We report a case of gastrocolic fistula (GCF) caused by a gastric ulcer and rare endoscopic findings indicating the early stages of GCF formation. The patient was a 58-year-old man who was hospitalized with upper abdominal pain. He was diagnosed as having a gastric ulcer, and was prescribed a proton pump inhibitor (PPI), but did not comply with the medication. One year later, he was again referred with recurrent abdominal pain. Endoscopic examination showed what appeared to be a portion of exposed colonic wall located in the center of an active gastric ulcer, and repeated endoscopy after PPI t

Fistulas manifest frequently in Crohn disease and can result in significant morbidity and often lead to the need for surgical intervention. Historically, it has been more difficult to obtain complete fistula closure in patients with perianal Crohn disease. Anti-tumor necrosis factor-alpha agents and the use of more accurate imaging modalities such as magnetic resonance imaging and rectal endoscopic ultrasound have enhanced the ability to manage fistulizing Crohn disease. A combined medical and surgical approach usually presents the best option for most patients.

Erosion of the "Kugel" mesh into intraperitoneal organs has not been previously reported in the medical literature. We report such an occurrence in a 54-year-old male, 4 years following a "Kugel" preperitoneal repair of a left-sided inguinal hernia. The patient presented with septicaemia, pneumaturia and left iliac fossa pain. His computed tomography (CT) scan indicated the presence of gas in the bladder and a thickened loop of sigmoid colon attached to the region of the dome of the bladder. Colonoscopy showed some scattered diverticula in the sigmoid colon but no tumour. On surgical explorati

A 74-year-old man with hypertension presented with foamy urine and intermittent right upper quadrant abdominal pain. He had undergone 2 sessions of percutaneous nephrolithotripsy for right renal stones and shock wave lithotripsy 6 months before for residual stones. Abdominal computed tomography showed stones in an irregularly shaped right kidney and abscess formation that extended through the colon and was communicating with the duodenum.

The authors report a case of xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis complicated by renocolic fistula. This is a rare complication. The patient was treated by right nephrectomy and closure of the fistula performed by manually assisted laparoscopic surgery.

A 46-year-old man underwent radiofrequency (RF) ablation of three liver metastases 7 months after undergoing right colectomy for a pT2N0Mx colon adenocarcinoma. Three months after the procedure, he developed hepatic abscesses related to a fistula between the distal ileum and segment V biliary branches.

Gastrocolic fistulae are a rare entity, occurring most commonly in the context of a malignant process or less frequently as a complication of a benign gastric ulcer. Presenting symptoms tend to be nonspecific, but the diagnosis can be confirmed with near certainty by barium enema examination or an upper gastrointestinal series. Although the management of gastrocolic fistulae has historically been surgical, medical management has recently been recommended as the first line of treatment when an underlying malignancy can be excluded.

We herein report the case of a 65-year old man with gastrojejunocolic fistula. The patient was admitted to our hospital because of edema of the lower limbs, diarrhea, and weight loss. His history included a distal gastric resection and Billroth II reconstruction for a duodenal ulcer 20 years previously. The laboratory data on admission revealed hypoproteinemia and hypoalbuminemia. An upper gastrointestinal X-ray series revealed a fistula between the transverse colon and upper jejunum. After improving his state of malnutrition, a partial resection of the remnant stomach, transverse colon, and j

Duodenal impaction of a gallstone after its migration through a cholecystoduodenal fistula is an uncommon cause of gallstone ileus described as Bouveret's syndrome. Surgical treatment is recommended, but the morbidity and mortality rates are nearly 60% and 30%, respectively. To reduce these rates using improved endoluminal surgery, a laparoscopically assisted intraluminal gastric surgery could be considered. A 74 year-old woman was admitted with typical Bouveret's syndrome. An intraluminal gastric laparoscopy was performed. The large stone impacted in the first duodenum was removed through the

Most patients with ampullary carcinoma have obstructive jaundice without cholangitis. We experienced a patient with ampullary carcinoma who presented with obstructive jaundice and cholangitis, probably because of an accompanying periampullary choledochoduodenal fistula. A 77-year-old Japanese man had jaundice, high fever, and upper abdominal pain and was diagnosed, at another hospital, with obstructive cholangitis. On admission to our hospital, his symptoms and signs had subsided spontaneously. Abdominal ultrasonography showed cholecystolithiasis and dilatation of the common bile duct. Duodeno

Cholecystocolic fistula is a rare complication of gallstone disease that is most commonly diagnosed at the time of surgery. It is generally considered to be a contraindication to laparoscopic cholecystectomy because of the difficulties involved in its management intraoperatively. Laparoscopic stapling or suturing techniques have been reported as feasible and safe methods for repairing such fistulas; however, these procedures are not always able to be performed due to technical difficulties. We exteriorized a cholecystocolic fistula through an umbilical incision, whereby it was repaired safely

The appropriate treatment of patients with fistulas in the setting of Crohn's disease requires a knowledge of the specific medical and surgical literature of fistulizing Crohn's. The patient with symptomatic fistulizing Crohn's disease may respond differently to specific medical therapy than a patient with symptomatic obstructing Crohn's disease. Certain medications that are useful for the treatment of patients with obstructive Crohn's disease may not be helpful in the treatment of fistulas in patients with fistulizing Crohn's disease (e.g., corticosteroids and mesalamine); in fact, some medic
