Natural population dynamics of Asian citrus psyllid, Diaphorina citri, and its control based on pheromone trapping.

The Asian citrus psyllid (Diaphorina citri) is a major agricultural pest and the principal vector of Huanglongbing (HLB), a devastating citrus disease. Thus, its control is of utmost importance: since D. citri mates multiple times, the use of mating disruption has the potential to reduce or eliminate populations. In this work, we develop a sex-structured, piecewise smooth dynamical system modeling the natural population dynamics of D. citri, focusing on adult stages and mating behavior. The main goal of this manuscript is to show that the population of D. citri, when near a locally asymptotica

Effects of Two Conventional Insecticides on Male-Specific Sex Pheromone Discrimination and Mate Choice in Trichogramma chilonis (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae).

Trichogramma chilonis Ishii is an important natural enemy of many lepidopterous pests on vegetables and field crops. The effects of two conventional insecticides on male-specific sex pheromone discrimination and mate choice in T. chilonis was evaluated in the laboratory. Beta-cypermethrin LC20 exposure induced decreases in male conspecific sex pheromone discrimination and mating rate in T. chilonis, and these decreases were not due to the lower locomotor activity of the surviving T. chilonis males. Spinosad LC20 exposure caused a significant decrease in male locomotor activity of T. chilonis,

Host marking pheromone (HMP) in the Mexican fruit fly Anastrepha ludens.

Host marking pheromones (HMPs) are used by insects to mark hosts (usually a fruit) where they have already laid eggs. The compounds serve as a deterrent to conspecifics avoiding over-infestation of hosts (i.e. repeated egg-laying into an already occupied/used host). If these HMPs are sprayed onto commercially valuable fruit they act as deterrents preventing attack by females interested in laying eggs into the valuable commodity. Having no insecticidal or toxic properties, and being natural products (or close derivatives thereof) they could be used as fruit sprays to replace insecticides, or in

Transcriptomic analysis reveals that high-protein artificial diet enhances reproductive performance of Protaetia brevitarsis (Lewis) (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae).

Insects have emerged as promising sustainable alternative protein sources, among which Protaetia brevitarsis (Lewis) (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) exhibits considerable potential for valorizing lignocellulosic wastes (e.g. crop straw) into high-value proteins. The larvae of this species are traditionally used in medicine and as a health food, but the underdeveloped rearing technology for adults has impeded large‑scale commercialization and application. Thus, the development and optimization of artificial diets represent a critical breakthrough for overcoming this bottleneck. Herein, we integrated

Genetic characterization of candidate ecdysteroid kinases in Drosophila melanogaster.

Ecdysteroids are major hormones in insects and control molting, growth, reproduction, physiology, and behavior. The biosynthesis of ecdysteroids such as 20-hydroxyecdysone (20E) from dietary sterols is well characterized, but ecdysteroid catabolism is poorly understood. Ecdysteroid kinases (EcKs) mediate the reversible phosphorylation of ecdysteroids, which has been implicated in ecdysteroid recycling during embryogenesis and reproduction in various insects. However, to date, only 2 EcK-encoding genes have been identified, in the silkworm Bombyx mori and the mosquito Anopheles gambiae. Previou

Two low-toxic Klebsiella pneumoniae strains from gut of black soldier fly Hermetia illucens are multi-resistance to sulfonamides and cadmium.

In recent years, pollution of antibiotics and heavy metal has often been reported in organic wastes. Saprophytic insects have been recorded as biological control agents in organic waste management. During organic waste conversion, the intestinal bacteria of the saprophytic insects play an important role in digestion, physiology, immunity and prevention of pathogen colonization. Black soldier fly (BSF) Hermetia illucens has been widely used as saprophytic insects and showed tolerance to sulfonamides (SAs) and cadmium (Cd). Diversity and changes in gut microbiota of black soldier fly larvae (BSF

Monthly activity of Phlebotominae sand flies in Sistan-Baluchistan Province, Southeast Iran.

The monthly activity of sand flies, which are vectors of leishmaniasis, was studied from May to October 1997 in three regions (plains, mountainous, coastal) of the Sistan-Bluchistan Province using sticky paper traps. In each village, three houses were selected. 30 sticky traps were installed indoors (bedroom, guestroom, toilet, bathroom) and 30 were installed outdoors (rodent burrows, wall cracks). In total, 8,558 and 1,596 sand fly specimens were collected and identified from outdoors and indoors, respectively. Ten species of Phlebotomus and eight species of Sergentomyia were collected outdoo

Insecticidal activity of scorpion toxin (ButaIT) and snowdrop lectin (GNA) containing fusion proteins towards pest species of different orders.

BACKGROUND: The toxicity of a fusion protein, ButalT/GNA, comprising a venom toxin (ButaIT) derived from the red scorpion, Mesobuthus tamulus (F.), and Galanthus nivalis agglutinin (GNA), was evaluated under laboratory conditions against several pest insects. Insecticidal activity was compared with SFI1/GNA, a fusion comprising a venom toxin (SFI1) derived from the European spider Segestria florentina (Rossi) and GNA, which has been previously demonstrated to be effective against lepidopteran and hemipteran pests, and to GNA itself. RESULTS: Injection assays demonstrated that both fusion prot

Successes and failures in the control of infectious diseases in Brazil: social and environmental context, policies, interventions, and research needs.

Despite pronounced reductions in the number of deaths due to infectious diseases over the past six decades, infectious diseases are still a public health problem in Brazil. In this report, we discuss the major successes and failures in the control of infectious diseases in Brazil, and identify research needs and policies to further improve control or interrupt transmission. Control of diseases such as cholera, Chagas disease, and those preventable by vaccination has been successful through efficient public policies and concerted efforts from different levels of government and civil society. Application of optimal control to the onchocerciasis transmission model with treatment.

