Parental and peer predictors of social anxiety in youth.

The aim of the current study was to extend etiological models of social anxiety in youth by examining the relative importance of parental (i.e., parental anxiety, rejection, and overcontrol) and peer factors (i.e., social acceptance, social support, and friendship quality). Sixty-three youth (ages 7–12; 52% male) and their parents participated in the study. Using multiple informants of these factors, results generally indicated that higher levels of parental anxiety, rejection, and overcontrol were related to higher levels of social anxiety. Higher levels of social support, acceptance, and val

Child effects on communication between parents of youth with and without attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

Numerous studies indicate interparental conflict causes child externalizing behavior. However, far less is known about the inverse relationship. Exploring this gap in the literature has clear implications for parents of children with externalizing disorders (e.g., attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder [ADHD]). Adapting an experimental child behavior manipulation paradigm (Lang, Pelham, Atkeson, & Murphy, 1999; Pelham et al., 1997, 1998), parent couples of 9- to 12-year-old boys and girls with ADHD (n = 51) and without ADHD (n = 39) were randomly assigned to interact with a "disruptive" or "

Epidemiologic trends of adolescent use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs.

This article provides an overview of drug and alcohol use and risk factors among American adolescents. Current trends indicate that tobacco, alcohol, and marijuana are the most frequently used substances among this age group. Further, the greatest risk factors for using these substances are being male, being White, being an older adolescent, engaging in sexual risk behaviors, having a family history of substance abuse, associating with peers who abuse substances, and lacking a sense of school commitment and connectedness. These findings underscore the need to involve communities, families, sch

Parental overprotection and interpersonal behavior in generalized social phobia.

Forty-one people with generalized social phobia (GSP) and 42 community controls completed a measure of social developmental experiences and then participated in a social interaction with an experimental assistant whose behavior was either friendly or ambiguous. Following the interaction, confederates rated participants' behavior and their desire to interact with their partner again. In people with social phobia, but not controls, perceptions of parental overprotection were associated with less responsiveness to partner behavior. Moreover, failure to reciprocate the friendly partner's behavior

Social contexts of drug offers among American Indian youth and their relationship to substance use: an exploratory study.

In this exploratory study the authors examined the social contexts of American Indian youths' encounters with drug offers and their relationship to substance use. Using an inventory of drug use-related problem situations developed specifically for American Indian youth, questionnaires were completed by 71 American Indian youth at public middle schools in a Southwest metropolitan area. Regression analyses highlight the importance of situational and relational contexts in understanding substance use among the youth in this sample. Exposure to drug offers through parents, other adults, cousins, f

A longitudinal study of the effects of early abuse on later victimization among high-risk adolescents.

Although previous research on adolescents finds a link between early abuse and later victimization, the majority of this research is cross-sectional and based on samples of currently homeless adolescents. Therefore, factors that predict the likelihood of victimization have not been systematically examined. As such, the current study longitudinally examines the effects of early abuse and poor parenting on victimization via running away, delinquency, and early sexual onset among a sample of over 700 currently housed high-risk adolescents. Results revealed that having experienced sexual and physi

Adolescents' behavior in the presence of interparental hostility: developmental and emotion regulatory influences.

Within-family covariation between interparental hostility and adolescent behavior across three interactions over a 2-year period was explored in a sample that included 37 typical adolescents and 35 adolescents recently hospitalized for psychiatric difficulties. More interparental hostility across the three interactions was associated with more adolescent hostility and more positive engagement (at a trend level) regardless of psychiatric background. Parent-to-child hostility in each interaction mediated the link for adolescent hostility but not for positive adolescent engagement. Emotion regula

The interrelatedness of multiple forms of childhood abuse, neglect, and household dysfunction.

OBJECTIVE: Childhood abuse and other adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have historically been studied individually, and relatively little is known about the co-occurrence of these events. The purpose of this study is to examine the degree to which ACEs co-occur as well as the nature of their co-occurrence. METHOD: We used data from 8,629 adult members of a health plan who completed a survey about 10 ACEs which included: childhood abuse (emotional, physical, and sexual), neglect (emotional and physical), witnessing domestic violence, parental marital discord, and living with substance abusi

Healthy women from suspected hereditary breast and ovarian cancer families: the significant others in their lives.

