This report concerns a screening programme for colorectal cancer using Fecatest, a relatively sensitive test for faecal occult blood, in a factor-based population. A total of 2420 workers between 40 and 65 years of age returned kits for testing following suitable dietary restriction. In Factory A, in which screening was offered as part of an annual medical examination, 989 men agreed to participate, a compliance rate of 45%. The colonoscopic management of 86 patients with polypoid lesions of bleeding from the colon of intermittent nature is discussed. There were 145 polyps found in 85 of these patients. Adenomatous polyps occurring in the sigmoid colon above the reach of the standard sigmoidoscope was the most common finding and pathological diagnosis. Twelve patients with heterotopic ossification in abdominal scars have been studied. Two patients were elderly females. Operative excision was required in seven: two for local symptoms, two for suspected local malignant recurrences and three for further intra-abdominal procedures. The other five instances were diagnosed roentgenologically. The mechanisms of formation of such lesions are not clear, but both the implantation and metaplasia theories may be correct.

One hundred and twenty-one rectal biopsies from 99 patients with carcinoma of the rectum or lower sigmoid colon were investigated using a high iron-diamine-Alcian blue technique for sulphated and non-sulphated acid mucins. It was found that in normal rectal mucosa sulphomucins are the main carbohydrate component of the goblet cell mucin. Pneumoscrotum is an unusual problem that is very rarely associated with gastrointestinal endoscopy procedures. It has been reported to occur after colonoscopy and polypectomy. The present paper describes the case of an 81-year-old man with benign pneumoscrotum that formed after polypectomy at the site of a previous rectal polyp. The pneumoscrotum was managed with conservative treatment.
