Background: Many women who inject drugs are aware of the associated risks, however social influences play a part in their behavioral decisions. Incorporation of others in drug use behaviors may be common practice among women who use drugs. We report the case of a 63-year-old woman with thiamine deficiency who showed auditory hallucinations, a delusion of persecution, catatonic stupor, and catalepsy but no neurological symptoms including oculomotor or gait disturbance. Adult onset Still's disease (AOSD) is an inflammatory disorder characterized by daily spiking high fevers, arthritis and an evanescent rash. It is a rare disease of unknown aetiology and can have serious systemic and musculoskeletal sequelae. Literature on the association of myocarditis with AOSD is very sparse. Here, we present a case of AOSD associated with myocarditis, in which the patient responded well to systemic steroids.

Sydenham's Chorea (SC), a major manifestation of acute Rheumatic Fever (RF), is a nonsuppurative sequelae of group A streptococcal infection. RF is a significant public health problem in developing countries, and SC continues to afflict large numbers of children throughout the world. Although the incidence of RF is low in industrialized countries, SC does occur. We recently treated two children with SC. Both children showed the typical features of SC, which are choreatic movements, hypotonia and emotional lability. We describe the course of SC in the two children.

In the present study we developed a fast and reliable HPLC assay for the determination of the loop diuretic furosemide in plasma and urine, using a Chromolith RP 18e (100 mm x 4.6 mm) monolithic silica rod HPLC column. After liquid-liquid extraction with diethylether plasma or urine samples were separated with a gradient consisting of solvent A (20% acetonitrile) and solvent B (80% acetonitrile), both in 0.25% acetic acid. This study evaluated the efficacy and tolerability of intravenous valproate in acute mania in adolescents. Five consecutive patients, meeting the study criteria, were treated with intravenous valproate. Of them, three significantly improved and one had no appreciable improvement. Two out of five patients experienced gastrointestinal and neurological side effects. This preliminary study suggests intravenous valproate is useful and safe to treat acute juvenile mania.

The correct diagnosis of tachycardia is important for reasons of treatment and prognosis. Intravenous bolus injection of adenosine can be used to diagnose tachycardia as ventricular or supraventricular and to convert AV-nodal re-entry tachycardia as well as re-entry tachycardia due to an accessory pathway. The effect of adenosine on different types of tachycardia is demonstrated. A strategy is proposed for examination and treatment of patients with manifest tachycardia to improve diagnosis and remove bias to supraventricular tachycardia and underdiagnosis of ventricular tachycardia.

The effect of the number of trypanosomes in the initial inoculum on the minimum curative dose, was determined for an experimental infection of Trypanosoma congolense in mice treated with isometamidium.
