[The Well-informed Patient: a Survey on Patients' Initiative in Seeking Disease-related Information].

Internet and print media are frequently used by laypersons to learn about health issues. The objective of this study was to find out whether people with mental disorders showed a special pattern of usage. Where and why do they seek for information about their disorder? How do they experience their search? In semi-standardized interviews, we surveyed 200 psychiatric inpatients. Only patients of the following diagnostic groups were included: 1. Schizophrenia, schizotypal and delusional disorders (F20-F29), 2. Affective disorders (F30-F39) and 3. Disorders of adult personality and behavior (F60-F

Cell type- and layer-specific convergence in core and shell neurons of the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus.

Over 40 distinct types of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) generate parallel processing pathways in the visual system. In mice, two subdivisions of the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (dLGN), the core and the shell, organize distinct parallel channels to transmit visual information from the retina to the primary visual cortex (V1). To investigate how the dLGN core and shell differentially integrate visual information and other modalities, we mapped synaptic input sources to each dLGN subdivision at the cell-type level with G-deleted rabies viral vectors. The monosynaptic circuit tracing reveale

Short communication: drug information unit as an effective tool for promoting rational drug use.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

BACKGROUND: The rapid developments in medical and biological sciences have led to emergence of huge information on drugs and various diseases. But accessing this vast information has limits and rational selection of drugs and utilization of drugs have become more complex. Information regarding the various aspects of drugs may be conveyed by drug information units which run only in specified tertiary care institutional units, to the physicians who treat the patients in the hospital and to the general practitioners outside, in emergencies and in normal situations. METHODS: The queries of client

Harnessing Open-Source Solutions: Insights From the First Open Systems Pharmacology (OSP) Community Conference.

In 2017, the free and open-source software Open Systems Pharmacology (OSP) was launched. Since then, OSP has evolved from a small community into a diverse network of stakeholders committed to advancing open-source solutions for model-informed drug development (MIDD). In this context, the first OSP Community Conference was hosted by Novartis in Basel, Switzerland, on October 7-8, 2024, which gathered over 100 attendees from more than 40 institutions. This perspective synthesizes key insights from the conference.

What information is available online for adults with distal radius fracture? Online literature search and synthesis using generative AI.

INTRODUCTION: Distal radius fractures (DRFs) are the most common adult fracture in the UK, and patients seek online information to support recovery. The quality of such information varies, including in artificial intelligence (AI) generated summaries. This study explored the use of a generative AI model (Gemini) for information searching and synthesis of patient information on DRF recovery. METHODS: Seven health information questions were co-developed with patients, hand therapists, and surgeons. Each question was searched in Google using three terms: 'distal radius fracture', 'wrist fracture

The benefits of immature cognitive control: How distributed attention guards against learning traps.

Cognitive control allows one to focus one's attention efficiently on relevant information while filtering out irrelevant information. This ability provides a means of rapid and effective learning, but using this control also brings risks. Importantly, useful information may be ignored and missed, and learners may fall into "learning traps" (e.g., learned inattention) wherein they fail to realize that what they ignore carries important information. Previous research has shown that adults may be more prone to such traps than young children, but the mechanisms underlying this difference are uncle

Resting EEG effective connectivity at the sources in developmental dysphonetic dyslexia. Differences with non-specific reading delay.

Previous studies conducted on subjects with dysphonetic dyslexia (DD) reported inefficient timing integration of information from various brain areas. This dysregulation has been referred as neuronal dyschronia or timing deficiency. The present study examines the effective brain connectivity in Dysphonetic Dyslexic subjects (DD) compared to a group of subjects with non-specific reading delay (NSRD). The hypothesis is that the timing defect should be reflected also in the effective connectivity and the subjects with developmental dyslexia have an altered information flow different from the grou

Gene therapy for retinal diseases: From genetics to treatment.

The gene therapy approach for retinal disorders has been considered largely over the last decade owing to the favorable outcomes of the US Food and Drug Administration-approved commercial gene therapy, Luxturna. Technological advances in recent years, such as next-generation sequencing, research in molecular pathogenesis of retinal disorders, and precise correlations with their clinical phenotypes, have contributed to the progress of gene therapies for various diseases worldwide, and more recently in India as well. Thus, considerable research is being conducted for the right choice of vectors,

Contributions of the retrosplenial and posterior parietal cortices to cue-specific and contextual fear conditioning.

The retrosplenial cortex (RSP) and the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) are the primary sources of cortical sensory input to the postrhinal cortex (POR) in rodents. Together, these areas compose a major corticohippocampal circuit that is involved in processing visuospatial information. The POR has been implicated in contextual learning and memory, consistent with the type of information presumably being processed by this region. By comparison, little is known about the role of the RSP or the PPC in contextual learning. In the present study, rats were trained either before or after surgery in a

Patient's choice of health information and treatment modality for Peyronie's disease: a long-term assessment.

Despite various Peyronie's disease (PD) treatment options, the literature is sparse regarding patient preference for available therapies. Our data explore resource and treatment choices made by PD men following diagnosis. A survey was mailed to 719 randomly selected PD men evaluated at our institution from 1990-2012. Questions included evaluation of treatments and preferred information resources. Results were summarized as a descriptive report with statistical analyses performed as indicated. A total of 162 men (median age 65) responded with median PD duration of 9.2 years. Information sources…

Effects of decision variables and intraparietal stimulation on sensorimotor oscillatory activity in the human brain.

To decide effectively, information must not only be integrated from multiple sources, but it must be distributed across the brain if it is to influence structures such as motor cortex that execute choices. Human participants integrated information from multiple, but only partially informative, cues in a probabilistic reasoning task in an optimal manner. We tested whether lateralization of alpha- and beta-band oscillatory brain activity over sensorimotor cortex reflected decision variables such as the sum of the evidence provided by observed cues, a key quantity for decision making, and whether

Visual processing of the impending collision of a looming object: time to collision revisited.

As an object approaches an observer's eye, the optical variable tau, defined as the inverse relative expansion rate of the object's image on the retina (D. N. Lee, 1976), approximates the time to collision (TTC). Many studies have provided support that human observers use TTC, but evidence for the exclusive use of TTC generated by tau remains inconclusive. In the present study, observers were presented with a visual display of two sequentially approaching objects and asked to compare their TTCs at the moment these objects vanished. Upon dissociating several variables that may have potentially
