The classification, embryology, histopathology, clinical features, and treatment of benign jaw cysts are presented. Emphasis is placed on the differentiation of benign cysts from malignant radiolucent lesions of the jaws. Preservation of adjacent teeth and over vital structures is of paramount importance in the management of jaw cysts.

After a brief account of the history and pathogeny, two cases are described of sub-angiomal bone hypo and hypertrophy. Other cases in the literature are recalled. Finally, a differential diagnosis is given.

Extranodal natural killer/T-cell lymphoma is a distinct subtype of non-Hodgkin lymphoma that originates from natural killer cells or cytotoxic T cells. Its diagnosis is challenging due to the rarity and lack of awareness, especially in cases where osteomyelitis of the jawbone is the initial symptom. This paper reports a case of extranodal natural killer/T-cell lymphoma presenting primarily with oral ulcers. Through analyzing the clinical and pathological characteristics, differential diagnosis, treatment and prognosis, and reasons for misdiagnosis of the disease, this study aims to provide ref

BACKGROUND: Although metastatic involvement of bony sites including cranial bones is common in neuroblastoma (NB), mandibular metastases (MM) are uncommon, and specific outcomes have not been reported upon in the modern therapeutic era.
METHODS: In this retrospective study, medical records on patients with MM from NB were reviewed. Statistical analysis was performed using the Kaplan-Meier method.
RESULTS: Of 29 patients, nine (31%) had MM at diagnosis, whereas in 20 (69%) MM were first detected at NB relapse at a median time of 26 (6-89) months from diagnosis. Median maximal diameter of lesi

The purpose of this case report was to assess whether patient-specific implants (PSI: Xillocs) and soft tissue flaps contribute in reconstructing large mandibular defects. Five patients with a medical situation and history not suitable for free microvascular bone flaps were operated with PSI and evaluated. The mean follow-up time was 12 months. The excellent fit, convenient surgery, and esthetic outcome were seen as the major advantages. The PSI can, in the authors' experience, be considered as a useful alternative provided they are well embedded by viable tissue and attached to vital resectio

Chronic sclerosing sialadenitis is a benign inflammatory condition that most commonly affects the submandibular gland in elderly individuals. It is currently known to belong to the spectrum of IgG4-related systemic diseases, which is reflected by systemic involvement on F-FDG PET/CT images. We presented a case of a 73-year-old man with histologically proven IgG4-related chronic sclerosing sialadenitis, unilateral localized form, on whole-body F-FDG PET/CT images that mimicked submandibular carcinoma with lymph node metastasis.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of our report is to describe an innovative system used for mandibular immobilization during Gamma Knife surgery (GKS) procedures. It is based on an approach originally developed in Marseille in extracranial lesions, close to or involving the mandible, which may imply a certain degree of movement during the therapeutic image acquisitions and/or GKS treatment.
METHODS: The maxillofacial surgeon applied bone titanium self-tapping monocortical screws (4; 2 mm diameter, 10 mm length) between roots of the teeth in the fixed gingiva (upper and lower maxillae) the day before G

Juvenile aggressive fibromatosis is an acquired disease affecting young children. There are two types: superficial and deep; the first is not aggressive whilst the second invades other tissues deeply. This is a case report of the deep variant of juvenile aggressive fibromatosis of the lateral mandible affecting a 24-month-old young female patient. The tumour has been treated surgically by resection of the mandible and reconstruction with a rib-graft. To by-passs resorption of the rib-graft and to re-establish the correct three-dimensional shape of the facial skeleton, osteodistraction of the r

Lesions that can produce divergence of the roots of teeth in the mandible include odontogenic cysts (odontogenic keratocysts, lateral periodontal cysts and radicular cysts), ameloblastomas, odontogenic myxomas, central giant cell granulomas, adenomatoid odontogenic tumors and aneurismal bone cysts, and other tumors. Moreover most benign jaw lesions can do this occasionally. However, when lesions--which show interradicular tear-shaped radiolucencies--are small it is often difficult to interpret them radiographically, because they do not show characteristic radiographic features. We describe a c

The acronym CHARGE refers to a non-random clustering of congenital malformations whose cause remains unknown. To date, the dental features of CHARGE association are not well known. A brief review of the literature and a case in a 10-year old boy with the CHARGE association are presented. The patient had multiple dental anomalies including congenital absence of teeth, ectopic eruption, submergence of primary molars and an odontogenic fibroma associated with an impacted permanent molar.

Osseous free flaps have become the preferred method of mandibular reconstruction after oncologic surgical ablation. To elucidate the long-term effects of free flap mandibular reconstruction on bone mass, maintenance or reduction in bone height over time was used as an indirect measure of preservation or loss in bone mass. Factors potentially influencing bone mass preservation were evaluated; these included site of reconstruction (central, body, ramus), patient age, length of follow-up, adjuvant radiotherapy, and the delayed placement of osseointegrated dental implants. A retrospective analysis

The Proteus syndrome is a rare hamartoneoplastic syndrome that may affect the brain, skull, and extracranial head and neck. We present a case with severe, characteristic findings. Brain abnormalities are not common in Proteus syndrome; when present, hemimegalencephaly and migrational disorders are typically seen, commonly with an associated seizure disorder. Maxillary and mandibular dysmorphism may occur, including unilateral condylar hyperplasia. Subcutaneous fatty, fibrous, lymphangiomatous masses commonly seen in this syndrome may involve the neck and face, leading to disfigurement and pote

Osteoradionecrosis of the mandible poses formidable problems for treatment. In the last 6 years, the fibula osteoseptocutaneous free flap was used in 12 cases to replace mandibles with radionecrotic damage. The presence of a pathologic fracture, exposed necrotic bone, or a persistent fistula not responding to conservative treatment were the indications for such a radical approach. Mandible defects after resection were around 8.0 cm long, and in all cases intraoral mucosa, skin, or both were included with the bone excision. All vascularized fibula osteoseptocutaneous flaps transplanted were suc

Near-haploid solid tumors are very rare. In a storiform-pleomorphic malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) of bone, we found three cell populations: one with a near-haploid, a second with a near-diploid, and a third with a near-tetraploid chromosome number. The near-haploid cells had few structural rearrangements: i(12p) and t(13q21q) in one clone, and these two and an additional t(19;?)(p11;?) in another clone. One structurally normal copy of all chromosomes was also present, except that the only chromosome 13 was involved in the t(13q21q). There were also two near-diploid clones, one without t