This paper investigates communication and interactions between healthy women from families with a history of breast/ovarian cancer and five statuses of significant others: (1) women friends; (2) sisters; (3) brothers; (4) male partners; and (5) children in order to better understand the way the family deals with cancer genetics risk information and the extent of social support available to its members. We conducted a research ethics committee reviewed exploratory, qualitative study at a major clinical and research cancer centre in the United Kingdom from January to June 2000. Twenty-one semi-s

Stalking and psychological abuse: common factors and relationship-specific characteristics.

The purpose of this study was to refine and elaborate models of personality and relationship-specific characteristics in the perpetration of stalking and psychological abuse. Three hundred and forty-two college students who had been in intimate relationships completed a series of questionnaires about their most recent breakup and their former relationship. Our hypotheses were supported, with harsh parental discipline, anxious attachment, and need for control of one's partner forming a common cluster in the prediction of stalking and psychological abuse. For psychological abuse, relationship di

[Grief and depression in advanced age--the significance of losses of close relations in endogenous and neurotic-reactive depressions].

Largely "normal" grief reactions cannot always be easily separated from "pathological" grief reactions and depressive illness. Starting from methodological problems in grief research, 339 patients over 45 years who were treated for endogenous, neurotic or reactive depression and showed signs of pathological grief reaction after former or actual loss of a close-standing person were investigated. Marked sex differences were found. In the investigated patients, the symptom pattern of the pathological grief reactions contained mainly depressive developments, chronification of somatic complaints, p

AIDS health education for intravenous drug users.

Intravenous (IV) drug users are the second largest risk group for AIDS and the main source of infection for heterosexual partner and pediatric AIDS cases. IV drug users have an addiction and a subculture that make risk reduction difficult; for example, to refuse to share needles can endanger personal relationships, and carrying clean works (rather than renting them in a shooting gallery) risks arrest. In New York City, at least, knowledge about AIDS transmission is widespread among IV drug users, and most drug injectors report having changed their drug use practices to reduce their risks. The

Some childhood antecedents of drug and alcohol abuse.

Unsatisfactory intrafamilial relationships and child-rearing practices have frequently been implicated as prime determinants of personalities that are susceptible to drug and alcohol abuse. Five thousand forty-four US Army soldiers were surveyed by anonymous questionnaires. The reported occurrence of a variety of activities, events and behaviors in childhood among drug and alcohol abusers were compared to non users. Childhood antecedents that were associated with non-use of illegal drugs and which showed as much as a 20% difference in reported occurrence between abusers and non-users of illega

On the pervasiveness of event-specific alcohol use, general substance use, and mental health problems as risk factors for intimate partner violence.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of demographic, mental health, and substance use as risk factors for intimate partner violence (IPV). Data were derived from Wave II of the National Epidemiological Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (2004-2005). Eligible participants (N = 25,778) reported having an intimate partner 1 year before the survey. Clustered survey multivariate multinomial regression methods were used to assess risk factors for episodes of IPV. IPV victimization, perpetration, and both victims/perpetrators were assessed. Bivariate analyses indicated that African Am

Effects of a Counselor-Facilitated Rite of Passage Group on Behavioral Outcomes in At-Risk Adolescent Boys: Evidence From the Quest Project®.

INTRODUCTION: At-risk adolescent boys exhibit elevated rates of behavioral problems, interpersonal difficulties, and emotional dysregulation-patterns shaped by multiple risk factors, including disrupted family relationships, and compounded by masculine gender socialization norms that discourage emotional expression and help-seeking. Controlled outcome studies of group interventions specifically designed for at-risk adolescent boys remain rare. METHODS: Using a controlled pre-post design, we examined the effects of a 10-week counselor-facilitated rite of passage group-the Quest Project-on teac

Confucian values and continuance intention in leaderboard-based health gamification.

OBJECTIVE: Although gamification has been shown to enhance user motivation and engagement, its effects may vary across cultural contexts. This study examines how Confucian values shape users' continuance intention in leaderboard-based health gamification through positive and negative psychological pathways. METHODS: We conducted an online survey of 300 WeChat Run users and analyzed the data using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). Drawing on the Confucian values perspective and the dedication-constraint model, we conceptualized self-cultivation as an enabling Confuc
