From 19 radiologically diagnosed small bowel stenoses 14 were classified as inflammatory and 5 as non-inflammatory. The leucocyte scan also showed 14 inflammatory stenoses.