In this paper, we present a model for onchocerciasis that considers mass administration of ivermectin, contact prevention controls and vector elimination. The model equilibria are computed and stability analysis carried out in terms of the basic reproduction number R0. The model is found to exhibit a backward bifurcation so that for R0 less than unity is not sufficient to eradicate the disease from the population and the need is to lower R0 to below a certain threshold, R0c for effective disease control. The model is fitted to data on individuals with onchocerciasis in Ghana. A sensitivity ana

Development of a Droplet-Based RNA Interference Feeding Assay for Neonates of the Citrus Root Weevil Diaprepes abbreviatus.

The citrus root weevil, Diaprepes abbreviatus, is an economically important pest of citrus and ornamental crops whose subterranean larval feeding damages roots and predisposes plants to secondary pathogen infection. Development of efficient RNA interference (RNAi) delivery methods for early larval stages is essential for functional genomics studies and the evaluation of RNAi-based pest management strategies. In this study, we developed a droplet-based feeding assay for oral delivery of double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) to neonates of D. abbreviatus using chitin synthase 2 (DaCHS2) as a model RNAi ta

Influence of anthranilic diamide insecticides on emerald ash borer (Coleoptera: Buprestidae) larvae and establishment of introduced parasitoids in central Kentucky.

Emerald ash borer (EAB) (Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire) (Coleoptera: Buprestidae) is an invasive pest of ash trees (Fraxinus spp.) in the United States. EAB is best managed via insecticides and biological control by wasps and woodpeckers. Neonicotinoids are often used for EAB due to cost and ease of use but are becoming restricted worldwide and are toxic to beneficial insects. Anthranilic diamides, a newer insecticide class, can manage beetle larvae with limited off-target effects. If diamides control EAB, they could replace neonicotinoids. We tested if drenches of chlorantraniliprole and cyan

Insights into garlic (Allium Sativum)'s nutrigenomics-associated fly-repellent potency in cattle.

Despite effective control of flies using synthetic pesticides, fly resistance and environmental contamination have led to the inadequacy of this strategy. The use of integrated pest management approaches has since been advocated in contemporary research to sustainably control fly populations. Recent studies have found garlic (Allium Sativum) and its derivative bioactive compounds to possess insect-repellent attributes among other key health and production enhancing properties. This highlights the potential of garlic as a botanical pesticide to control flies in cattle. Moreover, the ability of

Reducing malaria transmission in forest-going mobile and migrant populations in Lao PDR and Cambodia: protocol for stepped-wedge cluster-randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Countries of the Greater Mekong Sub-region aim to achieve malaria elimination by 2030. In the region, malaria is concentrated in high-risk areas and populations such as forest-going mobile and migrant populations (MMPs). However, routine protective measures such as long-lasting insecticidal nets do not prevent all infectious bites in these high-risk populations. Evidence for the effectiveness of a personal protection package tailored to forest-going MMPs which is acceptable, feasible, and cost-effective for reducing malaria transmission is required to inform the malaria elimination

Seasonal variation in abundance and blood meal sources of primary and secondary malaria vectors within Kilombero Valley, Southern Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Existing control tools have significantly reduced malaria over the past two decades. However, progress has been stalled due to increased resistance in primary vectors and the increasing role of secondary vectors. This study aimed to investigate the impact of seasonal change on primary and secondary vector abundance and host preference. Understanding the impact of seasonal dynamics of primary and secondary vectors on disease transmission will inform effective strategies for vector management and control. METHODS: Vector abundance was measured through longitudinal collection of mosq

Deltamethrin Persistence on Textiles Used to Make Visual Targets for Tsetse Fly Control is Positively Correlated With Their Polyester Content.

Insecticide-impregnated traps and visual targets are used for tsetse (Diptera, Glossinidae) population control. Such devices are made with textiles and deltamethrin is frequently the insecticide of choice. However, persistence of an insecticide on textiles is affected by exposure to weather. Here we examine the effect of weathering on the capacity of four textiles with increasing proportions of polyester (0, 35, 65, and 100%) with cotton and viscose to retain deltamethrin. Textiles tested were those used to make visual targets in a pan-African program to maximize target efficiency for controll

Evaluation of Alternatives to an Organophosphate Insecticide with Selected Cultural Practices: Effects on Thrips, Frankliniella fusca, and Incidence of Spotted Wilt in Peanut Farmscapes.

Peanut growers use a combination of tactics to manage spotted wilt disease caused by thrips-transmitted Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV). They include planting TSWV-resistant cultivars, application of insecticides, and various cultural practices. Two commonly used insecticides against thrips are aldicarb and phorate. Both insecticides exhibit broad-spectrum toxicity. Recent research has led to the identification of potential alternatives to aldicarb and phorate. In this study, along with reduced-risk, alternative insecticides, we evaluated the effect of conventional versus strip tillage; singl

Spinosad Versus Spinetoram Effects on Kill and Oviposition of Rhagoletis indifferens (Diptera: Tephritidae) at Differing Fly Ages and Temperatures.

Western cherry fruit fly, Rhagoletis indifferens Curran (Diptera: Tephritidae), is a major quarantine pest of cherries (Prunus spp.) in western North America that is often managed using the organic insecticide spinosad, but there is a question of whether its semisynthetic relative spinetoram is more toxic and better to use for controlling the fly. Here, spinosad and spinetoram effects on R. indifferens kill and oviposition were determined by exposing 3-4, 7-10, or 14-18 d old flies to dry spinosad and spinetoram (0.21 or 0.33 mg active ingredient [a.i.] per dish) and untreated cherries or to i
