Lateral mandibular ridge: A unique feature of the auriculocondylar syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: Auriculocondylar syndrome (ACS) is a rare craniofacial malformation resulting from pathogenic variants in GNAI3, PLCB4, or EDN1. We evaluated whether a lateral mandibular ridge (LMR)-a bony ridge along the lateral mandibular body-constitutes a specific CT marker of ACS. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ten consecutive individuals (six females and four males with genetically confirmed ACS) underwent high-resolution multidetector CT of the craniofacial skeleton (0.5 mm sections, with multiplanar and 3D bone reconstructions). Two neuroradiologists and one pediatric craniofacial surgeon indepen

Virtual Three-Dimensional Model Analysis in the Assessment of the Maxillary and Mandibular Donor Sites on Cone-Beam Computed Tomography Images.

Using the Mimics software to assess the maxillary and mandibular donor sites on cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images. This cross-sectional study was conducted on 80 CBCT scans. Data in DICOM format were transferred to the Mimics software version 21, and a maxillary and a mandibular mask according to cortical and cancellous bones were virtually created for each patient based on Hounsfield units (HUs). Three-dimensional models were reconstructed, and boundaries of donor sites, including mandibular symphysis, ramus, coronoid process, zygomatic buttress, and maxillary tuberosity, were defin

A Cone-Beam Computed Tomography Study of the Morphological and Morphometric Variations in the Mandibular Lingula and Its Clinical Implications.

Background/Objectives: The mandibular lingula (ML) is a small bony projection on the medial surface of the ramus and serves as the first reference point identified during sagittal split ramus osteotomy (SSRO) or inferior alveolar nerve block (IANB). Anatomical variations in the mandibular ramus have been shown to exist across different populations. Understanding these population-specific differences enhances both clinical safety and diagnostic precision. However, there is a paucity of anthropological data amongst the Mongoloid population, especially in Southeast Asia. Hence, this study aimed t

Moving to 3D: Quantifying Virtual Surgical Planning Accuracy Using Geometric Morphometrics and Cephalometrics in Facial Feminization Surgery.

Facial feminization surgeries (FFS) aim to feminize facial features in transgender women and include frontal sinus setback, rhinoplasty, and genioplasty. FFS may be performed with virtual surgical planning (VSP) to help generate reproducible and predictable results. However, quantification of changes is challenging because these changes often occur in multiple axes and dimensions that are not easily reduced to a single error metric. The objective of this study was to apply cephalometrics and geometric morphometrics analyses to evaluate shape changes in FFS patients undergoing genioplasty and m

Alloplastic implants for skeletal augmentation in Parry-Romberg syndrome: A systematic review.

Parry-Romberg syndrome (PRS) is a rare disorder characterized by progressive hemifacial atrophy affecting soft tissue and, in severe cases, bone. Reconstructive surgery is commonly used to manage PRS-related facial deformities. This systematic review assesses the current literature on alloplastic implants for facial reconstruction in PRS. Following PRISMA guidelines, we conducted a systematic review across MEDLINE, Google Scholar, and Cochrane databases, including English-language studies on PRS managed with alloplastic implants. Eleven studies, including 74 PRS patients (age range 12-45, mean

[Facial allografts and oral rehabilitation].

The main objective of facial allografts is functional. On this account, oral rehabilitation is pivotal. Two types of cases are possible. Firstly, the indication of facial allograft concerns only the soft tissues. If so, dental care is similar to the one of patients with an organ transplant. Dental implants are a priori contraindicated. A possible indication has to be discussed with the multidisciplinary team. Secondly, the indication is the one of a mandibular and/or maxillary reconstruction. The objective will be a total reconstruction. It could be performed immediately with the allotransplan

Pigmented villonodular synovitis of the temporomandibular joint - computed tomography and magnetic resonance findings: a case report.

Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) is a benign but locally aggressive and destructive disease originating in the synovial membranes. It is a proliferative disorder of unknown etiology. Involvement of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is very rare. Computed tomography clearly reveals areas of lytic bone erosion and sclerosis, and also clearly defines the extent of the tumor which is the focal areas of hyperdensity within the soft-tissue mass. Magnetic resonance images invariably show profound hypointensity on both T1- and T2-weighted sequences due to hemosiderin pigmentation. Additionally,

Computer guided surgery for implant placement and dental rehabilitation in a patient undergoing sub-total mandibulectomy and microvascular free flap reconstruction.

A 58-year-old patient presented with an extensive, destructive, recurrent pleomorphic adenoma occupying the mandibular body and the soft tissues of the mouth and neck. Resection of the mandible from right ramus to left condylar process, and implant rehabilitation in both jaws with fixed bridgework was planned. Comprehensive presurgical prosthetic work up was carried out to record the existing dental relationship and guide all stages of the reconstruction. The jaw was first grafted with a segmented, fibular microvascular free-flap, which was fixed in place with a fixation plate prebent on a Rap
