Self-Responsive Plastron Maintenance on a Superhydrophobic Mesh via Locally Integrated Electrolysis.

Underwater superhydrophobic surfaces can retain an interfacial gas layer (known as plastron), enabling functions such as drag reduction and antifouling. However, the plastron suffers from inevitable instability under hydrostatic pressure and flow-induced shear. Current electrolysis-based replenishment strategies are often hindered by complex electrode configurations, gas leakage, and a lack of autonomous feedback. Herein, we present a self-responsive superhydrophobic mesh with locally integrated electrodes (SHM-E) to achieve intelligent plastron maintenance. By coupling a compact local Pt anod…

Towards data-driven predictive maintenance for vacuum ion pumps at European XFEL.

Large-scale scientific facilities, such as the European XFEL, are highly complex, comprising multiple subsystems that must operate in coordination to produce high-quality scientific output. Any fault within such subsystems can cause unexpected interruptions, with a significant impact on the scientific output. Therefore, it is fundamental to detect abnormal behavior in components well in advance, allowing for timely interventions and efficient maintenance planning. Vacuum ion pumps are an integral part of these facilities, and their smooth operation is essential to maintain overall performance.…

Dissecting Tumor-Associated Tertiary Lymphoid Structure Formation and Maintenance Using Mouse Models.

The solid tumor microenvironment is a highly complex system shaped by dynamic interactions among immune and non-immune cell populations. The formation and organization of tumor-associated tertiary lymphoid structures (TA-TLS) have been observed in patients and linked to favorable prognosis and improved response to immunotherapy against a variety of cancers. Since then, preclinical mouse models have been extensively used to recapitulate TA-TLS formation, dissect the underlying mechanisms, and define the cellular interactions licensing TLS anti-tumor activity. Importantly, mouse models allow tem

Mitochondrial transcription factor A: linking mtDNA maintenance, mitochondrial stress responses, and inflammaging.

Mitochondrial transcription factor A (TFAM) is a nuclear-encoded mitochondrial protein that directly binds mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and contributes to mitochondrial genome maintenance. Beyond its established roles in mitochondrial transcription, mtDNA packaging, nucleoid organization, replication support, and copy number control, TFAM is increasingly recognized as a potential regulator of aging-related mitochondrial stress responses. Because mtDNA instability, respiratory dysfunction, reactive oxygen species imbalance, impaired autophagy, cellular senescence, and chronic inflammation are clos…

Gemcitabine as maintenance treatment of diffuse pleural mesothelioma: randomized phase II study.

BACKGROUND: Diffuse Pleural Mesothelioma (DPM) is an aggressive cancer with limited treatment options and a poor prognosis. Maintenance therapy has emerged as a potential strategy to delay disease progression following first-line chemotherapy. This study evaluates the efficacy and safety of gemcitabine maintenance therapy compared to best supportive care (BSC) in patients with unresectable DPM. METHODS: This single-center, randomized, phase II, open-label trial included 64 patients with unresectable DPM who achieved a complete/partial response or stable disease after first-line platinum-based …

Acceptance of communication robots among patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis with psychological stress.

OBJECTIVE: Although several psychotherapeutic interventions have been introduced for patients receiving maintenance hemodialysis (MHD), challenges such as feelings of shame persist. Prior studies indicate that robot-assisted interviews evoke less shame than human interactions. The Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) provides a robust framework for examining factors influencing technology adoption. This study applied TAM to evaluate the use of a communication robot (Sota-100) in psychotherapeutic interventions for patients with MHD. METHODS: Twenty-six outpatients with MHD participated. Each com…

Association between blood pressure and clinical outcomes in patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis.

BACKGROUND: Despite the clinical importance of blood pressure control in patients undergoing hemodialysis (HD), evidence on the blood pressure ranges associated with favorable outcomes remains limited and inconsistent. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the data from the HD quality assessments in South Korea. Systolic blood pressure (SBP) was classified into 6 groups: VL-sys group (< 100, n = 230), L-sys (100-120, n = 2,272), R-sys (120-140, n = 17,004), H-sys (140-160, n = 17,493), VH-sys (160-180, n = 4,627), and EH-sys (≥ 180, n = 632). Diastolic blood pressure (DBP) was divided into 6 g

MCM3 Safeguards Neural Progenitor Maintenance and Cortical Development Against Replication-Associated Stress.

Faithful genome duplication during neurogenesis relies on the licensing of surplus replication origins, and hypomorphic variants in MCM3 have been associated with microcephaly and related growth disorders. Using in utero electroporation in embryonic mouse cortex, we show that acute partial depletion of MCM3 disrupts cortical progenitor development. MCM3 knockdown reduced EdU incorporation and PCNA positivity among GFP-positive cells in the VZ, indicating decreased S-phase engagement or impaired cell-cycle progression. It also increased replication-stress-associated signals, including γ-H2AX an

Crosstalk of peripheral cytokine-white matter alteration-insomnia during methadone maintenance treatment.

BACKGROUND: Insomnia is commonly seen in opioid use disorder (OUD) patients receiving methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) and might be related to high heroin relapse risk. This study aims to identify potential mediation pathways among peripheral cytokines, neuroimaging characteristics, and insomnia in MMT patients, and explore diagnostic markers and therapeutic targets for MMT-related insomnia. METHODS: A total of 121 OUD individuals (OUDs) and 109 healthy controls were recruited, including MMT individuals (MMT group, N = 53), short-term abstinent (median: 30 days) heroin users at baseline …

Mesenchymal Stem Cell-derived Exosomes in Multicellular Regulation and Retinal Homeostasis Maintenance.

Retinal degenerative diseases like AMD and DR lead to irreversible vision loss through disrupted homeostasis. Mesenchymal Stem Cell-derived Exosomes (MSC-Exo), as a cell-free therapy, demonstrate significant potential in restoring retinal balance via multi-target regulation. This review elucidates the protective effects of MSC-Exo on key retinal cells, including pigment epithelium, endothelial cells, Müller glia, microglia, and ganglion cells, and specifically examines its role in modulating shared cellular pathways such as PI3K/AKT-Nrf2. It highlights a therapeutic cascade from vascular repai

Catheter-Associated Burkholderia cenocepacia Infective Endocarditis in a Patient Receiving Maintenance Hemodialysis.

Burkholderia cenocepacia, a member of the Burkholderia cepacia complex (BCC), is an opportunistic, intrinsically multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacillus most commonly associated with nosocomial outbreaks and chronic pulmonary infection in patients with cystic fibrosis. Endocarditis caused by B. cenocepacia is extremely rare and has been reported mainly in intravenous drug users or in association with prosthetic valves. We report a fatal case of native mitral valve infective endocarditis caused by B. cenocepacia in a patient with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) receiving maintenance hemodialy…
